Marginal/anastomotic ulcer anyone?
Ronnysgal replied to eudys3's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
That sounds possible for sure. Please take it easy and seek medical attention on your time line as tis surgery can be dangerous and you know your body better then anyone else. I cannot tell you how many ER visits I had and the one where my surgeon told me that I did not need to go was the one where the hospital admitted me and found the major issues. Hopefully all goes well the whole program is certainly an adjustment for sure. -
Marginal/anastomotic ulcer anyone?
Ronnysgal replied to eudys3's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I sure hope you are okay Frustr8. I have gained a little of my weight back after reversal and am so glad but now trying to maintain and stay on top of it. I am feeling a lot better but lately even my reversal has not been able to keep me from nausea and vomiting so I am convinced it is the severe ulcers that are still having their way with me even though on meds. Stay hopeful. keep your chin up. -
So sorry you have not been feeling well. Everyone's body responds differently to this procedure. I was the exception to the rule in many regards. No ansaid usage, chewed until I was tired of chewing, drank constantly, either appropriate shakes for the benefit of the protein as well as getting the liqueds in. Side note: Premier shakes are not the type of shake that by-pass patients should be using. They are not the right kind of protein, as they are slow digesting shakes not Whey protein isolate. In other words when you drink them you are not getting the benefit of the 30 gram of protein. As far as ulcer at the staple site this is a very common result of the surgery and mine were quite severe where I was also throwing up blood. 3 EGD's later and months of protonix and Carafate with no benefit to the ulcers as well as non stop weight loss led to Gastric Bypass reversal.

Teriffying experience blockage of food
Ronnysgal replied to E.S's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello there, I think everyone's surgeons do the post diet differently. I was only on liquids for 2 weeks THANK GOD! Then for about the next 6 weeks was on a soft diet. Greek yogurt, cottage cheese this type of consistency and foods loaded with protein. Remember to chew, chew, and then chew again as this will help and make sure you go slow. I agree you need to make absolutely sure your physician knows of these type of issues that you are having, Hope all goes well! -
Newbie with a couple questions
Ronnysgal replied to JustMeInCleveland's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello Justmeincleveland I did not have a stomach that growled a lot pre-surgery, but after the surgery it was horrible. I have a desk job as a Consumer Loan Officer/Advisor and I cannot tell you how many times I have had to say excuse me as my stomach serenades us. It is simply a fact of life after the surgery for most, as I have several friends who have had the same surgery and experience the same thing. As far as hunger goes for the first several months after surgery I lost the desire to eat and simply looking at T.V. commercials with food in them especially if I had just eaten made me sick at my stomach. As time progressed I did start feeling hungry but I had many issues that eventually led to the surgery being reversed. Hang in there as many have successfully accomplished what you are searching for which is a better quality of life and remember not to seat the small stuff while on your journey. One last thing if you do get hungry remember that sometimes you may not be hungry but dehydrated as you may not be drinking enough so make sure you are getting enough liquid in. -
3 Weeks Post Op. NEED HELP!!
Ronnysgal replied to OhioSparkle's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I think many have went through this situation and as some others have stated you will definitely need to keep your Dr. abreast of the situation. I tried many of the suggestions some offered with minimal improvement, some did not help at all. My issues was not just constipation, but getting the stool out. I had to take stool softeners 3 at a time to assist with the actual bowel movement, and at one time when it was really severe, had to drink some magnesium citrate. Please do not use that route unless you absolutely cannot go. Also beware of taking to many laxative's and stool softeners as the colon can become addicted to such methods and have a rebound affect. I sure hope all the suggestions helped and your are better now. -
I most certainly will. I am finding it difficult to eat again like normal. I catch myself stopping before I finish my meal, simply because I still view my stomach as small. This whole process has been crazy mentally, and when I eat I sit and wait for the nausea to start or the pain and it takes a minute for me to realize I can actually hold the food in, and it is not going to come up. My husband tells me you are okay, go ahead and eat, I love he is so supportive and can tell that I hesitate. The upside is that eating the smaller amounts, as long as I am getting enough nutrition, is okay and I want to make sure that I build on that healthy habit. We went to a fast food place yesterday and I was able to eat 2/3 of the sandwich, a few curly fries, and then just stopped all of a sudden. My husband asked me what was wrong, I said nothing I am simply satisfied and don't feel the need to finish, just because it is there. His response good I am still hungry and will eat it lol. He has had to go on a diet, as he was always finishing my food, and it caught up with him. Hopefully I will continue to maintain although I am actually hoping to gain some back. I lost 40 more lbs than I was supposed to.

