The importance of taking Calcium supplements

I had the Gastric bypass and I am out 7 years from surgery. I always took my multivitamin supplement and later found out how important it was to get in my iron supplement as I had a hard time getting it back in the normal range. I always took a calcium supplement as well but was only taking in approximately 500 to 1000 on average. However, I learned how difficult it was getting my iron levels in the normal range and was having to take additional iron supplements and it took approximately 1 1/2 years to just get it in the normal range, and 2 years to get it to the 50 level, a level that is much better where you are not groogy all the time and functioning much better. So in the process of getting the iron normal I found myself not taking my calcium regularly (at least 1000 per day) because you need to keep the iron and calcium 4 hours apart. Well the iron supplements I was taking was at least 3 times a day and having to spread the calcium between them was difficult, not too mention I was also taking thyroid medicine which has to be at least 2-4 hours difference from calcium or iron. So I was willy nilly with my calcium supplements, however, I know I was getting in at least 500mg calcium perday. Thinking it would work because I am a big fan of greek yogurt, cheese, kefir, and milk. The upshot is this I am now Diagnosed with Osteoporosis now. Now I am making sure I get 1500 to 2000 mg of calcium per day. I take my iron with my multivitamin 2 times a day plus a add a supplement of iron as well when taking the vitamin. My point here is that it is very important to make sure you take all your supplements if you have had the Gastric bypass and figure a way to get them in. Do not skip them. I am giving this advice from my own experience and trying to save someone else before its to late. Its hard to reverse osteoporosis, the =best cure is prevention. -
I am 7 years out from the Gastric by pass surgery. I have always been fanatical about taking my multivitamin supplements. Originally I didn't it was important to take iron supplements since I was in menopause and felt I was always healthy and never had any iron issues. Well it was approximately 2 years after surgery when I found myself anemic. My doctor did a ferritin (iron) check and found it to be 11 with the low end of normal being 20. Therefore I found myself starting out taking 30mg of iron a day. Three months later they checked the ferritin and it dropped to 9 even though i was taking the supplement . I ended up doubling it to 60, but 3 months later, it was still only 14 slightly higher but not in the range. Fast forward to the present, I now take 120 mg of iron a day and my ferritin level is at approx. remains at approximately 60. It took approximately 1 1/2 years to get my iron in the normal range, but to feel better and lively and not so tired, it is a good ideal to have the iron level at at least 50. My suggestion is to stay on top of it from the beginning.

Adding Fruits into Your Shakes?

Well, I started making my own protein shakes. Warning this takes a lot of dedication. Anyways I cultured my own Kefir..... which is loaded with whey protein, vitamins, and probiotics. However, to make sure I was getting enough vitamins and minerals I would also add a 1/2 scoop of a protein shake. It would all depend on what my fancy is for that particular day as to which type of fruit I would add. For instance, during berry season ( i love picking any kind of berries) I fresh pick wild black cap berries (one of the best Antioxidants too) freeze them and add them to my kefir shake. As a sweetener I use Stevia and I would use 1/2 scoop of the berry protein powder. The frozen berries usually suffice for thickening the shake but at times I like to add another very good for you food as a thickener and that is Chia Seeds. Then what I would do is just tally all the calories in the shake. Many times I would only drink 1/2 cup in morning and the rest in the afternoon -
I was eating watermelon at about 7-8 weeks out. I know some say watch the sugar content, but watermelon and cantelope are actually very good nutritional fruits with antioxidants. I did find that because it really breaks down after thoroughly chewing it that you do eat a little more of it then you think

Yes that sounds like something we have all been familiar with at some point or another. YEsssss get rid of the dress and retire it. You have lots of friends here, but also consider this for the future. Look into group support where you are having your surgery done. If they don't have them then maybe that is a good goal for you to work towards and actually may find a lot of friends from your area having the same support issues -

I am 7 years out and that still sounds about right. I recently just did a pouch reset and I am about 3 weeks out on the reset and am maintaining about 600 calories per day and having weight loss with it. -
Did anyone ever get stoma stretched?

I am 7 years out RNY, and just recently was hospitalized with what they called a Gastric outlet obstruction. They did a Cat Scan and it showed that my stomach had distended quite a bit and that it showed a obstruction. What I found interesting was that I had dryed heaved over and over all night long before going finally dragging myself in, to only hear them say the stomach was distended with food in it. How weird it wouldn't come up. Anyways, I will be having a scope this tomorrow and they will be looking at stretching the stoma........ will have to follow up on that later -

I have had a RNY as an original not a revision. Not all patients having RNY have the same outcomes. I can tolerate some sugars without having the immediate dumping, but another issue that can frequently become a problem for some is the post gastric bypass hypoglycemia effect. This is when for instance you have had a small amount of food and in the next 1 1/2 - 2 hours your blood sugar drops. I have this problem and it is not fun at all. It is very frustrating because many times you loose complete functioning ability until you can stabilize your sugars. I have found that in learning to manage this that when this happens it is more often after ingesting a food with some sugar or carbohydrate content. For instance even sugarfree jelly on a slice of low carb bread with peanut butter will cause the sugar to drop, because there is still a small amount of sugar in the sugarfree substitute. Anyways, you may want to consider this as a challenge should you get the RNY revision. If you are one of the lucky candidates to get this problem it is a life long problem that is hard to deal with but can be managed. -
Celebrate multi vitamins are my go to vitamins. I take Celebrate Multi complete 60 plus I also take an additional Celebrate 30mg iron + C supplement because I had the Rou and Y procedure which causes low iron levels. You should have your ferritin (iron) checked as well because iron deficiency can also cause hair loss
