Bingeing with Bypass

Have you tried brushing your teeth earlier in the evening? Most foods don't taste good after toothpaste. -

Here's the plus side to my swallowing issues: I can't eat a single thing you've listed except maybe the hummus, if it were watered down (but then, who'd want it?) -

After all, we've all gone through this very expensive surgery and difficult transition. Why on Earth do we feel bad about putting $8 worth of extra food in the trash? I'm as frugal as the next girl, but it's not like we grew up in the Great Depression! -
Best wishes for an uneventful surgery and a speedy recovery!

85% of my stomach remove (sleeve)
Orchids&Dragons replied to Beltran01's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How far out are you from surgery? "Buyer's remorse" is really common for the first few weeks because the recovery can be rough. But look at posts 4+ weeks out, most people are really happy they did it. Hope you feel better soon! -
Bingeing with Bypass

I struggle with this, too. Once you're full, immediately put the left-overs away. If you're in a restaurant, ask for the to-go box when you order so that you're not stuck there with a full plate in front of you waiting for the server to get back to you. Part of this is just acknowledging that life isn't fair. We're not those people who can eat anything and stay trim. But think about it - life isn't fair - we've been given this amazing opportunity to improve our lives that a lot of people can't take advantage of; whether they can't get time off work, or can't afford it, or have health problems that preclude them from surgery, etc. We've been blessed. If all else fails, once you've eaten, pour salt all over the left-overs so that they're inedible. (Old Weight-Watchers strategy) -
Don't buy too many of the Isopures to begin with. I found that they left a gross film in my mouth. UGH!

Having surgery while in college
Orchids&Dragons replied to MTaylorEE's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
If you have a long walk to classes or carry around a lot of books or a heavy laptop, you're probably going to need a week minimum to recuperate. And believe me, at a few-days post op, you are not moving quickly. Plus, you will be really tired for a week or two and it's altogether possible you'll get a case of the post-op "stupids". We all react to anesthesia differently. I think Spring Break is a great idea, if you can swing it. Good luck! -
OK, you apparently got some really weird nutritional info growing up! I never heard that the appendix was the waste bin of the intestines!
-
Protein waters aren't quite as sweet as the shakes. And you can dilute them even further if you want. I like Protein2O.
-
Definitely a question for your surgeon.
-
I don't know anyone who's had their appendix out, so I'll take your word on that one!
-
Yeah! Fantastic!

I love that style of kayak! So much fun! Glad you're back into it!

To straw or not to straw
Orchids&Dragons replied to Mitzimom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'd avoid them real close to surgery because your tender tummy will be very sensitive to that little extra bit of air. Once you've healed some, you likely won't have a problem with straws. I use them all the time. -
You actually need to do both. In order to get your protein numbers correct, that needs to be measured by weight. But then, make sure the entire volume of your meal doesn't exceed the "volume" number you want. For example, if you're only wanting to eat 1/2 cup of food/meal - weigh out the protein you want to eat, put it in the measuring cup, then fill the rest of the cup with your veggies/sides. Does that make sense?
-
Now you're extra-concentrated sweetness!
-
I've seen them refuse because you didn't lose enough weight, but I haven't seen a refusal if the person developed GERD, but I guess there are some out there.
-
Focus on things that count for both fluids and protein: Protein shakes, protein water, broth with added protein powder, yogurt, etc. That's the best way to hit your numbers in the beginning when you can't get too much down. Good luck!

I think the most telling proof for the low percentage of revisions is insurance. If there were a significant number of revisions, insurance companies would drop the sleeve like a hot potato and just require RNY to begin with. They don't.
