What was your pre-op diet?
shortmocha replied to KristinOlivia's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just started mine yesterday. I was down .5 lbs this morning. I got my pre-op diet on Wednesday and was told to start as soon as I could get to the store. My surgery is June 26th so it'll be about 2.5 weeks on the diet. Meal 1 - 8oz skim or 1% milk with 1/2 scoop whey protein powder isolate and 4 oz fruit Meal 2- RTD protein shake or 8oz skim or 1% with whole scoop protein powder Meal 3- 6-8oz low fat, light yogurt (preferably Greek) with no fruit chunks <7g sugars and 4oz fruit or veggie Meal 4 - 1oz nuts or 2TBSP peanut butter or 1/2 c beans or hummus and 4oz fruit or veggie Meal 5 - 4 oz protein, 4 oz veggie with 1TBSP raw olive oil and 1/2 c whole grain starch or 1 slice whole grain bread or 1/2 potato Meal 6 (optional) - 8oz skim or 1% milk with 1/2scoop whey protein powder isolate and 4 oz fruit 3 Hours between each meal and drink 100oz of water or fluids So far not too bad. The hardest part is the 100oz of fluid. While I'm happy that there is some food on my plan, there's a convenience element to just shakes rather than measuring out a bunch of stuff and reading labels, but I guess the point is to get into the habit for after surgery. So the blender, scale, and 4oz containers are my new best friends. =) -
I really messed up on pre diet
shortmocha replied to Oceanlove's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Like everyone's said... what's done is done. Time to move on. You seem to have an all or nothing thing happening. Either you're on the diet or you're way way off. If you can, maybe figure out ahead of time some acceptable cheats that will get you over the hump. I'm not advocating cheating, but if it's gonna happen then let's try not to undo all your good work. You seem to have a fondness for cheeseburgers (so do I LOL), let's definitely leave off the bread. Protein is good... carbs not so much. An even better step in the right direction is just a piece of chicken breast. When you're on a liquid diet sometimes it's the act of chewing that you need or just a little something heavier in your stomach. You can get that without going overboard. Maybe plan ahead... you're on the liquid diet, but if you hit the wall what are a couple of reasonable things you will allow yourself. -
I'm June 26th. Started my pre-op diet today. While I'm sure there will be many times I'll be happy I can have some foods... fruits, veggies, lean meat, 1/2 potato, yogurt... prepping is a pain in the butt. There might be something to be said for the convenience of just grabbing a shake and going.

I'm type 1 and mine was 8.3 last time I got it checked. No problems so far.

Finally finished. Waiting for surgery date! Please share how long it took to get a date after submission to ins!
shortmocha replied to ShianneB's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my final appointment on a Wed. I don't know if my doctor submitted Thursday or Friday, but I had an approval from the insurance the following Wednesday. So less than a week. My surgery was scheduled for 6 weeks later. The 6 weeks is primarily because my doctor moved offices at the end of May so that pushed the surgery out some. It doesn't seem like most people have 6 weeks between approval and surgery. -
Non-liquid Pre-op diet?
shortmocha replied to lysdexic_girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just got my pre-op diet yesterday and was told to start it as soon as I could get to the store. My surgery is on June 26th so that will be roughly 2.5 weeks. My diet is not just liquids either. I have 6 meals/snacks. All but 1 include either fruit or veggie. 1 includes yogurt. 1 includes nuts, peanut butter, beans or hummus. 1 includes meat, veggie, and whole grain starch or 1/2 potato. I'm hoping it won't be too bad. The only real issue is a trip to Disney for the weekend between now and surgery. Don't quite know how that's going to work. -
I think it's the intent like a previous poster said. The intent usually is meant in a nice, supportive, "I'll do what I can for you". At the holidays I generally say Merry Christmas to people because that's what I celebrate. If I know someone is Jewish, I try to remember to say Happy Hanukah. I would hope if I slip up they wouldn't take offense but would accept it with the cheer and greeting it was intended. I think that unless someone knows you, most religious statements are more a testament to what the speaker believes not what they think you believe. If I say Merry Christmas that tells you what I believe. To be honest a lot of people who say that during the holidays do so in honor of season, as a greeting, not so much for religious meaning. It's just people trying to be nice. Same thing with saying "I'll pray for you". They're not trying to convert you... just saying what they believe might help you even if you don't believe it. I hear your point of view but I find it hard to not see good intentions. If someone knows you're atheist and greet you in a religious way or in an unkind, throw it in you face kinda way then I see the issue. But if someone doesn't know you and they're saying something they honestly think is kind, it's hard to see the harm. I know I say Bless you when someone sneezes all the time. I do it in a gesture of kindness. I hope someone wouldn't take offense but would know most people who say Bless You or even God Bless You mean well. In a world with so much cruelty and craziness, God or no God we can use all the humanity and kindness we can get.

