    Severe left shoulder pain

Just to close the loop in case it helps someone in the future... Dr said it was extremely common and referred pain from the hernia repair. One key thing seemed to be that it was clearly worse or better based on eating or drinking. It's much better now and just mildly sore. Glad I saw the dr though!
  2. I am having the same issue, trying to get more fiber, but so far I haven't figured it out. I do get 64-70 oz of liquid a day

    Nervous about outpatient VSG!

You may need a different dose or med. let the doctors and nurses know. I had that issue and they had to double then triple the dose (some people are naturally more resistant they said). You definitely shouldn't be in terrible pain, it can lead to other issues and slow healing.

What couldn't you be without now?

Protein shakes and Gatorade G2 (currently living on those two things). I also am finding that a drinking bottle or similar with a know quantity or measurements is helpful. I fill up an empty g2 bottle (20 oz) and at the start of the day I have everything I need to drink already portioned out so I can keep track and know how much is left before I hit my hydration goal.

    Buddies Group - Surgery Dec 4 to 15, 2017

I tried about 12 days out (purée) and it did not go well. I'm having lots of luck with Greek yogurt or puréed lentil soup and vegetable beef soup, good flavor and it's very liquid. I'll try tuna again later this week, I knew after one tiny bite it was a no go last time.

    Holding Myself Accountable

Hang in there, I struggled some with the pre op diet as well. The good news is it seems easier post surgery, that extreme hunger feeling doesn't happen like before. A binge also isn't as bad because you just physically can't eat as much and shoving food in has immediate and painful consequences. Great job being accountable, don't let a little slip become a big slide.

    Psychiatrist Appointment

Mine was also very informal, probably 20-30 mins. There were questions about weight loss history and home support, but 99% of the time was spent talking about how to set some exercise goals that were achievable.

    Non Scale Victories

Recent (12/12), but down 30 though not focusing on it. Pants are falling off. I've got a lot of clothes that didn't fit in my closet and now they do so I've suddenly got a wide selection of clothes. I've noticed a bit less back pain too

    Kidney stones

I've had them before, usually they prescribe flomax and pain killers. Not a lot of fun. If you can catch it they can analyze it and tell you what type it is, which can help you avoid it in the future.

    Nervous about outpatient VSG!

I definitely wouldn't have done well as an outpatient, I needed. The biggest issue had was swallowing oral pain meds due to the hiatal hernia fix, so if you're not getting that it might be much easier. Just make sure you can take them before they send you home, otherwise things can escalate quickly (I went home, couldn't take pain meds and had other issues due to that land me back in the hospital the next morning.

    Severe left shoulder pain

Thanks everyone. I reverted my diet to just liquids most of the day today and didn't have the pain. I see the DR tomorrow so will see what they have to say. I don't have any other symptoms and due to an earlier issue had a CT scan to look for a leak last week, which was clear (though they don't always catch them). I've had a lot more than average pain through this whole thing, though much of it is from the hernia repair..
  13. Sorry for your loss. Pretty scary for both of you I imagine. I'd keep the date for now, but get through the mourning period (at least the start of it) and once things calm down try to have a real and honest conversation about it. Understanding what happened, as much as you can about why that happened and then looking at that VS your situation may help - but only after the initial emotions settle down. You can always cancel or bump out the date as it gets closer if needed. If it's the same surgeon perhaps another one or other mitigating measures can help him get comfortable.
  14. It gets easier, most people aren't hitting protein goals until 1.5-2 weeks out. I've been using premier protein shakes, it takes a while to drink them though (several hours). Is your issue taste or thickness? I had to dilute mine the first week. Some people get an adversion to protein shakes after, if you do call your dietician for ideas, they see it a lot

