Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
J San replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Great to hear!! Doing pretty well also. Closest to eating for me is sloshing SF Jello through my teeth to get it to liquid form. On all clear liquids... so water, clear protein drinks, broth, SF IcePops and SF Jello. Strangely not hungry at all yet and havn't had a meal since Wed morning. Don't need the pain meds, everything is tolerable but did take it twice yesterday to take the edge off a little from my back and sciatica pain. Getting around is slow going as the stretching from one position to the next pulls a bit. But otherwise can't complain. Good luck!!! @Preyes Sorry to hear your having a hard time. Hopefully nothing serious. Take it slow and like everyone always says walk as often as you can to release that gas. Best of luck to you!!! -

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
J San replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1st post here on the post op summer buddies thread. I posted late on the pre op thread. I had my surgery on the 12th last week so I'm going into my 4th day post. Everything went pretty well. Gas pains were the worst but as the days go by that is getting better as well. Doing a week of clear liquids which is not bad but can't seem to fit it all in so I just do my best. I started a thread in the general discussion area so I won't go into all the detail here. Just wanted to say hello and look forward to meeting many of you. Good Luck Everyone!!!! -
Hey NJ neighbors. Home now for 3rd day and feeling better every day. Best of luck to you two and to all the others that mentioned dates in the next few weeks.

Went into hospital at 8:30 am and sat and waited until almost 1pm when they brought me into the OR. I had zero nerves or worries, just ready to get in there. After surgery I was OUT of it. Nurses or whoever told me when I was in my room they would not give me pain meds if I was going to sleep as the pain could not be that bad if I was able to sleep through it. I was so out of it I didn't care at that point. Woke up a few hours later with the worst abdominal pain ever and was ready to kill the pain med lady. She seemed to take here time getting to me... The next few hours went by and every time a nurse asked if I needed pain meds I told her to fill it up. I wasn't going to pass again and deal with what I did earlier. Pretty much slept on and off until about noon the next day. I had a lot of abdominal pain (gas) and nausea. Did not vomit at all but it sucked holding it back. I did not want to know what the belly pain would feel like hacking anything up. I had a lot of phlegm so coughing that up was bad enough. Did my swallow test and that went well other than the taste of the liquid. Started sipping water and broth and that also went well. Walked as often as I could when I was awake. Had my last dose of pain meds friday around noon. Nurse offered one last shot but told me I would have to wait an extra hour before discharge if I did, I passed. Did get a shot of the nausea meds though. Got home after 7pm Friday evening and pretty much sat on the sofa and fell asleep. Woke around midnight with nausea and gas pains but just went up to my bed. I had an old foam cushion that I cut to sit on an angle and put my pillows on that so I was almost in a seated position while sleeping. Woke at 4am with the same nausea and gas pains and was kind of out of it. So I just sat in silence and tried sipping my water and clear protein. Took until about noon for the nausea to subside but the gas pains were still there. I did figure out that If i stretched my neck looking straight up and breathed deeply in and out while having the gas pain it would sometimes release in a burp or just air bubble escaping. That works wonders and I've been doing it since. They sent me home with liquid Tylenol with codeine and I took a dose of that late evening just because of the belly soreness and sore back, hip and knee joints. Was just enough to take the edge off. Got down about 40g of protein and 60oz of liquids. I did way myself just to see and I was up 2lbs from surgery date, expected. So woke this morning and feel so much better. No nausea very little gas pain but still have to make sure to sip my liquids. Don't think I'm hungry as it just feels like belly soreness. Havn't had a meal since Wednesday morning. Joint pain has gotten less and belly soreness is lower. Already down 8oz of bone broth with protein which by the way tastes horrible. The most bland watered down taste ever and the clear protein drinks have the horrible fake sugar taste. But If that's the worse of my problems I'll take it. I see some of you are having protein shakes, is that part of the clear liquid diet or just approved on your program? It's not on my list of "ok's". Anyway, Thanks for listening/reading. Sorry for the super long post and BEST OF LUCK TO ALL ON THIS WONDERFUL JOURNEY!!!!!!!!

Thank you @Orchids&Dragons And you as well @Chrisb428 That's exactly what I did when starting this journey. I read tons of posts. Don't overthink things and work yourselves up. I went to the hospital wearing a tshirt draws a pair of shorts and flip flops. In my bag I had powder (didn't use) Blistex (used) BioTene (used) toothbrush and paste (used) phone charger (used). Didn't need anything else. I slept 90% of the time and the rest was given to me. I had no worries or nerves. I just accepted the outcome would be whatever it was and think I had a better time because of it. Good Luck to All of You!!!!

