  1. My dietician told me all I would "be able to eat" would be 1/4 cup and at 3 months out I will only be able to eat 1/2 cup at most. That has not been my experience, and my dietician was surprised at my 5 week appointment that I was able to eat much more than that. I feel like so much of the literature focuses on "eat until you feel that fullness" but never addresses what to do if you eat your 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup and still feel hungry or don't feel any restriction/fullness/etc. It's been stressful and a frustration. I'm annoyed that I don't have the restriction I thought I was going to have. I understand that some things are going to be more slider food than others, but it seems like I'm able to have much more than I was led to expect to be able to have at this stage, and that I'm feeling actual, legitimate hunger after eating only 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup (not just head hunger) which surprises me as well. I know that surgery doesn't make hunger go away, but I thought it would make it so less food would curb hunger/be filling. Obviously I'm still eating less than I was before, but I've had a similar experience as OP and while trying to still eat closer to 1/2 cup it's really hard to do that when there's no feeling of restriction/fullness.
  2. How have the first few weeks been going for others? I’ve been working on trying to find my rhythm of what I’m eating when. I did better with planning ahead the first week than I did this last week, so I’m hoping to recommit on that front with some meal prep tomorrow! My office mates always have SO much candy around “to share” and there have been so much free food in the staff room that I’ve definitely caved at least a few times. I’m hoping that doing more advance planning with what I’m bringing will make it easier for me to avoid all the bagels/candy/pizza/etc. that’s been around... Energy-wise I can’t tell whether the afternoons have felt more sluggish because of surgery or just because I’m not doing caffeine anymore. I’m hoping it’s just about re-adjusting to school day and that I’ll regain my stamina soon!!
  3. Hello! I thought I’d start a thread for fellow teachers since most of us have either just started the school year or are about to! I feel like there are experiences/questions/concerns/etc. specific to the teacher+WLS experience and that it might be nice to have a thread to use to share/ask/discuss/etc! My workshop week starts on Monday, then the first day of school is the day after Labor Day - also the day I get to return to solid foods! What are you most excited about with back to school? What are you most nervous about? What advice do you have for others or advice would you like from others?
  4. I had bypass on 7/30. I lost about 13 lbs on the preop diet, and now I’m a total of 36.3 down including that. So that means I’ve lost about 23 lbs since surgery which was a month and a half ago, and when I think about it that way I feel fairly good about it. BUT when I think about it in terms of having lost 5 lbs since 8/20, I feel a lot crappier about it AND worried that 1lb per week is all I can expect.
  5. I stalled for 2.5 weeks, finally lost three pounds, then for the last week or two have been gaining and losing the same 2-3 lbs. I’m only 2.6 pounds down since September 1. I’m really hoping the loss starts picking up sometime soon, I was expecting for more than an average of 1.3 lbs per week... 😩😫😩😫

What did you tell people at work?

I made one a few weeks ago before I started back up at school, maybe I’ll see if I can revive it! I haven’t told anyone at work and that’s been working fine so far. I’ve mentioned some dietary restrictions but besides that I haven’t shared. I’m a private person and don’t broadcast my personal health decisions, not because I’m ashamed of them but because they’re my own personal decisions.
  7. I’m six weeks post-op and 23.7 lbs down since surgery (36.6 lbs including two week pre-op diet). First month I lost 20.1 pounds from 7/30-8/31, and I’ve lost only 3.6 since. I had a bit of an extended plateau that maybe just ended (🤞🤞) and I’m hoping my rate of loss will increase again, we’ll see! I’d love to be doing a bit more than 2lbs each week since I’m still only a month and a half out, but I don’t know if that’s realistic! I had gastric bypass.
  8. I’ve heard this too, but don’t know whether it’s legit. I’ll talk to my doctor sister and see what she says :)

    Then and Now

Gorgeous in both pictures, but wow what a difference! Congratulations!
  10. I did that today too/ate some things I shouldn’t. I’m feeling crappy and nauseous and headachey now, not the best feelings to be having because I was finally going to go to the gym for my first time in several months/first time since surgery! Hoping I can shake it off in the next hour or two so I can still make it...

    Secret sleevers?

My husband knows, obviously, and I told my parents, and sisters though I almost didn’t even tell them. I have one friend that I’ve told, other than that it’s not known. I’m private in general and especially have no interest in broadcasting this very personal decision.

