5k Run! 6 months post op!

I am also using a Couch to 5K Active App. Friday I completed week 5 day 3 and it was a 5 min warm up, 20 min jog, and 5 Min cool down. That is the longest I have jogged since high school. Today I start Week 6 and hope to be ready for my local Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning which I signed up for. My goal is to be able to jog the whole thing under 45 minutes. These posts are inspiring and led me to take this on.

    Show me your Vitamins

I use this one a day https://www.amazon.com/Bariatric-Multivitamin-Capsule-Gastric-Surgery/dp/B00JREK09G Also 2 Viactiv chews through out the day. My 6 month labs came back great and my doctor was impressed with the vitamins. It is a pill so make sure you can handle it, i know some people can't.

    Help, I'm hungry AGAIN!

They could be if overeaten. Even healthy foods can be over consumed. Here are some snacks Intakt Snacks Cheese Lover from BP vs Lays Classic. The BP snacks are less carbs overall and more protein but the package (2 servings) is the same as one small bag of chips 28g, as for calories the chips are 10 calories less than the whole Intakt Bag. Not saying I recommend the Lays over the Intakt snack. I suggest you food log everything you consume. Logging holds me accountable for my food intake and I can review what is working and what I need to take out, and I log everything from a bite of cheesecake to my protein shakes and salads including dressing and condiments. I have been logging for over a year now and am 8 months out of surgery today. Good luck.

  5. Sugar free Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. Just be careful with sugar alcohols.
  6. I wasn't sure how it was going to go. But I said no candy for me and I stuck to it. My son brought back a great haul and was offered a Reeses cup (my favorite, he did not know I was not having any) and I told him no thanks. I felt proud for making it through the season candy free. The rest of the Holidays have nothing on me.

    I don't think I'm ready ):

I had considered sleeve 8 years ago. Took the program and decided to not to have the surgery. I realized 2 truths between then and now: I should have had surgery then, seeing the benefit of it now, except; I'm glad I didn't because mentally and maturity wise I was not ready for some of the changes as you have stated in the first post You need to really be committed to yourself. It's hard to change and let go. Don't do it until you come to terms with you and are ready. Good luck!

    Beards

I actually shaved my beard 3 months after WLS. But it grows back with a vengeance now. I'm thinking of letting it grow back soon. No hair loss as well.

What do you eat for lunch?

in a pinch i have these on hand as well very good and fulfilling, i know its not the best but they work. Usually it'll be left overs from the night before. I also have these lipton cup of soup packs that are 60 calories in case i don't have something on me or change my mind with lunch, just watch the sodium. I also have the $1 pot pies from the market. they are high calorie but what i do is eat the inside and leave the crust. again these are for times i ran out the door and need a little something at work.
  10. This has been my biggest hurdle. Before surgery I would drink about 3-4 glasses of liquid with a meal. I started bringing it down prior to surgery. I recently had water the other day and it over filled me and made me feel sick. What I have been told in my pre surgery classes and post surgery support group that liquid can stretch the sleeve making more room for food.

    Anyone try Baritrack Vitamins

I use ProCare Health Bariatric Multi every morning. Not only is the cost great but easy to go down if you can handle swallowing a pill. It is a one a day and my numbers came back great at my 6 month checkup, using it since month 4. It is also available as a 30 day supply for less, I did that at first to try them out. I then take a chew-able calcium later in the day.

    Post Op food

When trying new foods try one at a time. For example the egg and Greek yogurt. Try the yogurt on its own then the egg, that way if one gives you a problem you'll know which it is. My surgery was performed by Kaiser, here is the link to the Bariatric teams website with info on diet, meal plans and shopping lists and other useful help Kaiser Bariatric After Surgery Page. Hope this helps.