Premier Protein Ins. Coverage
J San replied to peglynmc's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Yes please. I would love to know if this is still available. Any other link or somewhere to apply? I tried premierprotein.com and could not find anywhere that showed insurance coverage. -
No issues other than the norm with the liquid diet. I do have issues from time to time but I think it's due to the meds I'm on. Killed my libido and when I was drinking it didn't last long when it did work. I'm 2 days post op, had my VSG on the 12th this past thursday. (Think you typed your numbers wrong). I think do to the trauma of the surgery or the pain pills or combo of everything, Junior has no interest in coming out to play at all. BUT from all I read and heard from other WLS male patients that all goes away and it's like we are teenagers again. Can't wait for that stage. I know the wife won't be happy..... Maybe it's just the emotions of what's to come. I wouldn't worry about it to much. Give it time and see how things go. If you have issues down the line bring it up with your PCP. Good luck with it all, especially your surgery and recovery!!!

Could it be the pain meds giving you the headache. I would mention it to your nurse and see what she says. They can give you something else for the other pains as well as the headache. I'm sorry, I just saw how old this post was. Hope you figured it out.....

Got home yesterday evening. No complications on surgery side. Gas pain, nausea. belly ache, flem. Have been out of since after surgery. Will start a new thread once I'm somewhat normal. Thanx all for the well wishes. -
Took exactly 2 weeks from date my surgeon's office was supposed to submit paperwork. I think they were late submitting though. I also have Aetna.

Less sweet and no nasty fake sugar after taste but it is still a protein shake so it's not like it's from Dairy Queen. If you like almond milk I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I've made it with skim milk and with water. All 3 are good but the almond milk was the best. Good luck!!! -
thirty pound mountain to climb/premier protein
J San replied to actuallylosingit's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I use body fortress whey protein powder. I buy it at Walmart. I have tried vanilla and chocolate/peanut butter and both taste good. No fake sugar after taste and not too sweet when drinking it. AshAsh1 's recommendation is perfect. You will probably get tired of the shakes no matter which you use. Maybe do the 2 shakes during certain days during the week and other days do the lean protein? Must to mix it up and not get tired of it all. Whatever works out, best of luck to you on your journey. -

Never tried Bariatric Advantage but did try Premier Protein. They were "OK" but the fake sugar after taste put me off a bit. I've been using Body Fortress, which they sell at Wallmart. Have had Vanilla and Chocolate and Peanut Butter and they taste pretty good even mixed with plain water. 60g of protein per scoop. -

@pumpkinlocks Welcome and best of luck next week. Sorry to hear about the crappy time your having with the diet. Are the shakes all your allowed? Can you have pickles? They don't really fill you up like a meal but do satisfy the hunger for a bit. Also drink that water, It will fill your belly and help with the hunger pains. Best of luck to you with the remainder of the diet. -

Best of luck @greensmoothie on Friday and welcome to the site. Hope your recovery goes super smooth!! -
@shrinking_wildflower So sorry for the hard times your having. Have you looked into a local support group maybe? I know most surgical teams have weekly meeting setup. I know it's probably tough for you to get there but maybe in a few days you'll be up to it. It's too bad you didn't make pals with someone from here that was local to you. I know if I was near by I'd come hang out with you and help out with what I could. I really hope things get better for you VERY SOON! Keep your head up and Keep us updated with your progress.

Time to be honest!!!
J San replied to Simpson062681's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is crazy. My NUT drew up a moc diet plan for one week. Each day covered a different meal, breakfast lunch and dinner. There were things on her diet, like cheese, that were not included on the other paperwork she gave me with what was ok to eat for the diet. -

Time to be honest!!!
J San replied to Simpson062681's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well today is my last day of this diet. Gotta say I did wind up cheating but not on junk. There were 3 meals that I had a bigger portion of protein than the 3oz suggested with the diet. It was the 3 day that I ate steak. It was to good to not have just a bit more. But in my defense I stayed under 800 calories on most days and stayed below 900 calories on the days I cheated. I also did not have the snacks allowed on almost all of the diet, even the freebies were minimal. Pickles were my go to but there were 3 days at the beginning of the diet that I had salad greens (both freebies). Good luck everyone!!! -

@Lioness815 I'll be right there with you. Have to be at hospital for 10am to get things going. No nerves as of yet, we'll see what the morning brings. For sure had some stupid dreams last night about losing weight but other than the weight loss the rest of the dream was just bananas. Best of luck to you and hoping for a pain free speedy recovery for you. -
That's awesome Congrats!!!!
