Bandster with Celiac Disease
delouhigh replied to Micia il MINIac's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was banded in November 2006 and was just diagnosed with Celiac Sprue in that last week....in fact, my surgeon just called me this morning with the final diagnosis. I haven't had a dietary consultation yet as she is at meetings so I am in a holding position for now. How do you deal with the restrictions in diet? The dietitican and I are both shocked by the diagnosis but apparently my surgeon suspected it even though he didn't tell me. I have had problems with vomiting (not PBing) almost the entire time since being Banded. I had 2 barium swallow studies done that showed nothing. I had an endoscopy done 2 1/2 weeks ago which the doctor took a biopsy and then did a Celiac Panel, based on those results. I love breads, so this is going to be a tough thing for me to follow...breads never gave me a problem with the Band, so I continued to eat it. Do you have any suggestions to get me started on the new diet regimen? Thanks, DEB -
would like to hear where you are getting your lap bands done

It has not been a good experience for me. I haven't had much success with weight loss, and I have had just about any and all negative effects that there is to be had. I have had 2 Barium Swallow Studies done, and the surgeon still doesn't know why I have had so much trouble with vomiting (not PBing....full out vomiting) that often happens several times a day. He told me if no changes within the next 2 months he will have to do a scope into my stomach to see if there is band erosion going on...since none of the other tests show anything. I regret my decision to have the surgery because it has been such a negative experience. BTW, I had mine done is Mitchell, SD....my doctor is great, but my all-around experience has been awful. DEB -
To Hawaiian Chick... My email didn't go through, so will just post to you here. My surgeon is in Mitchell, which is about 60 miles form Sioux Falls. His name is Dr. Andrew Reynolds and his collegue is Dr. Michael Haley. They are in a Bariatric Clinic together. In Sioux Falls, I know there is a Dr. Thaemert and a Dr. Strand, but I really know nothing about them as surgeons.

Hi ALL. I don't come here very often as I go to another South Dakota Banders forum. Sounds like most of you have had a good experience with your Banding. Not so much me. I vomit lots.....the longest stretch I have had without has been 3 days. Weight loss has been very slow. BTW, my surgery was in November 2006 and I have lost roughly 40 lbs, yeah I know it is very disappointing. I'm alwya sinterested to find out how people have made it a positive experience since I have had so many problems myself DEB...Plankinton
