    April Sleevers check in!

Sleeved 4/5/18 HW-282 CW-218 GW-140 Doing pretty good now, but I feel like I'm in a big stall. I've learned to start my day with 24oz of water before I do anything else. This helps me get my water in. I'm eating 3 meals a day with the occasional snack on my extremely long work days. The hardest thing is managing my fluids on the days I have a 2 hour commute. I need to drink my water early enough so I don't have an accident in the vanpool. :o)
  2. I'm happy to hear you're doing well. I'm 2 months out. I know many go right back to work, but don't be afraid to take more time for you if your job allows it. You will be concentrating on drinking water, getting your proteins and walking as much as you can. An afternoon nap is also helpful. This is a big life change where you need to establish new habits. When you're back at work just always keep water with you. It becomes difficult to maintain your fluid intake when running to meetings. Best of luck to you on your journey.

    Questions I need to ask!

Great questions above. I'll add: What do you recommend for constipation?
  4. I'm loving Shrimp cocktail and chili beans. I found I am really craving something with flavor. My son made me a sous vides egg cup. He uses 1 egg, tsp gruyere cheese and a 1/4 slice of bacon. It's yummy. He makes me 4 a week. I just heat them in the microwave for 30 seconds.
  5. You gain weight due to the IV they had you on and it's your body's natural response to healing. Just keep sipping water and moving as much as you can. I also recommend not looking at the scale too often. I thought I wasn't losing, but I when I tried on clothes, I was losing inches. Hang in there.
  6. It really helped me talking to a psychologist. My work situation sounds very similar to yours. I am finding that as I lose weight the tides are shifting. I have continued to do my job well and take care of myself. My coworker who thinks he's my boss is showing his true colors and people are noticing. People are also noticing that I am taking care of myself and my job. I am starting to get much more support from coworkers I never spoke to before. Hang in there. Think of yourself as the butterfly that will emerge from the cocoon.

    Practicing for the sleeve?

In the beginning to help make sure your sips are small, I would just get a large cup of ice. I could only take a sip as it melted. This really helped.

    Water and protein

It's probably because you are 3 weeks out. I suggest adding flavor to your water (Mio, crystal light) if you don't like water. I also make sure to drink water first thing when I get up. I don't eat until my first bottle is empty. I also learned that different protein drinks are easier to drink and digest. I suggest for the first month at least to try a protein shake specifically designed for bariatric patients. I also use almond milk instead of cows milk because it seems to go down easier. The most important thing is to stay hydrated. Chicken broth, sugar free popsicles and caffeine free tea count towards your fluid intake. Good luck! It gets better.

    Practicing for the sleeve?

Put your spoon or fork down in between bites. I have found no matter how small my food is, if i eat or drink too fast it hurts. Think of your sleeve like a pipe. If you try to put too much in at one time, it overflows. Your sleeve will do the same. You will be able to take pills again. Most people are only on liquid pain meds the first few days.

    food stuck in pouch opening

I'm only 2 months out but I had this happen. For a week after I did liquids only. I think I irritated my sleeve. My doctor told me if the feeling did not go away he may need to scope me to help it resolve. Since then I have reminders in strategic places to chew, chew and then chew some more. I hope you feel better soon.
  11. I am almost 2 months out. I'm outside a lot and can't always drink water. I try to start and end my days with 24 oz of water, this way I don't get dehydrated during the day when it is ore difficult. I keep a ready to go protein shake incase I do get low energy. It can also be a protein water. I take a few sips in between whatever I'm doing. Marching band may take more energy and may require extra protein and fluids. Listen to your body. I would also make sure someone knows about your surgery incase of an emergency. Also because I'm a mom with college age kids; Be careful. (I'm not saying you'll do any of this, it's just because I care.) In college there are many parties and lots of drinking. Your body cannot handle what most others will be able to tolerate. Best of luck to you. Have fun.

... i am embarrassed to ask

I used Citrate of Magnesium to get things moving and then to keep me regular I add benefiber to my water daily. It dissolves and has no taste. If you are backed up, although it sounds icky sticking it up your rectum, a suppository will help loosen the stool.
  13. If you eat too fast or don't chew enough you will get bad pains. It took me some days to even out my system. I started using benefiber in my water every day. If the diarrhea persist, ask your doctor. You do not want to become dehydrated.

    Ways feel full

Try to change up the temperature. I could sip hot water or very cold water and ice chips. I also used sugar free popsicles and sugarfree Bigsticks. They also count as fluids.

    Busting outta hospital

It is normal for blood sugars to be all over the map with surgery. I required insulin in the hospital. (I never had it before surgery.) A week later I was off everything. Best of luck to you. Remember to watch your sugar intake. Read labels.

    New to the group

It is scary. This took me 5 years to make this decision. Is it easy, No. This is the best decision I have ever made. I only wish I did it years earlier. I am almost 2 month out now. For the first time in years, I can pick stuff up from the ground, I can walk to a meeting without being out of breath. I am no longer diabetic and stopped taking 4 medications and shots. This is a big change, but I am feeling so much better and healthier now that I am starting to dream again. This is your decision, but know we will all be here to support you no matter what you decide.
  17. I added chicken broth whenever I got light headed. It seemed to help. My doctor said it was better to up my protein and than to become dehydrated and weak.
  18. Mine aren't little anymore, but I would make sure you are not lifting any more than you should. The first week especially. Remember not to eat your kids leftovers. They will be eating more than you.

    3 days post-op and...,,

Head hunger is real. I start my day with 24oz of water. I make sure I drink first because it helps get all of my water in if I start with water also it helps me feel less hunger. Then I can make a better decision of what I am going to eat. Best of luck to you and remember one day at a time.

    when did everyone first poop?

Ask your doctor what he recommends. I had severe constipation. My doctor had me get Citrate of Magnesium and drink it. It's very sour. I suggest adding ice. I also started adding benifiber (it mixes in clear with no taste) to my water every morning. High protein combined with pain meds can bind you. Now, almost 2 month out, I eat beans every other day and everything is back to normal.

    Not sure it's working

I had the same issues in the beginning. I switched over to Unjury bariatric protein (https://www.unjury.com/unjury-starter-kit.html) and used sugar free Almond milk. I also started eating beans and chewing them to the purified stage. I actually enjoy chili since it is more flavorful and squish the beans with my fork. These help me feel full because they take longer to eat and are protein. They also help keep you regular.

    Hives and itchy skin

If you do not mind, please let me know what you find out.

    Hives and itchy skin

I am getting some weird itching too. My left hip and my back. My daughter thinks it's my skin cells coming back to life as I lose fat. :o) Vitamins are helping it be less. I use Barimelts. They all taste pretty good and the melt in your mouth, no swallowing. I bought the 3 month starter pack to keep cost down. They are worth every penny.
  25. I was exactly the same. I switched to a protein specially made for bariatric patients. I use Unjury, I have chocolate, vanilla and plain. I use almond milk for the flavored shakes and put the plain protein in chicken broth. I tried 6 different brands before finding one that worked for me. Also popsicles count as fluid. I found sugar free big sticks (Stater Bros, Vons) that are a life saver. Best of luck, it gets better.