I had 3 c-sections before the tuck. I was easily up walking at the hospital all 3 times. The tummy tuck was definitely much worse. After the c-sections I was able to go home and go about my business. I spent a full week and a half with my parents trying to recover from the tummy tuck. I had to sleep in a chair the first couple of days, then in bed with a bunch of pillows. Then there's the drain that's left in for the first few days. The compression garment wasn't fun either and that had to be worn for weeks. I was very please with the results but those first couple of weeks are nothing to take lightly.

Knowing your stats would help. I can tell you lipo helps if you have 10 lbs to lose or if you have a trouble area... a little pooch that you can't get rid of with weight loss or some women get that little role around your bra. Little truly cosmetic stuff. I had a tummy tuck after my third child because I had a ton of extra skin (13 lb baby will do that too you LOL). The surgeon did a little bit of lipo then, but he told me to get off as much weight as possible because he could only liposuction so much. Doctors can't suck out 50 lbs with lipo. He did the tummy tuck and sucked a little from the bra line and a little from my hips to give my upper body a nice shape. By no means did this process get me down to my ideal weight. It was more so to help my shape after the wear and tear of the 3 huge babies. Believe me if I could've gotten all my extra weight sucked out I would've =P Even if you have lipo it doesn't prevent weight/fat from coming back on. While I have maintained my shape over the years I have put on pounds which is why I'm now having WLS. If you're on these boards I'm assuming you've got more than than 10-15 lbs to get off. If you've got a moderate amount of weight to lose maybe just diet and exercise and lipo might help with the last 5-10 lbs, but if you've got a BMI that would qualify you for WLS, then that's your best option not lipo.

Cruising after VSG
shortmocha replied to TLHvsg2018's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm going on one 5 months after my RNY. June surgery and a Thanksgiving cruise. I'm happily willing to trade in the drink package for a tankini poolside. I'm planning to throw some protein powder and bars into the luggage just to make sure I don't fall behind during the 7 days of fun in the sun. I'm sure all those stairs will be so much easier after I've shed some pounds. Cruising is my favorite vacay. It used to be all about the drink and dining package. I'm thinking a splurge on a few new clothes and maybe I'll actually use the workout clothes I pack every time but never actually pull out. Maybe I'll even brave the water slides with the kids. Good luck and have fun. -
I have Cigna and it took about 4-5 days. I don't know the exact day the doctor submitted after my last appointment. I don't know if other insurance companies have this on their website but on myCigna.com you can follow the progress of your precertifications. Each day I could check and see that it was in progress and then it went to approved. The doctor had to provide a surgery date and that was listed there too. On the website it says precertifications take 5-10 days. Mine was on the quicker side of that. The waiting is terrible.

