One Year Out: Support, Motivation, and Tough Love
Healthy_life replied to hap314ness's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Give yourself credit for all the weight lost. Amazing work! Stalls and gains can mess with your head. I had a 16 pound gain and worked it back down. I understand the fear of gain and losing control. No reason to beat yourself down. You have a small gain and you are ready to take control again. you said " I will fall into my old pattern of guilt, depriving myself, guilt, treating myself, guilt, eating all day, guilt, guilt, guilt. But here I am, three pounds above my lowest post op weight, guilty" Behavior change may be working on how you are talking to yourself. Change the negative statements you tell yourself about your weight. Be your biggest cheerleader. A therapist may be a good option to overcome these repeated patterns. Wishing you the best, Jenn -
I miss food so much so so much 😭😭😭

Once you have surgery there is no going back. This is the new life we chose. Old coping skills are something to work on. Therapy is a good option. I hope you can work out this feeling and move forward. Surgery is life changing. The things you overcome in therapy can be a gift out of this process. We are all a work in progress. -

Can anyone recommend how to start weight training?
Healthy_life replied to Jeff M.'s topic in Fitness & Exercise
@Kat410 I love how you put this " if I had just lost the weight and stayed mushy, squishy and weak I really don't think I would have been as satisfied with the new life I have" -
Lost too much weight
Healthy_life replied to Hoggles69's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are a healthy BMI of 19 at 5'4" 52Kg 114 pounds. A BMI of 18 is underweight. Do what you have to do to be healthy. Are you working with a dietician to get your weight to where you want it to be? -
Foot 911: What kind of shoes and socks do you wear?
Healthy_life replied to %^&'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Pain and injury free walking/running. It's worth it to invest in your shoes. I need a good arch and stability. I started with asics. I invested in Brooks and Hoka one one. Some videos on fitting shoes. -
Do you have a Treat, what is it, and how often.

My two cents. People comment on posts out of concern. I think it's important to see all sides and opinions. Choose what is useful and ignore anything that may offend you. The bariatricpal community has seen it all. You will see people posting I can eat whatever I want and lose weight. I ate XYZ and I am gaining what do I do now. People asking permission to eat XYZ, Others admit they have gone off plan and are looking to get back on track. I heard from a friend of a friend that you can eat a potato chip diet...--Ugh Posters will give you perspective and things to think about. Not all of us will come across as warm and fuzzy. -
What is crazy cardio? I don't think anyone is running marathons in the first few months after surgery.

Great Article/Blog Post: Deadly Mistakes With WLS Than Can Ruin Your Life
Healthy_life replied to FluffyChix's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Love this! So true... Behavior changes and taking responsibility are key to your success. Thanks for the post. -
@Kay07 You should feel good about yourself. Eating healthy, 5K and rocking high heels. (1) So yeah I am working on that. Did any of you struggle with reevaluating your relationship with yourself? Do you view yourself as a project in the works? This transformation is more than physical. I used my time at the gym or walking to process the mental side of WLS. I had to let go of all the negative messages from others and myself about my weight. I had to process how differently people are simply because of weight loss. I found that I was an adrenaline junkie love a challenge. I am also the same core person with the same values. Interesting that many of us share the experience of not knowing how to take compliments. I was used to being invisible to the opposite sex. It's a bit unnerving when suddenly they are showing attraction. It takes time to get used to. Its ok to feel awkward my compliment scale appropriate - Say thank you and move on. hilarious - They'll make great NSV. Please share them inappropriate /creepy - Depending on the situation I confront them. Know that it's ok to feel good about the way you look and feel. Have fun and experiment with clothing you want to wear. Find your own style. Life is short. Rock your bad@ss self. We are all a work in progress. Never stop. Keep growing and changing in life. (2) For those of you who hit goal or are maintaining, did you decide that because you felt like you hit it, or because you hit the number you set? How long did it take you to feel comfortable in your new skin? I pulled my goal weight of 140 out of thin air. I worked my program to get to reach it and beyond. Nothing magic, it was the work put in. First year after goal. I hid from mirrors and cameras for years. I had to work on seeing myself smaller. I would still move around people as if I was larger and didnt want my hip to bump into them.*laughing* Just a bunch of small things like that. After the first year my mind caught up with the weight loss.

Healthy_life replied to Jeff M.'s topic in Fitness & Exercise
@BigViffer can give you some good information and a guy's perspective. One site to do some research on is bodybuilding.com Lots of information - The site has training for beginners on up. Also an exercise database. You select the muscle you want to work. It will pull many different lifts and exercises. It also gives a video on how to use the equipment and proper form. https://www.bodybuilding.com/workout-plans/level/beginner https://www.bodybuilding.com/workout-plans/ https://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises/ -

Regrets???

I agree with @GreenTealael The sleeve was the right choice for me. Less invasive, My intestines are not rerouted. Type one diabetic I can eat small amount of sugar without dumping syndrome. Talk with your team. Find what's right for you. -
How long did it take to hit your goal and when did your loss slow down?

Struggling with post op diet and calorie restriction.
Healthy_life replied to BelleOfBatonRouge's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As always, great advice from @GreenTealael @FluffyChix To put your mind at ease, you can have your Dr check to see if you have an ulcer or acid reflux. Things will get better as you progress to real food. You are taking action to changing your behaviors. This is the mental battle with weight loss. One of the best gifts out of surgery is the things you overcome. Give us and update on how things progress after seeing your nutritionist and therapist. Wishing the best for you, Jenn -

I would never say Expect to lose X amount of weight in X amount of time to anyone. Body physiology, medical issues medications can be a factor in rate of weight loss. We are all different and have our own experience with this process. -

Congrats on three weeks out! Weight loss is at its best in the first months. It will slow down as you progress. Take advantage of your first year. We all lose at different rates. It's not a race and comparing stats with others will make you crazy. I got to gaol in six months. Nothing magic. I followed my plan. Walked, elliptical and a bit of weight training. Honeymoon phase: My answer depends on your definition of honeymoon phase. I think my first stall made me realize this is work The reality that any of us can gain weight back The high from seeing the scale move stops and maintaining begins Four years out - I am still grateful and excited about this 2nd chance in life. Weight Loss, getting my health back, having adventures in life........ It's still a honeymoon to me.😉 -
Speed and pleasure ...Love it *☺️ I use my home scale. It gives me weight, body fat, bone density and water weight. I am not a professional athlete. (Well, in my mind I am 🤣) I don't feel the need for a dexascan. But, if you are looking for accuracy spend the money. What are your fitness goals? Are you building muscle ?
