Lapband surgery after VSG?
QueenMab89 replied to SusieSouth's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It looks like this study had a very small sample size of only 5 patients. It does not compare the success of those patients against control patients who did not have the lap band placed after VSG. Therefore we can't know if the lap band is what enabled those patients to lose more weight or if it was another factor. -
Any Oregon Sleevers here?
QueenMab89 replied to apositivelife4me's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Congratulations!! I was so nervous about surgery by the day it arrived, but it went so smoothly with Dr. Husain and her team. I got to meet all of the residents and fellows assisting with the surgery and the anesthesiologist made me feel very comfortable. He also gave me some anti-anxiety medications right before wheeling me over to the OR. I don't remember counting down or anything. I remember looking around the OR and then waking up in recovery. I was in pain, but the nurse made sure to get me more pain medication right away. Dr. Husain checked on me again before discharge the following day and one of the residents called to see how I was doing after my first full night at home. Overall, a really good experience for my first ever surgery. -

I am also in Portland and had my surgery (VSG) this week with Dr. Husain at OHSU. It went great! I'm managing the pain well with medication and slowly sipping some soup. Ugh, how terrible! Hopefully the third appeal will do the trick. Insurance companies love to deny approval for things that are very expensive. -
Husband threatens divorce if I have surgery
QueenMab89 replied to Copper5's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It is not worth risking your life to save your marriage. If he is saying this, he does not care about your health. He cares about control. And I am so sorry. I know how painful that is. I encourage you to see a counselor on your own to talk about this for your own sake. A therapist helped me come to the realization that my life would be better as a single person and that I was staying in my abusive marriage out of fear. Divorce was the best decision of my life. I'm sure my ex would not have supported me in this either. -

If I lose a lot of weight during the 6-month pre-op, how do I know if I should still have surgery?
QueenMab89 replied to Fitted T's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A New York Times article came out in 2016 that talked about what happened to the metabolisms of The Biggest Loser contestants after their weight loss. One of the things they found was that their metabolisms slowed significantly, making it harder to maintain weight loss. Reeger Cortell's weight loss surgery podcast had an episode where they talked about that and referred to a concept of a set point for your weight. Your body fights to return to a set point. Apparently WLS helps to lower that set point. Doing some reading on this notion of a set point helped me solidify my decision to have surgery. Without surgery, if I managed to lose all of the weight, it would be very very hard to maintain my weight loss.
