    Homemade broths

My surgeon’s 2 week liquid pre-op diet is a little stricter than others I read on this and other sites. Optifast shakes (and possibly bars) and broths only. And that’s it. Hopefully black coffee and unsweetened tea will also be okay, but I guess I’ll see. Canned broths are yuck, am I right?! And usually come with more sodium than necessary. So in the next 4 months until my surgery I’m going to be making several stocks / broths in my pressure cooker. This weekend I grabbed a frozen turkey and cooked it, then took the carcass and made turkey broth to freeze. Also planning to put bone in beef roasts on the menu and rotisserie chickens for stocks as well. I can’t say I’m looking forward to the broth filled weeks but this will certainly make it more palatable!

    Easter candy!

My kids got nuts in their plastic eggs this year (Easter Bunny pranked them for April Fools)

    What's Your Bougie Size?

It’s a long solid tube they put down your esophagus and into the stomach to staple against as a way to get the size of your sleeve accurate.

    Over eating before surgery

You definitely aren’t alone! I have the same problem. I feel like during the week I have other things to distract me from food but on the weekends i feel like I’m stalking my kitchen like an ever hungry beast wanting to devour whatever I can find!

    Surgery tomorrow

ABSOLUTELY! Let them know you suffer from motion sickness and they will premedicate you to make sure you don’t get sick! Patients that wake up vomiting are a huge aspiration risk and they don’t want that.

    Help! Severe constipation

I would try a fleets enema or glycerin suppository to soften the stool. Once it gets that close to coming out and is hard and unable to move nothing you take orally will help.

    Not losing weight

You haven’t “officially” stopped losing weight! Sounds like you’re hitting the 3 week stall everyone talks about. Keep doing what you’re supposed to be doing and don’t let the scale stress you!
  8. I haven’t told my kids yet. I wish I had a successful talk about it well behind me and could give you solid advice. The only thing I can think to suggest is to stop thinking of it as giving up. You’re giving yourself a tool to succeed. Tell them you want to be able to do physical activities with them some day that you can’t now. Tell them you want to not only be there at their weddings someday but that you want to be able to walk proudly down the aisle and kick it on the dance floor!
  9. Man I hope my program allows at 1-2 weeks, my surgery will be July and I’d love to be able to go to the pool during my time off work.
  10. Access your profile on the full website (you won’t be able to do it on your mobile app) If you click on the little down arrow just to the right of your user name ‘My Tickers’ is found in the drop down box. Then you should be able to create your ticker/tracker

    Sleeve or Bypass with GERD?

I think your mom is absolutely right! Keep doing research to reassure yourself that you’re safe getting the bypass. Yes the sleeve is growing in popularity but that doesn’t mean that bypass still isn’t a great procedure with minimal complications.

    Sleeve or Bypass with GERD?

I'm planning on getting sleeved but if my EGD indicts at all that I have asymptomatic GERD then I'll probably switch to bypass. I do get heartburn from juices, soda and strong coffee and when it flares up its bad enough I know its nothing I'd like to deal with day in and day out.

    Pre-op diet issues

Not sure what is in Premier Protien - but if it doesn't have sugar you could be detoxing from that? Sugar detox is brutal: headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, nausea, cravings.

    RN twelve hour shifts

So tell us... how DO healthcare providers eat and drink while on shift? Here's my answer: sometimes the DONT. We know we're running around dehydrated and sometimes have to shove whatever food we can in the short amount of time we can find. If at least 3 nurses have commented on this thread that its a concern because we see the reality of our jobs and know that all day "Sip Sip Sip" isn't a luxury that we have THEN ITS A VALID CONCERN. Look at the suggestions other nurses have given: get it in on your commute in. They know. But hey, thanks for your "helpful" comment.

    RN twelve hour shifts

Same boat. I’m a surgery nurse and so am not allowed beverages in the OR! I was thinking of getting a smallish flask or a collapsible cup to keep in my pocket. My surgeon wants me off for 3 weeks.
  16. Run a 5k. Like actually RUN it. And climb one of those indoor rock walls.
  17. Sounds like he has lots of experience then! Good luck!

    Hello everyone!

Just 6 months of visits to my PCP. My insurance and surgeon doesn’t require any specific program or visits to a nutritionist. They just want a 5% weight reduction.

    Hello everyone!

I’m looking at a potential July surgery date as well! Welcome!
  20. This intrigues me (professionally, as a nurse) and I’m interested in learning more about it. Keep in mind as a new procedure there may not be a lot of information out there about the complications. Once upon a time the VGS was brand new and it’s becoming more and more popular due to the success rates. Once upon a time the Lap Band was brand new, and now many surgeons refuse to place them. You have to consider whether doing something brand new for the short term advantages of outpatient, less incisions, no liquid diet would outweigh any potential long term complications that are an unknown. Maybe the surgeons office has a support group where you can meet previous patients of his?
  21. I feel that way too! And from the sound of things everyone experiences something different. I really hope my experience is like Creekimps and I won’t be drawn to those comfort foods after surgery. If there is some way of tricking the stomach into not wanting sweets afterward I’d sure like to know about it!

What's Your Goal For The Week?

I’ve been doing a not so strict slimfast type plan. Shakes for breakfast and lunch with fruit or veggies and then the evening meal with my family. If I get to month 4 or 5 and am not losing the required weight I need to then I’ll get stricter.

    my mistake

No no, I wouldn’t do that. I’m on daily looking to learn about people’s experiences, successes, and set backs. I figure it’s the best way to expect what my journey might look like.

    my mistake

I AM new actually. I wasn’t trying to be mean, I was trying to be funny. SO SORRY I TRIED.