    30 second elevator interview

I'm a 31 year old nerd who loves to travel and go on adventures with her husband, do crossword puzzles, read books, and play boardgames. My job is teaching kids who are in mental health partial hospitalization program so they don't get behind on school credits while they're in treatment. It's my 11th year teaching and my 2nd year in the position and sometimes I still can't believe how perfect this new job is for me. I also have a wonderful 11 year old puppy. I'm bad at being brief, I guess! To make up for it I'm including a puppy picture

    Post op weightloss

I had a pretty similar first few weeks as you did! I lost 20 pounds in my first three weeks and then stalled for the next 2-3 (by stall I mean MAYBE losing 2 pounds over the course of three weeks). I'm hoping my stall breaks pretty soon and in the meantime I'm trying to refocus on the non-scale changes I'm noticing AND recommitting to eating on plan and moving more!
  14. Thank you and @tracy1978 for your kind words!! I’m still hoping I can avoid doing the chips again, but I appreciate you helping me get out of my self-shaming, always critical, beat myself up reflexes. The 36lbs includes pre-op so it’s in 8 weeks which I still feel great about, especially because my multi-week stall is showing signs of being done (KNOCK ON WOOD!)
  15. I got Chipotle last night - turns out their chips are a MAJOR slider for me, didn't feel the restriction at all with them. At least I realized that fairly quickly and gave the bag of chips to my husband...after I'd eaten about half of them :/ I got a burrito bowl with no rice and double chicken, double black beans, and double fajita veggies. I barely made a dent in it for my lunch. Went back and made a tiny dent in it for dinner, and 80% of it is still in the fridge. I'm torn between "well, this isn't TOO bad" because I made sure that there was a lot of protein and lower carbs and on the other hand thinking about the amount of fat from the cooking oils and from the cheese and sour cream and guac makes me feel completely ashamed that I had any of it. I'm six weeks post-op tomorrow, so this was my first time 'eating out' and my first time eating anything remotely like this. I'm hoping I can avoid eating similarly for at least another six weeks but...it was REALLY good!

Have a chuckle at my expense

I was also expecting to be VERY hangry and whiny and MEAN, especially since I was also weaning off a lifelong caffeine habit...BUT I actually wasn't bad! I was a little overly emotional a couple times, and definitely upset about cravings, but I was much more even-keeled than I had expected!
  17. Aw honey, I came home from surgery 9lb heavier due to swelling and IV fluids! Took almost two weeks to just loose that and be back to square 1! Talk about frustrating!!! Hang in there, this is for life. Slower loss usually is more permanent! With my sleeve I was the Haire. I lost fast and regained fast while the turtles slowly outlost me and kept it off! Yeah, I’m excited about losing about 20lbs in five/six weeks, just wish I’d see some forward movement again!
  18. I hope so, I’m just feeling pretty demoralized since I’ve only lost 1-2 lbs in the last three weeks. Trying to take deep breaths and just keep doing what I’m supposed to...
  19. I had RNY. I have been having softer foods a lot of the time still, so that might explain part of it. Had chicken breast and veggies for dinner tonight and that made me feel full faster so I’m crossing fingers!
  20. I’m over two weeks into my stall and I’m 20lbs down since surgery at almost six weeks out. I’m scared and nervous that this isn’t going to work for me, and when I met with my NUT the other day she was really surprised at the lack of restriction I’ve been describing, so that made me feel even more stressed out. Hoping this stall breaks soon because it’s messing with my head!!

    3 week stall

My three week stall has lasted about 2.5 weeks so far, not breaking yet. This is from my NUT: Plateaus are common even after weight loss surgery and they often will happen at points where your body has wanted to stall in the past. In the first 6 months after surgery, they are usually 1-3 weeks in length. They can last even longer than that after 6 months post-op. Have faith that you are on track! Focus on how clothes are fitting and if you are losing inches more than pounds. Know that stress and poor sleep can also influence the scale in addition to diet and exercise.
  22. I'm not in NYC anymore (though I did grow up there), but today was my first day too. It was BUSY and NON-STOP, and of course I have class tonight so I can't even fully decompress and relax for day two! I DID pack a great lunch though that I chipped away at over the course of the day - hard boiled egg, two roll ups with two very thin turkey slices and a slice of provolone each, a wasa cracker, and grapes. It was a great mix of things and good things to be able to sneak a bite here and there since I didn't really have time for lunch today! Congrats on the new school, and supportive admin makes a HUGE difference!!
  23. Love the Millie's sipping broths, even though I'm post op back to solids!!
