Weird Stuff That Delayed Your Surgery Approval

My delay was caused by many blood clots in both lungs. I ended up in the ER than admitted in the hospital exactly 3 weeks before my surgery. I spent 4 full days in the hospital, then when they released me it took about 24 hours to find out I was allergic to the blood thinner they gave me an hour before leaving the hospital. As an inpatient I was on a 24/7 IV heparin drip, no problem. I was switched 2 different times to different medication. They finally decided to put me on warfarin. September 2018 was when this all began. I had to see a hematologist, to make sure the blood clots were not from an underlying clotting disorder. All those test came back negative. What was finally decided was that the birth control my ob/gym put me on 42 days before this happened caused all the clots. I can not have any type of estrogen ever again. Everything is on track. My hematologists cleared me for surgery. I am on day 11 of my 14 day liquid pre-op diet. I have lost 110 lbs from March 2018 until my last weigh in on 2/7/19. I have lost a total of 154 lbs from May 2017 I am ready for this and can’t wait to get this transformation started on 2/12.

    30 second elevator interview

I’m a 48 yr old wife, dog / cat mom and a lab technician. I love to swim, knit, garden, and travel with my husband of 26 years. Spring is my favorite time of year.
  3. I got my date. After my first date had to be canceled 16 days before surgery due to blood clots in both lungs . I’ve been waiting for my multitude of doctors to agree it was time. I was told on Friday I could schedule surgery for the end of January. I have to have a CT angiogram on January 3, than see my hematologists on January 8 and if he clears me I am good to go on January 29th. Thank you all for your support and sharing you lives with all of us. Have a SAFE, HEALTHY and HAPPY NEW YEAR

    Choices of liquids

Tomato soup may be to acidic for your new stomach. High in carbs and sugar. Try low sodium chicken soup and strain out the broth to drink and give the rest to the family or dog.

    Protein shakes...

If you ore make your shake and jet it set in the fridge the foam / bubbles go away in about 15 minutes. When you mix it up just gently tip the container a few times.

    Under 3 weeks left....nervous

I did well durning the holidays. No weight gain, I lost 6 lbs this month so far. My surgery is January 15th . I start my 14 day liquid only pre op diet on December 31. I celebrated New Years with my husband yesterday with my last glass of wine. I am not nervous at this point, but I am sure the nerves will show up eventually.
  7. When it comes to a post op diet it seems every doctor is different. Mine goes in 2 week cycles. But when my new cycle starts and I can’t tolerate it I step back down to the previous one for another week. Then go up again after that. It all depends on how your body reacts. My NUT told me it can take 4 to 6 months for some people to eat solids again after a RNY. That is also the surgery I am having January 15, 2019.

    Life without NSAIDS?

Midol has caffeine. My program is a no caffeine before and never again after surgery. This was a point pushed at every class at least 4 or 5 times an hour. We are asked every time was see the NUT, PA or Doctor about caffeine.

    Tell Me Your Pre-op Timeline

1st visit 30 days later I started the mandatory 6 months of classes. Durning the 6 months in no specific order I had cardiac clearance ( ekg, stress test), x-rays, blood work, upperGI, h. Pylori, head shrinker, already use a CPAP all I need for that was a letter from my sleep doctor, clearance from primary , because I am childbearing age I had to start birth control pills . That caused 24 blood clots in my lungs and pushed my surgery to January or February . I was scheduled for surgery when I ended up in the Er and admitted for 4 days. I had already stopped the birth control pills to have surgery. I was one of the lucky ones that have that awful reaction. So when it’s all said and done from March 7, 2018 to today I have lost 89 lbs. I will have time to lose more by surgery. I am shooting for another 15 lbs.

    Tips please

Unjury makes a great chicken soup protein powder. You will have to ask your NUT if it allowed on your pre-op diet. It is a no no for my pre-op diet but post op is fine.

How Often to Eat on Purée??

It is going to be different for everyone. If you are an insulin diabetic you eat every 2 -3 hrs other wise my NUT says 3 hrs. As a T1 diabetic I am hoping to do 21/2 to 3 but we will see soon.

    Vitamin Patches

My program doesn’t allow the patch’s. Your NUT can tell you exactly what to use. I buy the Chews at my doctors office. I was using a approved prenatal vitamin , I had to switch because the iron was way to much for me.
  13. Most insurance companies have 15 working days to decide on any type of elective surgery. Unfortunately because this is classified as elective they can also add on an extension of up to 15 additional working days. I would call them if you haven’t heard anything in the next 5 working days.

    HELP

My program allows 2 crystal lights a day. They rather we drink regular water.

    Ugh! Halloween candy is here.