    7 month stall (need advice)

Plateaus happen for us. Read up on this Getting past the Plateau so you can better understand them. You may very well be inducing the plateau. I had a 5 week stall 3 months ago. @FancyChristine15 is right. My nutritionist had me go from 1000 cal to 12-1400 a day because the amount of exercise I was doing. She said that the body starts to go into starvation mode because your calorie intake is way less than your output and the body is trying to balance itself. She had me add healthy fats such as nuts or all natural peanut/almond butter for a bit more calories without the amount being to much for my sleeve. Also try some whole grains in your diet. Don't go overboard but a single slice of bread with a bit of nut butter of your choice prior to a work out will help out alot and you will burn through the carbs during the workout. Also if you are doing the same workout routine try changing it up. Congrats @Fhroa you are doing great, keep it up.
  15. Be careful with WW after surgery. I just ran an online points calculator to find out my daily points intake. It gave me 40 points to start. One point equal out to about 50 calories. Based on 40 points x 50 = 2000 calories a day which is way more than my program says i should intake. That much food maybe to much for a modified stomach. I food log everything I eat to to help keep me accountable. Maybe reach out to your surgery team if they offer meetings. My insurance offers a post surgery group weekly. I go and use the scale there for my weekly weigh in for my tracking and then hang out for the meeting. We have members from just having had surgery to one that is 8 years out. Our meetings are led with a behaviorist and nutritionist who alternate weekly. Best thing is you recognize change needs to happen, so make it happen. 😊

    The TERRIBLE 250’s!

@Seahawks Fan just keep working at it. I was a month and a half in the 250s. If you need to break out of a stall there are 2 ways. Introduce more exercise (intensive cardio workouts) or shift calories to your body. I take it your hitting the gym as you mentioned muscle mass increase, maybe add a little more cardio. Our bodies like to regulate themselves, so by introducing a change you can usually break out of a plateau. Here is a good article explaining it the plateau, https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/weight-loss-plateau/art-20044615 ,talk to your team regarding the calories (article says to drop them, which we usually can't as we are already low). I spoke to my nutritionist and she actually is the one who recommend more calories to break out. I was only at about 1000 calories a day and when I told her my workouts she encouraged me to move to at least 1200-1400 daily. I lift 3-4 times a week and alternate jogging every day in between on top of my daily walk with the dog of 1.5 miles. So some days I get in 3-4 miles with the jog and walk. She said that my body was basically going into starvation mode and not letting go of weight because if my exercise routine. I try to keep my calories at about 1300 a day and has been working for me the last 2 months. Keep up the great work.

    Any March 2018 Sleevers?

Congrats to all the fellow March Sleevers. I'm doing good having lost 70 pounds since surgery, 97 lbs from when I started my pre-Op program one year ago. I go to the gym every other day and walk/jog daily, currently building up to my first 5K run for Thanksgiving. Looking forward to the one year mark to see where I will be at.

    Sugar free candy

I personally have no issues with the sugar alcohol in popsicles, but when its in chocolate not a good comboe. Like everyone posted above just watch out for sugar alcohols, we all react differently, my wife does not do well with more than a piece or two. I might recommend trying new products at home just in case.

  20. I go to a post surgery group and luckily have a few veterans in the group, which has been helpful for me for future insight. One member had the VSG done 7 years ago. He said he still gets restriction. he has maintained close to goal weight. He is truly an inspiration to me.

Im exhausted 11 days post-op need advice

It's normal so early on to feel exhausted because of the low calorie intake. Based on your current meals of 3 shakes and a yogurt, you're at about 700 calories which is truly not enough for the human body to function like normal. I had 2 1/2 weeks off and got back to work, I was dead tired by the end of the work day, and I have a office job (wish i could have taken more time off). When I moved to Pureed foods it helped and brought in a few more calories and started adapting. It also takes a few weeks for your body to adjust to the lower intake. Hang in there.

I tried a diet coke today...

We had a mindful eating presentation during my pre-op classes. It was done with a hershey's kiss and it was mind boggling how one small kiss would change my outlook on eating.
