I'm 60. Anyone else over 50 doing RNY?

I’m soon to be 52- had bypass March 23rd,2018.I’ve lost 90 lbs and passed my goal weight! It’s been hard but so worth it. I! I’m also a surgical nurse who has seen tons procedures performed-honestly thought it would be like getting my gallbladder out- it’s NOT! It’s taken me all this time to feel “good” again. I have good days and bad- but all depends on how much protein and water I’m able to get in. It’s not a quick fix- you must deal with the mental side of it- but if you’re like me, and been an overweight yo yo dieter all your life, it is a great tool to set you on your path of learning to adjust your lifestyle and obtain better eating habits!

    How long off work/disability?

Hi Kate! I too am an OR nurse! I had bypass on March 26th! Yes! Getting my fluids in has been a huge struggle at work- I went back after 5weeks and should have taken longer as I was exhausted the first couple of weeks! As you know- most ORs are hurting for nurses- so I guess I bargained before I returned to work as I knew they needed me-I asked my manager and director if I could keep a water bottle in our sub sterile so I can step out occasionally to drink- thankfully they agreed. I’m good if I get 32oz in while at work- I have had to leave work early as was pretty dehydrated and weak- couldn’t even process clearly- the next week got 2liters of fluid( after 6sticks as I was so dehydrated!) but felt so much better! Listen to your body- talk to your supervisors - they are in medical field and hopefully will work with you!
  3. I had surgery at 239- I only did the liquids pre op for 4 days- in 5’9 ( on a good day). I lost 10lbs before but I count them since it was a short time frame- I had bypass on March 26th- I’m currently 188lbs! Don’t think you won’t lose- you will! My body has done a complete 180 and knows what I can eat and how much! Trust me- it happens! My goal is 160lbs but would’ve happy at 145! Just came back from vacation in the Bahamas- I felt great in a swimsuit and didn’t get worn out from all the walking we did!

    Week 8: -34lbs and I feel great!

Awesome!! I’m in my 7th week post op- went back to work last week- it’s been a real struggle to get my fluid in also!! Very weak today! I feel good but not ya know? I take sub lingual B 12 and don’t see much difference. Oh well, hopefully this too will pass!

    Dark Urine

You’re dehydrated! You need to drink- urine should be light yellow to clear if your getting enough fluids

    Recovery Time

I had mine March 26 and will go back April 30. Originally my surgeon said I could go back in 2weeks. Uh no. I’m a surgery nurse and my job is very physically demanding. So changed to 4weeks. However, I was not having any energy and would poop out really quickly. So then extended to 5weeks. This is my choice - I am worried about getting my water in as I get pretty weak if not hydrated. Thankfully spoke with my boss and they are going to work with me on this issue! ( in surgery- sterile environment- no food or drinks- also can’t just leave a patient to go drink or keep water by your side[emoji849]) But I’m down 30lbs and feeling great!!!!

    Note to self

I’m 4weeks out and had dumping last night- worse thing ever! I was talking w my family and eating way to fast I think. Any way took me 1hr to actually throw up anything- and that was by making myself do it. It was like my gag reflex was gone. Lesson for me!
  9. I’m 4weeks out- I get it if I don’t chew chew chew! And learn to “listen” when you are getting full!
  10. Hey all! I’m 51 and had my bypass on March 26th, 2018. I am a surgery nurse so knew what the surgery entailed. I’m down 28lbs now. My struggle has been getting my fluids in- I worry about going back to work and being able to get the opportunity to drink as I get pretty weak if I don’t hydrate!! Working in the OR does not give me the luxury of keeping a water bottle by my side. Any other surgery nurse bypassers out there? Also, had my first dumping yesterday!! Aweful!! Guess I ate too fast?
