Water? Nope. Applesauce? Nope. Jell-o? Nope. Help!!
kaynga posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So i had my gastric sleeve on 3/14, and even though it's barely been over a day, I'm really anxious at how little food and liquid I can take it. I've nearly vomited twice (heaved and coughed, but nothing came out), and my nausea when i drink anything is overwhelming. I've also not been able to take more then 3-4 small bites of any food I've been given. I read somewhere that lack of protein makes you more nauseated, so I had as much of a protein shake as I could handle and it seems like it helped a bit. Anyway, did everyone else go through something similar? I'm scared something is wrong. -

Thanks for the advice Fluffychix! It's probably better to get incomplete protein than not much at all, (which is the case for me right now except for my protein shakes) so I'll still give it a go along with other things day by day to see what I can tolerate more. I think I've been a bit too tunnel vision about this stage. Even if I can't hit all my goals (except for hydration; I'm keeping that up no matter what), it's only for two weeks, and it's not like my health is going to deteriorate completely if I can't take in more than an oz of full liquid per meal. I'll just stick to doing my best to stay hydrated and take my vitamins and I'll definitely be able to make up for it when I move on to the next stage. The nausea is already much better today compared to the last two days, so things are looking up. -

That looks amazing; thank you so much. I'll be getting some as soon as possible! -

I haven't tried broth yet because I generally really dislike plain broth, and the broth we have at home doesn't have the kind of protein I'd like. Do you remember the brand name of the broth you got from walmart? Because i'll absolutely try that. -

So far day 1 was all Jell-o and day 2 was all (unsweetened) applesauce, and both had the same reaction - four bites or so and I was too nauseated to continue. That said, I'm able to drink much more water today than I have been able to since surgery, so I'm hoping I can keep down an oz or two. I do have ondanesetron for nausea, but I can only take it once every 8 hours and it seems to wear off after 4. The nurses couldn't offer a solution to that other than to just bear with it. -

Sorry for the confusion; in my mind, "applesauce" and "jell-o" are still "foods", even though I know they're full/clear liquids. I'm definitely not trying to eat anything solid or semi-solid. -

That's exactly what mine recommends. But even 2oz of full liquids is too much for me. I'm hoping it'll calm down within the next few days. -

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm relieved I'm not the only one who had this issue. Looking back at my workbook I got from my dietician, it seemed like from day 2 on they expected me to drink 64 oz (including two premier shakes), then eat 2 oz 3 times a day right away. I can't even eat half that. I'll focus on getting the water in as much as possible though. -
What do you wish that you did before your sugery?
kaynga posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm about a week away from my gastric sleeve surgery (3/14/2018). I've taken a fair amount of before pictures, I measured my waist, hips, arms, thighs, and neck so I can use that to track if I'm losing when the scale inevitably plateaus, and I think I have the essentials packed for surgery (gas-x, biotene, baby spoons, all my vitamins for the first month, water bottle). I was curious about to those who have been through it - what do you wish you had done before surgery to either make it easier, to make your progress more visible, or just simple quality of life things? -

So I'm going on 3 days of my pre-op diet, and I keep having spells where I get chills and intense nausea. Does anyone have advice? My diet is premier protein for breakfast, lunch, and for dinner 6 oz of lean meat and nonstatch veggies. I've also been instructed not to take vitamins. (I feel like such a wimp for being like this only 3 days out. I'm definitely not giving up, I'm just looking for ways to improve the situation)

I think it was like keto flu. Good news is after 3 days it's stopped. Thank you for your advice everyone!! It helped a lot. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using BariatricPal mobile app

Surgery approved, Pre-Op diet starts Wednesday
kaynga posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was incredibly fortunate and my insurance approved me within four days, and my surgery (sleeve) was scheduled for March 14th due scheduling issues. I'm looking forward to it and I'm so grateful that I got this far. But... My pre-op diet is two weeks of protein shakes for breakfast and lunch, and for dinner 3 oz of lean meat and veggies. I'm really scared I might mess it up somehow, or the cravings are going to make me constantly hangry(hungry/angry) or leave me with no energy. Does anyone have suggestions for the best way to get through this part? I know this is the start of the Real Hard Work, and I'm ready to take it on. I'm just nervous and looking for advice/reassurance. SW: 340 CW: 306 GW1: 180 Surgery date: 3/14 -

I was also curious how many people had to stop taking their daily meds for the pre-op diet. I take anti-depressants and occasional painkillers (not ibuprofen) for back pain, so I was wondering if either of those will be nixed as well. -
So my Insurance required me to have three months of consecutive weight loss and tomorrow is my final weigh-in. After that my understanding is that they will have 30 to 45 days to approve everything. In everyone else's experience, how long was it between Insurance approval and surgery being scheduled? I'm speaking as someone from the United States. My insurance is through Aetna and my surgery is being done by Saint Francis. I've lost weight every month, but I'm so afraid of being denied regardless. Haha, I didn't even realize since I'm so used to it as a hospital name. It's St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis. I guess we'll both be blessed at least. I wish you the best on your surgery as well!!