Liquid diet alternatives
shortmocha replied to Starfish23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with Apple203. I've been trying a few to see what I like so I can stock up before surgery and not waste a lot of money on ones I don't like. I like the ready made protein shakes. If there's a Vitamin Shoppe by you they usually have bottles in the fridge where you grab several different ones without having to buy the whole pack. I agree about premier. I like muscle milk as well. But I love Iconic Cafe Au Lait. It's coffee flavored. Since I tried it, I've replaced breakfast most morning with that. You can also try bone broth. It has 10g of protein. It's nice when you need something hot, but still want to get protein in. -
Got my approval. When I started this in November I thought I'd be done with the surgery by now. Cigna only required 3 months of doctor/NUT visits. I did my psych eval in January. At the end of February I was ready to go. Went to get my thyroid tested and it came back too high. I have a thyroid condition but I take meds and it's usually under control. The one time I really needed for it to be right it was totally wacky. Doc adjusted my meds and I had to wait a month to retest. Month goes by we retest and now it's too low. Cigna requires that your TSH be within the normal limits. We adjust the meds again and wait another month to retest and it's still too low. We adjust the meds again and I assumed I would be waiting yet another month, but my PCP is the best. He suggested WLS and was becoming more frustrated than me. He would've submitted after the first retest, but my surgeon said we shouldn't risk a denial by the insurance because the appeals process is brutal. But after the 2nd retest my PCP got with my surgeon and they decided to submit to the insurance anyway with an explanation about the thyroid. It took less than a week to hear back from Cigna that I got approved. I'll have my RNY on June 26th. YAY!!!

Thanks for the welcome. So glad to be joining the June-RNYers. I've been lurking, but it's nice to really be able to join in now. Can't wait for June.

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies Check In Here!
shortmocha replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm glad to be joining the summer group. Timing worked out great. I'm taking the kids to the Disney waterparks mid-June then having my surgery at the end of the month. Hopefully by my Thanksgiving cruise I will have shed lots of pounds and be on my way to looking and feeling fab. Bye bye cover-ups Hello tankinis. LOL -
Type 1 diabetes and gastric bypass
shortmocha replied to Cara R's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm interested to hear what responses you get. I'm on the road to gastric bypass as well and I have Type 1. My endo and I have discussed this. He's on board with my doing it, but says while there is a lot of documentation on Type 2 and bypass, not so much on Type 1. He says we'll have to monitor it closely. I have a continuous glucose monitor so I'm hoping this will help me stay on top of my levels and avoid lows. While RNY won't potentially get rid of Type 1 like Type 2, we are hopeful that the amount of insulin it takes to control my sugar will significantly decrease and that there will be positive results for my A1C. My main worry is having lows and how to treat them without dumping. -
Hi. I'm pretty new to the group. I started in December with my first consult. My insurance required 3 months of nutritionist / doctor supervised weight loss appointments, psych consult, letter of medical necessity and a normal TSH test. I've done all of this and a cardio consult that my PCP wanted. My TSH came back slightly elevated so I had to switch my meds and wait a month to be retested. My retest is next Tuesday, so assuming my levels are normal, we'll submit to insurance next week. I've heard it takes my insurance (Cigna) about a week to get back with approval or denial. I'm hoping for gastric bypass in late May.

Previous Surgeries still have Laparoscopic bypass
shortmocha replied to shortmocha's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone for the replies. I was able to attend my surgeon's info session last night and asked the same question. He echoed what you all have said. He said even with previous surgeries that 99.99% of the time bypass can still be done laparoscopically. I'm feeling much better. Hoping to get the insurance nailed down in the next 2 weeks and get my date. -
Previous Surgeries still have Laparoscopic bypass
shortmocha posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm new. Still checking all the boxes to apply for insurance. I've done all my weight loss / NUT consults, psych, and cardio. I'm just waiting on my thyroid test so we can apply for insurance. I'm going for gastric bypass. I'm worrying whether I'll have problems with doing it laparoscopic. I've had 3 c/sections and most concerning is the umbilical hernia I had to have repaired after my last pregnancy. In the multiple episodes of Dr. Now and online research I hear about adhesions. It's an easy decision to have the surgery laparoscopically. However getting cut completely open makes me think twice. I have had 3 c-sections, so it's not like I haven't been cut open. Having to have wls open makes me think twice due to the significant increase in recovery time, increased potential for complications, and last (yes it's makes me a little shallow) the wicked scar down the middle of my stomach. Anybody with previous abdominal surgeries and still able to have wls laparoscopically? How does it work, do you agree upfront that if it can't be done laparoscopically that the doctor will convert to open or do they close you up and you have to go back later for open surgery? Anybody end up with open, how did it go? Was anybody who was concerned they might have issues able to find out before surgery which method would work via some scan?