Frustr8 thank you very much. I hope all goes well as it has for so many. We started out at about the same weight. I was 362 and then my last weight after the reversal was 162. I am confident you will do fine. If for some reason you need to talk, just let me know. I think I went through the full range with the surgery of the good, the bad and the ugly.

Thank you Orchid just out of my mind with joy over not feeling sick, throwing up or in pain. I had almost forgotten what it felt like to feel healthy.

Thank you MMME

Hello everyone! Well very excited to tell you the surgery went very well. Tomorrow I will be two weeks post op and have been mostly on a liquid diet, but the small things I have eaten such as pudding and oatmeal have stayed down with no problem. I am having no abdominal pain other then the minor irritation from the incisions no worries there. I am actually already feeling the results of having the large intestine back in tact and feeling the nourishment from the food I am ingesting. I am so happy at this point in time. I have now lost exactly 200lbs so I am over 40lbs past where I should have stopped. I obviously do not want to gain all my weight back but do look forward to at least being able to keep things down, in and get the benefit of my food intake whether or not I gain some back or not. I lost from a size 32/34 to currently a size 10. At over 5'9 and large framed that was a lot for the body to take in a year and a half. I will let everyone know how it continues to go, but I do want to say thank you so much for all the kind words of support, and for those that have no other solution for severe bypass issues I am up till this point, proof that there maybe a solution albeit it may have to be a reversal.

20 days post op - what I can eat (pictures)
Ronnysgal replied to E.S's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi there. I am not so sure about the berries being the greatest for you 20 days post op. Just follow what your surgeon has told you. Yes you are only able to eat a very small amount. I remember my first meal was fish and green beans and I was shocked that I was only able to eat three bites and was full. I called a friend who had the procedure prior to myself and she said it was entirely possible that I was indeed full. so I stopped. You will get to know your body as time progress, it will get easier for you. Just make sure that your are getting more protein then your are fruit at this time, and take your multi vitamins for sure. -
Helllo Cmackpmp. Yes they can do them, and they are more common then people realize. Basically they go back in and reattach the stomach which is already attached to the large intestine, but has been sitting dormant in your abdomen. Where they bring the small intestine up to the stomach, is then removed, and you are returned to your natural anatomy. There can be things that go wrong such as an ileus, where the colon does not wake up, and the dormant stomach can have issues readjusting as well, however the reversals have been done for many years with much success. I was unaware of this as well, and simply made a plea to my physician to help me ,as I have been through some many surgeries since the initial procedure, and have had so many complications that the possible problems at this point in time seem minor then continuing to live the way I have been living. There of course is he risk of gaining some weight back but the surgery is simply a tool to lose weight anyway and I as well as anyone else could gain the weight with or without the reversal. I simply have to get my life back. I am certainly glad my medical records and history over the past year and a half were enough to quickly convince my insurance company that it is consider medically necessary and they are paying or the surgery. I hope this answers your questions.

Thank you Frustr8 I appreciate the sentiments and am certainly ready for improved quality of life.

Thanks Pops me as well. Each day it gets closer, I get more and more nervous about being put to sleep. Silly I know but I have a condition called Brady Cardia meaning a very slow heart rate. Before they put me under they have to give me medication to increase my heart rate, as it generally runs in the 47 to 48 range so the anesthesiologist has to be very careful. But they have done well so far.
-
Thank you so much Orchids I really appreciate it. Nervous but super excited to end the madness.
-
Yes that will certainly be the trick. At this time food is not something I really crave, but is a necessity more then anything. Of course that could change and bad habits return if I am not careful.

