  1. I had my pre-op diet a couple days ago and I'm allowed 2 protein shakes and 2 meals (60% lean protein, 40% non-starchy veg). What's your pre-op diet? This is my list for post-op weeks 1-2: Eggs FF refried beans Apple sauce (with unflavored protein powder) Chili (I'm going to mash the beans up so that it's more of a pureed consistency) Greek yogurt Ricotta Bake Pudding (with protein powder) Weeks 3-4 Sliced turkey Tilapia Soup Buffalo chicken dip That's what I have so far!
  2. Me too! I'm so excited! Right now I'm making my post-op grocery list for weeks 1-4.
  3. Congrats!! My surgery is the day after yours There are a couple of boards where January sleevers have been posting and I believe that there are at least a couple of others who have surgery on January 7.

    Protein shakes...

Unury > Premier. The type of protein in Unjury is much higher quality. Premier is a concentrate, whereas Unjury is whey protein isolate. An isolate is a more complete type of protein and is better absorbed.
  5. Hi all! My surgery is next month and my pre-op appointment is tomorrow. I've gained a few pounds since my last weigh-in a couple months ago. Did any of you gain weight after approval? If so, did it matter? My pre-op appointment is tomorrow, so I'll find out then but I wanted to check in with everyone here to see if anyone else experienced this.

    Weight Gain After Approval

That's kind of how my appointment went today! They mentioned it briefly, but then moved on to talk about the pre-op diet. Looks like I was worried over nothing

    Trying not to

When you start lifting weights, or doing any type of resistance training, your muscles get micro-tears which causes fluid in your muscles. For me, it always takes a while before the water weight would go down—usually a week or two—and then all of a sudden I'd lose a lot overnight.

    Weight Gain After Approval

Thanks for sharing! I'm hoping that since I still have to do the pre-op diet that it won't be a big deal. I was on track yesterday and am down 2 of the pounds I gained over the last week, so we'll se how today goes
  9. Insurance and your surgeon's office will dictate a lot of your experience. In my case, I was required to do a 6 month weight loss program that included visits with an exercise physiologist and nutritionist. I also had to lose 5% of my starting weight in this time. Additional requirements included a psych eval, 3 year weight history, and letter of medical necessity from my PCP. My insurance also requires a sleep study for those with sleep apnea. After those 6 months, my file was submitted to insurance for approval. Approval only took a day (this is not typical—typical approval time is 2 weeks, but insurance providers have up to a month to approve/deny). The time between my approval and surgery is 7.5 weeks. My surgery is next month, so I can't speak to recovery but I will be off work for 2 weeks and will probably be working from home from home during the second week. I definitely understand your apprehension. I think that after your consultation you'll have more concrete answers, so hopefully that will help ease your worries.

    Psych Evaluation Tomorrow!

It's normal to have second thoughts. Remind yourself of why you wanted WLS in the first place. Has anything changed that would make you think that you shouldn't do it? I had second thoughts for a millisecond, but then remembered that even if I did lose the weight, that I probably wouldn't be able to keep it off. WLS will make it a lot more likely that I'll be able to maintain my weight loss, which is why I'm going through with it. As far as the psych eval, I was told that mine would be an hour and a half. I met with a psychologist and completed several written assessments. The whole process was under an hour.

    January surgeries?!

Hahaha, agree! I've also done this and could get through breakfast fine, lunch wouldn't be too bad, but dinner is soooo hard.

    Weight Gain After Approval

Yeah, I definitely get what you mean I'm back on track with my eating today, but my pre-op appointment is tomorrow so the few pounds that I've gained over the past week (even though I'm sure much of it is water weight) will show up on the scale.

    Weight Gain After Approval

Thanks for your response My surgery isn't until next month, so I know that after the pre-op diet I'll definitely be below what I was at my final weight-in. I was maintaining, but I've had a rough few days (death in the family), so I've gotten a little off track.

How did your family and friends react?

I've only told my immediate family, boyfriend, and one friend (who had WLS earlier this year). I don't have plans to let anyone else know. The first 6 months after surgery are the months during which there is the most potential to lose weight and that's what I want to focus on. I don't want anyone who may not be supportive to ruin that.

    January 2019

My pre-op is the 19th! And I just checked the calendar and realized that I'll also be starting that pre-op diet on Christmas...this will be an interesting Christmas dinner 😂

    Feeling faint(light headed) sometimes...

Low blood pressure can cause this. If you have low blood pressure you may also feel faint during a hot shower (blood pressure goes down when you shower).
  19. I'm looking forward to being able to completely wrap a towel around myself!
  20. Exactly. Exercise helps you lose the right type of weight—fat, instead of muscle. It also helps you build muscle. This isn't something you can do with WLS or eating the "right" foods. There are plenty of people out their who are at a "healthy" weight, but who are actually unhealthy because they don't do any physical activity. Exercise aids in weight loss, but that's definitely not its main purpose.

    January surgeries?!

Hi everyone! My last pre-op appointment is next week! During my last appointment we go over my pre-op diet and the nurse checks to make sure that I've bought the approved protein powder and vitamins.

Going to Surgery on Wednesday... NERVOUS

It will work if you put in the work 🙂 Sending both of you good vibes on your surgery day!

What can I safely take for low back pain?

This was going to be my suggestion, too. I'm pre-op, but typically don't take NSAIDS for low back pain anyway because I don't feel like it does anything. A heating pad eases some of the pain. If I don't have a heating pad with me, sometimes I'll use Icy Hot (the roller ball or the pads), but I don't think it works as well as the heating pad.

    January surgeries?!

Me too! I'm officially under the 30 day mark! My friends and family keep saying that it seems like time has passed by quickly since I decided to have surgery, but I feel like this last month is going to drag! I still have a lot of things I need to do before surgery (take 2968934892 before pics, buy post-op food, etc.), so hopefully that will give me something to do in the meantime.
  25. This happened to me, too. The coordinator was supposed to submit my file after my last weigh in and didn't. Because of this, my surgery was pushed to January instead of December. It's very frustrating that people can't be trusted to do what they say they'll do when they say they'll do it. As much as I had to pester her to get it done, I should be compensated for the supervision I provided 😂