We have lived in our home for 25 yrs and have never handed out candy. We leave the deck lights off and watch horror movies on Halloween.
  16. Long post My surgery was scheduled for October 22, I was on my count down to my 15 day liquid diet and ready for surgery. That isn’t going to happen now for at least 3 months possibly up to a year. I had upped my exercise routine about a month ago. I had finished my last set of the day when I felt a sharp pain in my mid back left side. It kept hurting while I showered and went through my day. I took some meds and went on with life. By evening i was sure I had strained a muscle. I went back to my gym the next day, I swim, than lift weights and showed than home for a late breakfast . It started to hurt to breath but when I took a deep breath it felt like someone was stabbing me in the back and my chest. By 6am Saturday morning I was in so much pain ever breath I took doubled me over. My husband rushed me to the hospital. After blood test, ekg , x-rays and CT scan I had my dx. My results were back from CT very fast. I have 21 blood clots in my left lung and 9 in my right lung. When they showed me the CT scan they counted the little buggers. They started me on IV Heparin and got me a room. I was in shock when they told me I had all of these blood clots. I asked what caused them. I never had any pain in my legs where they normally start and move up to your lungs, heart and brain. I have been losing weight now for 7 months, exercising and eating healthy. What the hell it had to be now just a month before surgery. To answer that YES!!!! I am damn lucky to be alive. I am glad this happened now and not in the middle of surgery or after. My doctors said that they feel the estrogen in the birth control pills I was on caused the blood clots. I started them because my periods have gotten crazy after losing 80lbs in the last 7 months. I was on them 42 days. I was due to stop them the day I was admitted to the hospital . Because we have to stop them a month before surgery. I also found out I now have to do blood test to see if I have a blood clotting disorder. I am on blood thinners for a year at this point. I am sad my surgery is not October 22, but glad this came up before. I know birth control pills are the easiest way for a lot of women. My doctor said very casually they have some side effects but those pass in a few months. There is a very small risk of blood clots. Then she went on with another subject. I knew this was a possibility but it was not even in my realm of thinking when I went to the ER. Please don’t wait 8 days like I did. Even if it is only a strained muscle if you are taking birth control pills and you feel off for any reason call your doctor or get to the ER. I have my last class for my required 6 months of nutritional education on Wednesday this week, all my other test are done, I was ready. I am still ready. This is not going to stop me from my surgery and a health life. I am more determined then ever to see this through.

    Questions for the nervous.

If you are on the 6 month class schedule they want your BMI to drop as much as possible. Most insurance companies only want your starting BMI and proof you can lose weight and follow your doctors and NUTs plans.

    Anyone not need plastic surgery?

There are some people that need the skin removed because of the infections they get. If you have a doctor and a great billing department to fight for you, and every skin infection is documented with photos your insurance may pay. Others just feel better mentally with the skin removed.

Birth control pills and blood clots

RapidFirePickle I got into my hematologists very fast, he has already started to run a few genetic blood test and Factor V Leiden was negative, I see him again soon and if the other one is negative we will draw more blood and run more test.

Aunt flo is killing me! Any advice?

Have you talked to your OB/GYN? Now that I can’t take birth control pills ( due to blood clots in my lungs ) my doctor is going to prescribe a non hormonal pill that will cut my flow and period time in half. I will have to get the name for you when I pick up my script.

    CBD oil

Foof76 you should not need a script for CBD oil. It is legal to buy in all 50 states. I am sure you can find a place to buy it. I use eadansgarden.com
  22. I am still pre-op. I have an amazing surgeon, she performs both RNY and sleeve. Most of her patients choose sleeve surgery over RNY. She allows her patients to choose which surgery is best for them unless there are other health risk for one over the other. I am having a RNY because I am T1 diabetic and it will allow me to lose 70 % - 80% of my weight. One of the reasons some doctors push RNY is it cost more than the sleeve. I think that is a shameful thing for them to do, but they still do it. You may want to see another doctor. She may be at a center for excellence but that doesn’t mean anything. Good luck in your decision. Remember she works for you, not the other way around.

    Non Scale Victories

I know this is an old post but I enjoy reading the new added non scale victories. I had one today. I will have my RNY in October. I am counting down. So this is a big one for me. Even before surgery . I used to love to do yard work. When we bought our house 18 yrs ago my husband and I would spend the day doing yard work together , we loved it. Well that changed when my weight went up and up and up. Well today was the first day I was able to mow our yard in years. Not only did I mow the entire yard, I only had to stop to put gas in the lawn mower . My husband was so happy and proud of me. I think happy because I asked if I could mow next time. We have a good sized yard and I had a great time. I laughed like crazy when I realized I was done and he kept asking me if I was ok. I told him I was great and gave him a big hug and kiss. He started to laugh with me.
  25. The shots will depend on a couple of things. If you are on blood thinners before surgery ( yes you will stop taking them before surgery for x amount of days), what your pro-time ( blood test to check how fast your blood clots) , you other medical conditions , and if your doctor uses them as a normal thing after this surgery. My doctors usually only give them in the hospital . As for the smell I had no idea. The gas, and bm yes .
