    Today is the day!

As I get closer to my surgery date, I am reading more about others' recoveries. I am glad you are doing so well. It gives me hope
  2. I am glad that everyone has future plans! I read some of them and thought "Yes! I want to do that as well." My ultimate would be to learn how to properly surf in the ocean and be successful at it. Maybe somewhere like Hawaii or Australia. I would worry about sharks though. And the hubby wants me to go see "The Meg."
  3. I understand completely. The last trip my husband and I went on was to Vegas. I really had no desire to go because I it was two weeks before my total hip replacement so I couldn't take my beloved Aleeve. I was achy all the time, no matter what position - standing, sitting on chairs, sitting on stools, walking, even lying down. When I got on the plane to come home, I thought to myself, "This is the last time I will have to stress out about where I sit and who I am next to." I never want to feel this bad ever again. Now that I have recovered from that surgery, the rest of my body is letting me know that I am not out of the woods yet. I am counting on WLS to help with my osteoarthritis in my left hip, knees and ankles, along with the plantar faciitis in my right heel. I am looking forward to having more energy to daily chores like cleaning my house, and gardening again. I am also looking forward to enjoying my life again with my husband. We both want to travel. I have been putting off a trip to Asia because I dread how small the seats will be. After I lose the excess weight, look out world! The possibilities are endless - like white water rafting in Scotland, and Zip lining in Costa Rica....

    September bypass buddies??

Other than gathering post-op things, I have been anxious. I was suppose to have surgery today but the doctor's office called to change it, so now I have to wait 9 more days. I sometimes feel like this entire spring and summer has been me waiting for hip surgery and now wls so I can move again without being in pain. I did get good news that my prescription insurance will cover the cost of bariatric vitamins so I set things up for my first delivery. I know that I need to appreciate this waiting period so I don't take things for granted when I can move with out pain. As my grandma always said, "This too shall pass..." September bypass buddies??

How's everyone doing? I just came back from a romantic 2 night hotel stay where we conducted food funerals at all of our favorite restaurants. I realize I will be able to find appropriate things after surgery but it was good to get it out if my system. I have notice that now I am listening to my therapist that I am starting to view food differently. Food does not equal love nor can someone guilt me into eating something I don't want. While I only have a one day pre-op diet of clear liquids, I will be using this time to stop drinking all caffeine and Pop. I am already off of Aleeve and taking Tylenol for the osteoarthritis. I am also trying to be prepared for after surgery with liquids. Sent from my XT1650 using BariatricPal mobile app

    September bypass buddies??

I feel the same mc2017! My surgery was changed from August 27th to September 5th because of the OR getting some changes. I will be having mine with Dr. Taylor at Barix Clinics of Michigan in Ypsilanti. This has been a long process that started in January 2018 because I had stage 4 osteoarthritis in my right hip. I have since had a total hip replacement but my left hip has stage 2 osteoarthritis. At 48, I am too young to feel this damn old. My orthopedic surgeon assures me that losing the extra weight will get me back to my dancing days with the Hubby. Thankfully, Hubby understands that I am doing this to get back to my old self and to be able to keep up with him.

    Average Length of Pre-Op Diet?

I only have to do one day of clear liquids. My husband has plan a romantic weekend for us and I imagine I will have a few food funerals. I will then be back to no caffeine, no carbonated drinks, and eating to lose more weight before surgery, which is Sept 5th.

    August surgery ppl

I am scheduled to have gastric bypass on August 27th. I will know more after I go for my presurgical appointment on Monday. I am amazed at how fast this happened after I submitted my 6th month doctor monitored diet paperwork to BCN. Sent from my XT1650 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Surgery, “it’s the easy way.”

So in the last 5 months I have learned a few more things. In the beginning of March my hip injection only lasted a week so my Ortho said I would need to have a total hip replacement ASAP ( which was scheduled on May 29th, lol) He was willing to do the surgery because he knew I was still planning to go through WLS. The last two weeks were horrible - not allowed to take Aleeve since it is a blood thinner and Tylenol doesn't really work for me. I had my fair share of shots of Scotch just so I could fall asleep. When I woke up in the recovery room, the hip pain was gone. Yes I had muscle soreness (Anterior approach so they stretch the muscles in the front instead of cutting them in the back). Recovery was a breeze except that I gained some weight. Through all this I am still seeing my primary physician so my insurance will approve RNY. He went from being really leary and unhappy with my choice to total understanding about WLS. He has not had much experience with this and of course wanted to refer me to his hospital's bariatric surgeon. While I was very happy with them for my hip, I wanted a surgeon who only does bariatric and will be around for long term aftercare. My primary is now on board with that choice as well so that has been a wonderful improvement. As for my Mom, I don't talk with her about bariatric surgery. There is no discussion with her after she makes up her mind. It is her way or your wrong. My Aunt (her sister) and I have a great relationship and she also knows the pains of trying to lose weight (which my mother never dealt with). After a long discussion on my reasoning and choices, my Aunt is all for it. I had Stage 4 osteoarthritis in my right hip which is now replaced but the post x-ray showed Stage 2 in my left hip. I can expect osteoarthritis in the rest of my joints as well. I explained that in order to preserve my new joint and to help the rest, I need to lose some serious weight fast. WLS will be the tool that will jump start my new lifestyle of healthy non-processed food and exercise. What is really amazing to me is all of the support that I receive from work. Most are men who hear that I will be out on Medical sometime around September so I can have WLS done. The small amount of women that I work with have already had the surgery or understand why without me spelling out my reasons.

    Surgery, “it’s the easy way.”

Great article Creekimp13! I hate that sometimes I still feel like that little girl who needs her Mommy's permission even though I go my own way. I know she will always have something negative to say when it comes to my weight. However, I am doing this for me. I just read your comment about 75% of bariatric patients end up divorced. That is scary. I am also doing this so I can get a hip replaced so I can keep traveling with my husband. He is also following a high protein, low carb diet because it helps him feel better, especially with his joints. We both are in our 40's but feel like we are in our 80's! That is going to change for the better.

Open Letter To All Who Go For Initial Doc Visit and ...

This made me smile. I was very irritated that I have to do the 6 month physician approved diet. One of the main reasons, I am doing this is because I need a total hip replacement now. I have been through 6 months of shots in the hip while i try to lose weight as I trained to walk the 60 mile SGK 3 day. I understand that this is normal for my insurance to request this but is it better for my overall health when some days I am in pain just sitting? I will suck it up and do it but you can't make me like it! Who am I kidding? I am going to have to like it because this will be my new lifestyle. On the positive side, I will use this 6 months to wean myself off of diet mt. dew and coffee. As Grandma always said, "This too shall pass and it will make you stronger."

I had a similar discussion with my Mom. I purposely waited to tell her over the phone so if it went bad, I could hang up. It wasn't as bad as I thought but it still hurts. I wanted to say "after dieting on and off for 37 years your way and things not working, maybe this would be the tool that does work. Can't you be supportive - even if you have to be silent to do so? Thank God my husband keeps my perspective on track and makes me laugh during these stressful situations.
