So I am post op day 2 with gastric bypass and still at the hospital because of dehydration. I cant seem to get the liquids down. Also just started this evening I am belching like crazy and it hurts! I get this burning epigastric pain and it makes me nauseous then I burp a ton. Anyone else experience this? Also how is the heck did you guys get 64 oz of water down everyday? I have barley gotten through a 16oz bottle of water. They are sending me home later this evening but I am scared I will just end up in the ER with dehydration.

I am sure there are several threads about this but when I try to search a gazilion threads come up. I am post op day 6 and on full liquids. I noticed that I can easily down a cup of jello or pudding in 10 min without a problem. I don’t feel full at all. I have stretched it out to 20 min but doesn’t make a difference. Also since I can have cream soups I made some cream of potato and was able to eat 1/2 a cup in 10 min easily. I still never feel full. Is this normal?

Don’t worry it’s super easy. They usually give you propofol which is an anesthesia drug in your IV. You don’t remember a thing but wake up like you had the best nap ever. The worst part is probably getting the IV at the beginning. Your throat might be a little scratchy but that usually goes away in an hour. The whole thing takes less than an hour but you will need someone with you to drive you home. My doctor did mine during my surgery because there wasn’t time before. -
Yeah they like the thickit powder it has no taste and just mixes into the thin liquids. I didn’t know they had all those other foods available.
-
That’s pretty cool! Thickit is something I use in the hospital a lot to thicken up patients liquids who have dysphasia or issues swallowing. Luckily with my Dr. I do a soft stage but not a puréed stage.

Ok I am five days post op and have had very little pain except right after surgery. Today I was just chilling in my recliner when I got this burning stabbing pain that rolled up into my chest, left shoulder and left shoulder blade. I felt like I needed to burp but no matter how much I burped the pain got worse. Then I got super nauseous and every time I dry heaved a puff of gas would come out. My stomach is all bloated and painful too. I don’t understand what happened? I didn’t drink anything different or do anything different. I got super light headed too, so I called my surgeon who said this is normal post op gas pain. How can I get rid of this? I tried walking, gas x, and laying down. Nothing seems to help much.
-
Yeah I have had several in fact. I think I figured it out though. I blend my shakes with protein powder in my nutra bullet and it makes half of it super foamy which I drank yesterday. I think that’s what made me so gassy.
-
I have been drinking water and premiere protein shakes with a scoop of syntax nectar and a scoop of PB2. I have been allowed to have cream soups since day 3 but every time I have tried I got super nauseous. I also eat sugar free jello/pudding and sugar free popsicles.

Ok so I woke up in post op with some serious pain. I just remember moaning and groaning. My surgery was at 10 and took about an hour. Finally made it to my room at 3pm. I honestly don’t remember much. I was getting dilaudid every 2 hours I took my first walk at 10pm but not far. I didn’t sleep much at all. This morning I went for another walk, and tried Percocet but it was not cutting it so I got more dilaudid. Took a nap. The nurse filled up 16 1 oz cups for me to drink in order to go home. But it hursts to swallow so I haven’t been doing too good. My Dr decided I will need to stay one more day to get pain under control, walk and drink more. My pain is all in my stomach and back. No shoulder pain. Right now I feel like I made a mistake getting this surgery but I am sure in a week or two that will change. Thanks for all the positive thoughts and prayers!

Congrats!! That’s awesome

So you use peppermint for nausea and digestion? Where do you put it? My mom swears by essential oils. I do think one of my biggest problems is I am not walking enough. I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks and I live alone. So I am anxious to go for walks because I worry what if something happens to me out in the street like I faint. My family has been by to walk with me once a day but it’s not enough. I just can’t get over this anxious feeling that if I walk outside alone something bad with happen. I wish I had a treadmill!

I was doing way better besides constant mental hunger until today. I am 5 days post op and am just now feeling bloated and having pretty severe gas pains in my chest and shoulders. I am sure it will pass. Thanks for checking up on me!
-
Yeah I have a heating pad I tried and I took a couple gas x strips. The pain in the shoulder is better but now I just feel so bloated it hurts.

I am four days post op too and just drank a whole protein shake in 10 min! I didn’t even think about it till I got super nauseous. I have been able to drink plenty of water and tea without any issues. At first I thought there was no way I could get it all down and now I am scared it’s too easy to get it all down. I am guessing because it’s water it enters and exits the pouch pretty quickly. It doesn’t linger there like food or something thicker. You will be fine!

Yay!!! Congrats! -
I agree! Thinking positively is the key to success.

I am 3 days post op too and I feel exactly the same way!! I don’t ever feel full! I feel weird pains and lots of grumbling and I belch a lot. I am starving and want to eat so bad! I was hoping the protein shake I had today would help but I drank the whole thing in 30 min and never felt full. I keep trying to listen to my body and recognize cues but nothing is consistent.

Thanks for this post! My surgery is tomorrow and I am also freaking out! I am mostly scared of the pain from the hiatal hernia repair. I heard that makes the whole things way worse! -
Thanks everyone! I have been researching more and becoming a little bit more comfortable.

So I am brand new on here. I needed to find people who know what’s about to happen to me. I was told 2 days ago my surgery will be next Wednesday. I haven’t had time to process even though this has been a 8 month long journey. I am getting RNY and hiatal hernia repair. I am terrified of not having control or knowing EXACTLY how I will feel after surgery. I am a nurse and I take care of post op patients all of the time, but I see the bad, the people who have complications, pulmonary embolisms, peritonitis, pneumonia, infections..... I just want to know exactly how bad the pain will be? Will I be able to take deep breaths or will I feel like I can’t breathe? How the hell am I supposed to drink 64oz of water when you can only take in like 1/2 an oz at a time! How can you take all these supplements when your pouch is practically the same size as them? My surgeon and his staff just say “everyone responds differently” “It depends on you and your body”..... Not helpful at all! So please help ease my anxiety and tell me I will be ok or give me positive advice.
