So, what impact did the AMA decision have on you in your world? -

Thanks, Missouri-Lee. I'm glad you could access it this time. As a retired librarian, I try to put my OCD "features" to constructive use in research. I DO LOVE RESEARCH. :-) -
Weight bias and people-first language

The website where I found the article is www.weightymatters.ca and you can then get to the whole article. Then there is a partial page of research papers written by Sarah Nutter, who responded to my letter written to the three authors of the study. Well, everything is in png, so hope it works for you! -
Weight bias and people-first language

Ha, I'm not THAT good! No, I wrote to the three Canadian researchers who were looking at how people dealing with obesity feel now that obesity is classified as a disease, and seeing if it has impact on weight-related bias toward those who are overweight. I will try again to see if I can send it again in a different format. Before reading that article I was not aware of the debate and controversy on the AMA decision. I see I put it in a Pages doc - will try for Word or pdf. -
LoriNumbers - I opted for the same flexibility. 5 days post-op, I am feeling HUNGER, craving something with crunch and savory. Protein shakes and jello are not providing satiety, although the chicken broth helps somewhat. Whey protein does not taste good in chicken broth to me for some reason. Am having better luck with collagen protein, adding the tryptophan separately to create a complete protein. I am blindsided by this hunger - did not expect any hunger at all for a long time. Any of this ring true for you?

Ditto. 3 days post-op and I feel weak, dizzy, tired. I just take a nap. Body's gotta do its thing. I try to up the protein g tally each day also - body needs the protein to heal.

Anita - I imagine most of us have allegiance to favorite foods prepared in certain ways. Most of the recipes I see for the Nutribullet and on Pinterest don't appeal to me. i have adopted two strategies: 1) I get creative to see how I can modify my favs so they will be healthy, or at least have a ton more protein; 2) if I can't modify it to my liking, I agree to give it up for the 10 weeks until I can begin regular food textures, etc. It really depends on your long term goal. My NUT says "There is no cheating - only choices." I don't want ANY food having control over me, and already I find things I used to favor just have no more appeal to me. Perhaps you can discuss this with your NUT and counselor, and in your support groups. I know a few who have an occasional beer 1 yr after surgery, but again, it is a choice only you can make for yourself.

Missouri-Lee - I felt compelled to write to the three women who authored the paper. I did not expect a reply but wanted to convey the power of the AMA decision in my life. If you can't access the attachment let me know. Obesity as a Disease.pages -

Here's an interesting article... http://www.weightymatters.ca/2018/07/guest-post-what-happens-to-weight-bias.html -
Sounds like a good reason to send that sort of thing Registered Mail !

Are you ready, Nisha? Just last minute kitchen cleaning here, filling the pet bowls, double check the go bag... I am surprised that I am still feeling excitement. The nerves will kick in Monday for sure, I feel it coming. I want Monday to be a day to get centered, relax, meditate. It's been 198 days getting to this moment, and I want to acknowledge all the roller coaster of emotions and research and appts I've "endured" to get on the gurney to OR - ha! Let's all take a deep breath and think positive, good thoughts. Maybe some favorite music to calm things down.

Thanks for sharing that. Others may want to look into it, too!

A con for me with FitBit is sweaty skin under the band with exercise. I considered the stainless mesh band with magnetic strap, but they don't stay in place if you jog, etc so you don't get a reading. Another thing I ran into -- if you want to count steps with your shopping cart, you can't steer with both hands. The FitBit arm needs to swing free to count the steps unless you wear it on your ankle, which IS an option.

And what are your fears, Emkaybee?
-
Really, only you can make that decision. Do you see yourself using it long term as an aid to tracking exercise, or will it be a novelty item you grow tired of? I got a Charge2 in Feb and started just using it to track sleep quality. Then added steps to it, and I like it so will use it after surgery, too for more of the features. I had to get used to wearing it at night. Thought I'd have to remove it for doing dishes, but no. I keep it clean with mild soap and Q-tips. Must charge every 5 days for about 2 hrs. I like stats, so counting carbs, proteins and the like is not a chore for me. You must assess your needs. Maybe others will comment on pros and cons.

I doubt you're the only one, Bubula. I have the utmost respect and regard for the anesthesiologist, keeping you asleep just enough and focusing on you the whole time - your vitals, your face, your extremities. Can you describe your fears about it?

Both of you are right, J San and Simpson. What will be will be, and fretting doesn't help or change anything. Learning to relax is the most helpful for our systems. Some Xanax would also be nice. :-)

Good luck Stacy, and thanks for the heads up, Yuneli!

Jello. I'm posting 3 pix. The Unjury recipe comes from my surgery booklet - they recommend Unjury Protein products. The other recipe is from wellnessmama.com. I'm making jello using these Crystal Light Pure and True Lemon products made with stevia. There is a product, Zing, which is 1/2 sugar and 1/2 dextrose (another 0 cal but highly processed), but I make my own version of Zing: 2 T Sweet Leaf Stevia + 1 cup cane sugar. 1/2 t = 1 T sweetness for 8 calories and avoids much of the refining chemicals and processes. For me, it also eliminates any bitter overtones in the stevia. I've also been trying flavorings from Lorannoils.com -- like root beer, pineapple, caramel, butterscotch ... love adding coffee flavor to my protein shakes. Fun site to browze.

I'm amazed you can have yogurt so soon. I will be on liquids for 4 weeks before getting yogurt, applesauce, mushy stuff. All these plans vary so widely!

That sounds normal, you being in the medical field. I overthink things, too, and plan obsessively. My surgeon required such a thorough pre-op process of clearances to get "vetted" that I feel very confident about the surgery and aftermath. The only thing I didn't have to go through was a Senate Confirmation Hearing! If you have confidence in your surgeon and hospital, you just have to surrender to faith. A fav quote: "Faith sees best in the dark." (by Kierkegaard). Let's do this, Liz. We've waited a long time for this and our moment is nigh. Tuesday for me, Wednesday for you. Got your go bag packed?
-
How're doing, Maggie? Are you home? Any issues? Hope all will be smooth sailing!

Me, too, Iviz! I cannot eat processed foods or sweeteners other than stevia and moderate amounts of sucralose, so I do a LOT of prep work and experimenting in kitchen labortory. Have been making/freezing chicken broth in the 2, 3, and 4 oz deli containers, and trying homemade jello. I have a double-wall stainless 16-18 oz thermos with flip straw, a Nutribullet and a mini food processor. Love that Nutribullet for protein shakes. And I've used a food scale for years. I'm told cold liquids may not be tolerated as well as room temp, initially. I have four 16 oz water bottles by Design for Living to fill each day to track my water intake goals. One gal used 1 oz plastic pill cups in hosp - fill 4 of them, and that's the goal for 15 min. If we have nausea/vomiting it could set us back from our daily intake goals. I packed my go bag last week, will double check it tonight. I am excited and looking forward to this surgery, but I will be a bit nervous the night before. Can't help it. Good luck to you!
-
Oh, Passport, I am so glad to know things are going better for you. I have tucked some Gas-X in my go bag for my surgery next Tuesday 7/17. Hoping things will be smooth sailing for you going forward.

Good plan! You caused me to recall that, when I could normally bend over with ease I would open the front door and put my hand inside near the floor, putting me more at her level, and that reduced her jumping up on me. Or, I'd put my hand in, let her lick it, then close the door and re-enter. Reduced jumping! This was many years ago and I'd forgotten a lot of her behaviors. I am mostly a cat person -- once had 5 at one time, not by design. Two is best for me -- Bonkers and Chancy.
