Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion

Check the ingredients, it's not always all cauliflower crust. Many of them have other starchy flour substitutes. -
@bettie.blue - How are you doing?

Sucking it in
MargoCL replied to chamomilelavender's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried an abdominal waist trainer? I've started using that to help "shape" me and it seems to be helping my belly bulge as well. otherwise, I will sometimes (often) buy 1 or 2 size smaller cotton cami's - I think the tighter / smaller sizes do very much the same as spanx and a lot less expensive. -
My experience so far with sleeve (6 weeks in)
MargoCL replied to jultrim18's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@jultrim18 - I'm just a couple of days shy of you, sleeved 8/20. I understand what you're feeling and my weightloss is very similar to yours. I'll tell you this, I have "cheated" and tried a bite of the so called, no no's and have determined that small single bite is enough. I no longer crave those items as I used to. I'd much rather each a bunch of grapes (which these days equates to about 5-8 at most) than a bowl of pasta. I did try pizza (1/2 slice) and it was not as good as it once was. I don't want that carby bloatedness that follows. As for things you can eat... the options are endless for you now. Everything we eat for the first time is trial and error. Our new pouches will either say, "yeah, this isn't bad" or 'hell no, keep it away' - I love ground turkey and I recently found out that homemade chili with ground turkey my pouch will accept, but a turkey burger... not a chance. I can eat a regular burger no problem. I struggle nearly daily with just my water consumption because I never know how my belly will react "today" to it. Some days it wants ICE COLD, others just cold and then others it wants room temperature. It will take months for us to discover all the wonderful things our belly wants or doesn't want. But isn't that the fun part of this? Learning to eat healthy and reaping the weight loss rewards with it? -
The port with pain is where your stomach came out. It will take a good week to two for it to no longer be sore. Try crushing your pills in the first couple of weeks and take with applesauce. It worked great for me. Just remember, walking is good... even when you don't want to, just do it. It will help you heal faster. Good luck, you've got this

Clear liquids.....I hate broth
MargoCL replied to LynnV1964's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't eat canned soups. There is something in the ingredients that makes me vomit immediately after. It doesn't matter if it's a tsp., Tbsp or the whole can. I had to stop eating canned soups about 10 years ago. So I became a master soup maker so I could enjoy it at home. I can't even use the prepackaged broths. -
Weight loss surgery advice needed

My original PCP signed off on the paperwork, but both of my PCPs actually approved based on my medical history and failure to consistently lose weight. -
Pain and gas upon drinking
MargoCL replied to MeredithGrace's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What you're experiencing is normal. Your body is reacting to the temperature of the liquid. It will take trial and error multiple times. Gas is also normal, walk, walk and keep walking. -
Hand my Sleeve on Sept. 5, happy and miserable!
MargoCL replied to Futuresleevie18's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As far as your liquids go, you may have to experiment with temperatures. My new pouch changes its mind almost weekly ss to how hot or cold it wants something. Immediately post surgery it was room temp, then it wanted ice cold, back to room temp... there's a pattern here and my best advice is change it up, your body knows best. Congratulations on a successful recovery, keep up the good work -
Clear liquids.....I hate broth
MargoCL replied to LynnV1964's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did the same thing for variety. When I wasn't cooking soups at home, I shopped for pre made -
Not sure if you tried them, but I bought a 4-pack last week and tried the pumpkin spice with my decaf this week.... it's definitely not sweet, but really enjoyed the the taste.

Anyone lose motivation leading up to surgery?
MargoCL replied to Briswife15's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost more weight during preop and almost debated on going without the surgery. But honestly, going through with the surgery was the best decision of my life. I am now almost 6 weeks (2 days shy) post op and can begin exploring all regular foods. The positive is definitely that I don't crave or desire junk food. I'm learning every day to trust my body when it says it's full as not to overeat. And despite the weight loss stalls (and they will happen), I'm still very happy with my progress. I don't want to always feel tired, I am enjoying watching my body become shapely vs just a very large blob. While it feels like the motivation is going, remember your journey is just beginning and will get very exciting quickly. -
I don't count it towards my fluids, just my protein. I judge my hydration on the color of my urine.

Meetups do have volunteer groups [emoji6] [emoji2] I met a guy here in NC, who was from my hometown in NY and was best friends with my neighbors when I was 5 years old. We always had a good time reminiscing about those days. Haha.

Pre-Op - Full vs Clear liquids...
MargoCL replied to sleevemebaby7781's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My plan is very similar to what I posted, but since their publishing, even their plan had been modified. I was allowed Gatorade zero, powerade zero and not mentioned, I've been a fan of sqwinchers zero. It's always important to follow your plan and follow up with your team. -

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
MargoCL replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had salad yesterday and hate to disappoint, I can tell you I had probably (in eye ball measurement) 2 Tbsp, which took about 6-8 forkfuls for me to consume. I was stuffed. -
Aetna better health of Pennsylvania
MargoCL replied to shany1567's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not in PA, but I can tell you that it took almost a solid 30-days for the final approval to come from the insurance company and we do use Aetna. When I called the Dr's office 2 - 3 weeks in, they said Aetna takes 30-days. Once they approved, I had my surgery scheduled within 2 weeks. -
Sorry for the rough start, I swear it gets better and the surgery day will be an after thought. Just remember to stay on course with meeting your protein / fluid goals. and don't forget to walk, walk, walk.

What are your favorite WLS friendly grab and go foods
MargoCL replied to Rosie T's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I recently tried RawRev Glo - Creamy Peanut butter and sea salt Protein / Fiber Bars (15g protein / 14g Fiber, 2g Sugar, 3 Net Carbs) - It's super filling and compact, easy to keep in bags, etc. Mozzarella Cheese sticks - 60cal - 7gr protein Tender Beef Jerky in 0.625 oz bags, again small and compact easy to keep in bags single serve Cottage cheese - I've become a huge fan of cottage cheese since WLS Matt Z mentioned Kay's protein snacks, they are pretty awesome and easy to use for 2 snacks if needed. I also make hard boiled eggs to travel with to work each week, I have an egg maker which takes roughly 12min total, no hassle, perfect cooking every time and then easy to travel with. -
I just saw my Surgeon's PA and she only stated that right now I should be focused on my protein and water intake. I told her I was concerned about my carbs (30-40 Net) per day and she asked me where they were coming from. When I responded with Cottage Cheese, Beans, Nuts, etc... she asked if pasta, potatoes (white and sweet), rice were in that mix and I responded with no. I'm only eating non-starchy foods. She stated that's all that mattered. Stay away from starches and focus on Protein and water. Your goal is to work up to 90g of Protein per day and as @Matt Z said get upwards of 128 oz of water a day. In this early stage, stay focused on the 60g protein and more than 64oz of water. You will work up to increasing your portion sizes as your belly lets you. Listen to it. Chances are (and from what it looks like) you are still at a 1/4 cup per serving.