Just a general FYI. From someone who has always had a rough time with the surgery, and will hopefully soon have her bypass reversed. I have always suffered with fluid staying down and so I have to be extra careful in the choices that I make. I really need electrolytes as most of my many, many visits to the ER, I have needed fluid and have been low on electrolytes. Many may already know this, but today I was shopping at a Casey's "small convenience store" and they have something I have not seen yet. It is Gatorade Zero. I am trying the Glacier Cherry and it is pretty good. Now this is not to be confused with the PowerAde Zero as I have drank them as well, but often times they tend to be very sweet. Just a dropping an FYI if you have not heard of them. Incidentally the bottle says limited time offer. I am thinking maybe they are going to pilot it and see if they can compete with PowerAde for that nitch.
-
Thank you Frustr8 I appreciate all the well wishes. I am certain everything will be ok but there is that little voice in the back of your head that says you thought the same thing going into the bypass in the beginning. I feel however that the benefits will out way the dangers at this point in time. I will try and post and let everyone know how it goes once we get to that point.

W have the G2 just not the G2 Zero

Thanks Jess I will look there as well. I have searched Walmart and they don't have them at least yet.

Thanks for all the tips on drinks. Yes Matt I am going to do the reversal as a last ditch effort to keep myself from going any further down. Actually I think the oldest Bypass reversal that I found dates back to 2005. I have a wonderful surgeon, he has tried everything else to stop the nausea and vomiting, the weight loss as a whole. I am 30lbs past my goal weight already that he suggested. I had the surgery 1 yr and over 4 months ago. Have had to have 2 other surgeries, one to remove scar tissue round the bypass and a bowel resection to try and improve the aforementioned issues. Now I am battling multiple stomach ulcers some of which have been bleeding and they are not able to get the upper hand on them with the most powerful drugs available. It is a risky procedure but one at this time we feel is necessary.

Thank you both very much. I appreciate the idea about the medical power of attorney. I actually do have one, My husband of 31 years is my POA and I also have a Durable power of attorney that state my wishes regarding blood and blood transfusions. Through research I have found it is not a very bloody procedure. I strongly believe in the power of prayer and welcome any and all. It is a terrifying decision to reach having had things go so awry with the bypass but at this time I feel like it is the best solution especially if my surgeon feels it will pout me back on the right track. I am pleased that the surgery was a useful tool to get the weight off even though it did not come off in the normal way. I am hopeful that I will not gain it all back and feel strongly that I will gain some back but having exceeded my goal by almost 30 pounds it will not bother me to gain a little back.
-
Thanks to you both. I will let all know how it goes. I am waiting for my appointment next week and we will see if the insurance will pay for it. My surgeon says there is more then enough history and issue they should pay for it with out appeals.

Thank you for all your help and comments. I have already had the gastric bypass surgery and am 1 year and 4 month out. The medical situation is such that ulcers even with marked treatment are eating away my stomach something I never had post surgery. I am basically malnourished and cannot keep many foods in and pain from stomach is often unbearable. I have already underwent one surgery for scar tissue removal and yet another for a bowel resection. I was only supposed to lose 163 pounds and am now down 190 and still losing. It takes great effort on my part to try and find something that will stay down and have protein in it to get me to my allotted amount. I am living on 2 different ulcer medications and have had 3 EGD's months apart and each time get bad news as they are multiplying even while taking the top medications. My Doctor is one of the foremost leading experts in the industry and he is the one that has brought up the reversal and says they can be done quite easily but feels I will gain my weight back. I am so unconcerned about that at this time and just want to feel alive and healthy again as it has been a struggle since month 2 with the health issues. Multiple Stomach scans, chest x-rays, lab work on the note my veins are so shot from all the IV's from the potassium infusions that I have had to take. There simply comes a time when you are done and have to think of your long term health. Thanks again for your comments.
