I had the surgery on Feb 22nd of this year, so I am a little over a month out. Mine is long story as I had a Gastric Bypass in 2017 around the same time, and then almost exactly 2 years later, it had to be reversed due to stomach ulcers trying to perforate my stomach. I gained a lot of weight back more then 50% of what I had lost in over the next two years, and had some other issues, so I went back to my surgeon and we decided I could do the modified DS switch. I absolutely love it. I will say there are some interesting things that people mentioned that in MY case I have note experienced, like if I eat something that is fatty like cheese or bacon, that it will send me running to the bathroom where-in I would be treated to an explosion and a smell that only a mother could love and she would question it. This is not true in my case. If anything at times I will need stool softener's to help go to the bathroom on occasion. Nothing like what I experienced post Gastric Bypass though. I am able to eat more at a sitting with the DS then after Gastric Bypass as well. I am being careful though to not over eat. If I had to do it all over again then I would opt for the DS

Hi there, Just wanted to ask those that have had the Duodenal Switch surgery what they were able to eat as healthy snacks after they were freed to move to solid foods?

Yes. I had a long road with my bypass that eventually was reversed and now I am back 2 years later for a different type. When the doctor told me the above he used the example of a weight lifter. He said that PS was the type of protein drink that a weight lifter would drink the night before his workout as it takes that long to digest and be useful to his system. HE then would get up the next day and workout and get the full benefit of the product for his system. He said you don't have that luxury with the bypass as it will pass through leaving you with little to no protein benefit. I was loosing my hair hand over fist and I was spending a fortune on those drinks being the perfect patient and then finally after low potassium and other health issues and a strong talking to myself we found part of the culprit in using PS.

My doctor at one time used premier solution but stopped after further investigation. One of the reasons you should use simply whey protein and have to be careful is the amount of time it takes to digest the specific protein type. When I was a gastric bypass patient as you all well know your body only allows a specific amount of time to digest the food and the it passes through quickly a lot faster then a regular stomach. The whey protein that is no isolate takes to long to digest and therefore it passes through before the body as a chance to benefit from the protein. Therefore you are counting the shake into your daily protein allotment but you are not actually getting it. I learned the hard way about this. Unjury is a great product and the ones I have tried do taste good. Not sure about other products.

Good afternoon, I wanted to see if anyone's heartburn got BETTER after Modified Duodenal Switch. Please and thank you. My physician seems to think it will help me as the food will not be in the stomach for very long.

Hi there all, I was wondering about the extent of hair loss with the DS procedure as I have had a gastric bypass in the past that had to be reversed and with theBypass I lost a lot of hair although taking biotin and all vitamins. My assumption would be that since this is the surgery that seems to have the highest rate of malabsorption it will be worse.

I don't have the sleeve. I had a gastric bypass that had to be reversed so I have normal anatomy now and terrible acid reflux

It is simply a DS that brings up the connection higher on the small intestine so that you can absorb more nutrients

You need to keep high protein shakes handy for when this happens. Often times you can mistake hunger for being thirsty and the protein will no doubt be needed anyway.

Sure you can ask. I had to have it reversed as I would not stop developing ulcers even though I was on three different medications and long story short would not stop losing weight, I lost 200 lbs in a year and a half and another 10 before they could schedule the surgery and reverse. I have quickly gained back 100 and that is good and bad as I lost 50lbs below where I was supposed to have stopped. I was throwing up blood and was just a sick lady. Unfortunately, now I have developed a severe case of GERD and some of the other health issues have came back. My doctor is a wonderful surgeon and thinks that the MDS will help the GERD as you should not be able to have it nor ulcers from this surgery, I hope he is right as every time I eat I get to my stomach and the neds don't seem to be assisting at all.

I wanted to know if after your DS mine will be modified if your acid reflux was helped?

Thank you. I lost almost half my hair with the last surgery. I bought this hair regrowth stuff that was pretty awesome and helped. So if it gets bad I will try that again. Hopefully it will not be horrible, I have had multiple surgeries but the Gastric Bypass was the only one I had hair loss with so I guess I was fortunate with other surgeries Thank you for the input.

Hello Bariatric nation. Well I am super excited to say that my gastric bypass reversal is scheduled for next Wednesday. It took the insurance company only 24 hours to read the doctors notes with test results and ER visit documentation to decide that the procedure is medically necessary. I long for the day I can keep food in and have energy and the stomach ulcers will heal and I can stop taking so much medication. The surgery is on 09/05/2018 I will let everyone know how I feel and the results as time goes on. Thank you to all those that have had such kind words of encouragement.

So just checking one more time to make sure there are no other gastric bypass reversals recently done. My appointment with my surgeon and bariatric Dr. "one in the same" is next Tuesday so I was wanting more information for he and I to discuss if needed.

I took it in Capsule form and it seemed to help but when I came off of it was when I noticed the biggest issues.

Be so very glad they were not bleeding I think I posted pictures of mine somewhere on this site and let me tell you when you are throwing up blood form them and they make the walls of your stomach paper thin it is one of the most painful things I think I have every experienced. Just because they are not challenging the stomach wall now does not mean they wont in the future so keep a close eye on them.

So glad you got checked out. We certainly know our bodies don't we. I am glad you now know what is wrong and hopefully will be on the mend soon. I have been on the meds you mentioned plus two more at the same time and nothing would get rid of mine. Stay with it and take care of you. I know it can be frustrating to be on the liquid diet but you can do this.

Well that's not good. There are so many things that we can bring upon ourselves by not eating correctly, two fast or not chewing enough, or drinking with a meal or to soon after or before. It does bother me when people jump to the conclusion that our suffering might be self inflicted. If you monitor all the above and you know good and well something is wrong then the ER is the safest place to be. Unfortunately, I had a lot of trips that were useless as they did not know how to treat by-pass patients, but when I went in and told them I was so weak that I was falling and dizzy constantly they admitted me and ran the right tests instead of simply doing a stomach scan and pumping me full of radiation. Push the envelope and make sure they are thorough. Don't give up and sure hope your buddy has good success as well.

Well thank goodness, so glad you found someone. I am curious how everything pans out for you. I have heard so many stories like mine of late with people having difficulty with the surgery I have seen it go both ways. Will be thinking about you.

Hope all goes well, and yes do not put off the procedure. I know my poor husband had to take off so much work, and my job was so very kind to me, as I lost a lot of hours at work as well. Much success let all know how it goes.
