  1. I agree, had the same issue. I was surprised at how much I could drink. But food is a very different story. And it is an adjustment. But after a couple of months you will settle into a groove.
  2. Hi BubblesCT can you give us an update? I too was sleeved on June 28th but I was at Hospital Angels with Dr Corvala. Same experience as you. The hospital was more like staying at a four star hotel. Felt very safe their. Had a huge staff of 3 different doctors and tons of nurses. Down 43 pounds so far losing about 2 pounds per week now. Tell us how things are going with you. Most of all tell me about your peloton. I want one so badly.
  3. you definitely dont get the level of support from the dr that you would get if you had the surgery in the US. But Between this forum, other web resources and your México dr you should get what you need. My doctor here was also supportive. I did not even schedule an appt with her until 6 weeks post op. I didn’t need one. I was just very careful to make sure I bought the best vitamins, electrolyte replacement and protein drinks I could find. And then I just followed the instructions given by me México doctor. I had no complications at all. The Mexico choice was right for me.
  4. I think it’s fine. They have fiber and packed with vitamins. They have some carbs but it you are under 50 g ig carbs a day anyway I think sweet potatoes are a good choice a couple times a week.

any sleevers in their late 50's

I am 55 and 7 weeks post op. I have lost 39 pounds. Weight came off crazy fast the first two weeks. Since then it really varies. One week I only lost 1.5 pounds. But then others it will be 4 pounds. I have had zero problems. Recovered quickly and went to work 1.5 weeks after surgery. I have been able to tolerate any food including spicy food. The first week was tough, i’m Not going to lie. Until you can eat full food it is pretty tough too. But it’s only 4 or 5 weeks. That is a short time. Now I am still amazed at how little I can eat. There were Times I wanted to just tear into my food but you just can’t eat much. It can be disappointing when it happens. But that has hanged over the last couple of weeks. Now I am happy I can’t eat much. It keeps me motivated because I know I will lose weight. I have learned to enjoy the few bites of food I can eat. I would do it again!

    Caffeine

I kind of lost my love for coffee after surgery. So I pretty much skip it except when I occasionally need the caffeine.

    Calorie intake

Almost 8 weeks post op and around 850 calories. About 45% protein, 35% fat and 20% from carbs. I can generally stay within carbs but I usually go over by 4 or 5 grams of fat because of eggs. I can’t live without them.

BMI too low for insurance to cover surgery

My insurance company would only pay if BMI was UNDER 37. My BMI was 47 and I had 3 co-morbidities but they still would not pay. Makes no sense at all. My only thought was that it wanted to keep premiums down for our plan. Do not exclude Mexico from your research and do noT listen to people who poo poo it unless they can back it up with facts (which they cannot). I have a friend who is a PhD/MD and agrees that For this particular surgery Mexico is better than than the US in terms of outcomes. You just have to research the doctors and talk to a lot of people. I had a great experience in Mexico. My dr even fixed my hiatal hernia that I didn’t even know I had. I have had zero complicAtions and am at 7 weeks out. The hospital was like staying in a 4 star hotel and was in a very safe and upscale area of Tijuana. Total bill was $8700 not including flight. Do yourself a favor and at least check it out.
  9. I never had any issues with restriction on liquids. But once food was introduced that changed. I am 7 weeks post op and still have a few issues if I am not mindful of bite sizes and eating slower.

    Vitamins

I was allowed to take pills after completion of 4 weeks. I had no problems and take 4 pills, 1 vitamin and 1 fish oil. No problems.

Does anyong use LiquaCel or FiberCel?

I don’t. But I have been wondering if I should. I am getting enough protein and keeping carbs down. But at the expense of getting enough fiber and that worries me a little. I would be curious what others are doing in terms of fiber.
  12. Restriction is coming, I promise. Dense proteins like chicken and pork Cause it for me. It is an adjustment eating small bites and chewing, chewing , chewing. But I am getting better.

    Not Protein Driven

I don’t do shakes. Every morning I have a protein juice drink. I got it from Amazon and it’s called New York bariatric. I got the sample pack which has 7 flavors. I add to it Dr Axe collagen protein. I am getting 25 g of protein I that drink. It’s just Different than a creamy shake. I prefer juice in the morning so this works well for me and it’s fewer calories than a shake.
  14. Riding in a car is so so so much more risky. But people don’t give it two thoughts when they step in their car and turn the key and go. Just keep the risks of this surgery in perspective. They are low. Think of your health and what the risks are if you don’t have surgery. Even if you are young and don’t have diabetes, high blood pressure, etc yet, you will get oneormorw of them eventually. About 5 years ago I went for a routine check up and my Dr had me drive straight to the hospital. My bp was 110 / 205. I didn’t even feel bad, yet I could have stoked out that day. Being obese is dangerous stuff. Do this for you, look at the positives not the negatives. I have no regrets. The care I had in MX was excellent.

    Anyone try bananas? When?

I tried 1/2 Banana in week 3 in a smoothie and had no problems. But I have had zero problems with any food (but knocking on wood as I say that).

    Dry skin

I have always had very dry skin and hair. I do Dr Axe collagen protein which has helped some. The only body lotion I have found that quenches my skins thirst is Aveeno skin relief moisture repair cream. It works for me really well.

    Tomato soup with goat cheese

Take any tomato soup (I like Trader Joe’s). I heat 1 c in microwave but stir in some goat cheese. It is soooo good!
  18. I have a desk job and only took 1.5 weeks. It was no problem and I am 55 years old.
  19. I was curious if anyone has gone through the 4 Phases of your post op diet quicker than 1 phase per week? I am in Phase 2 until Thursday but so far nothing has bothered me. I have always had a pretty heart stomach. I would like to start trying some Phase 3 foods a little early and see how it goes. Any one want to share their experience?

    Wife not Supportive

You have 4 co-morbitities. That is not good and definitely puts you at a higher risk for premature death. Would she rather that be the case? My husband was not thrilled but I put it to him just that way. I am the bread winner and my death would pose serious financial issues for my family. I can’t get any more life insurance because of the same co-morbities you have. Surgery is a good choice for you. She will come around.

Scheduled for sleeve July 10th may back out

I had my surgery in Mexico on 6/29. I am 55 year old, have high blood pressure, diabetes, and sleep apnea. I weighed 256 on the day of surgery and that is on a 5’3” frame. These are the reasons I had the surgery. My thought was that if I didn’t have the surgery I wouldn’t make it to age65. That prospect scared me a lot. There are no guarantees whether you have the surgery or not. When I was wheeled into surgery I was at complete peace with it and not at all nervous because I knew this was my best hope for a long life. It was a tough surgery and it took me a good 4 days to feel decent. But now at 10 days out I feel pretty darn well aside from not having too much energy because I am still in phase 2 full liquid only. I am looking forward to Thursday hen I get to try soft foods. So far I have had zero complications. Hope this helps. Please let us know your decision.

    Anyone expedite the phases

dfox and SydneySleever, thank you for your input!

    Anyone expedite the phases

There seems to be a difference of opinion between some doctors. I have heard some people come out of the hospital already In phase 2. Some sources I found say it’s up to the dr based on the patient’s tolerance how quickly they move through the phases. I planned on checking with my dr but wanted to see from the forum how common it was to go shorter than 1 week between phases before I checked with Dr.