    Blah

Ship might have sailed for you on this already, but I told folks I was having a hernia repair - which is true. I then attribute everything to that, shrinking the liver, liquids after due to swelling in the throat etc. We'll see how it goes tomorrow, but so far so good! Weird as it sounds it's a bit easier post surgery.
  16. I had been dieting ever since high school, often losing good chunks of weight, but never could keep it off. At one point I lost nearly 100 lbs and was close to an ideal weight for about 5 years then slowly gained back to my highest ever. The fact that I had done it once before made the decision for surgery even harder... then my DR asked for a weight loss history. I wrote it all down and realized that while I lost weight I couldn't keep it off and that was one of the main drivers for the surgery. Just to prove it to myself before deciding to do the surgery i decided to do the same diet, just without surgery. I stuck to it for 4 weeks, was miserable, but lost 30 lbs (600 - 800 cals per day). Then I gained it all back plus another 10. That's when I decided I couldn't do it on my own and that I was running out of time before I had some kind of major health issue. No regrets - the important part is that you get to a healthy weight and avoid all the problems you would otherwise face. It doesn't matter how you get there, WLS is definitely not cheating and so far for me its as hard as any diet I've ever done, the one difference is I can't cheat or stop, my body won't physically let me. Hang in there and don't worry about if you tried hard enough, worry about doing this for yourself and taking care of yourself.

    Sleeve surgery December 12th

I had mine on the 12th too. I get a fairly severe pain in that area if I eat something that doesn't work or if I drink too fast. I also get a horrible left shoulder pain, which I think is likely referred from the diaphragm. If it's constant I would have more concern.

    Sleeve surgery last friday

Sip constantly. If you're on protein shakes you can thin them if needed with extra water. Try and walk / exercise daily, it does seem to help. I'm just ahead of you (12/12 sleeve) and have felt a dramatic improvement in pain and cramping in the last day or so. I'm experimenting with purée as my next stage and that's been interesting and satisfying! Who knew 2 OZ of puréed chicken would fill you up like a huge meal for hours
  19. I had 4 nights and 6 days due to a rehospitalization, but used the same bag both times. I only ended up using a few key items: - Earplugs (bring several in case you lose them), was huge as my roommate was pretty loud snoring / TV and one room was right by the nurses station - Eye mask - Same reasons as above, a few times due to the mask and earplugs they didn't need to wake me to do IV meds and the 6am blood draw could be done with me barely waking - Phone / IPad / charger with a long cord. Mostly read on the phone - pair of comfortable shorts and/or sweatpants I brought a bunch of other stuff, but other than a change of clothes didn't use it. I spent probably 70% of the non sleeping time walking or sitting outside the room somewhere
  20. Hang in. There.. I was the day before you and a couple of days ago I was Iin the same boat. They couldn't. Control my pain in the hospital and had to double the Dilauded IV meds, but only did it after I mentioned it several times (turns out I've got some resistance for whatever reason). I couldn't get anything down, but still made it home, where I was unable to swallow pain pills and after about 12 hours ended up back in the ER via ambulance with a 240 heart rate! There they did some serious pain control (dilauded) and hydrated and gave me some IV nutrients. I had serious stomach spasms that wouldn't stop - Ativan actually stopped those. At some point things got a lot better (maybe day 6?). My swelling went down, the pain and spasms stopped overnight and now I can almost hit my water goal and protein goal. The ER nurse said something really helpful to me. She said it's good you're doing this and that while it sucks now, you didn't do it for now, you did it for 10 years for now and you're going to look back on this as one of the best things you ever did. The next day the cardiologist said something very similar. It was very encouraging and they're right - it sucks, but it gets better and the end result is worth it. Hang in there!

That pain is the liquid getting stuck and waiting to enter your stomach. Smaller sips or more time between sips will help. Sitting really straight or standing may also help. It took me 3 hrs to drink a protein shake yesterday.... Hopefully it gets easier when the swelling goes down!

I was sleeved on 12/12 and had a hiatal hernia repair. Tomorrow Im' 7 days post surgery. For whatever reason I've had a tough time of it and was originally hospitalized for 2 nights and then after being home for a little over 12 hours had to rush back to the hospital via ambulance due to complications. Luckily nothing serious and after another 2 nights in the hospital I'm ok. I think that due to the hernia repair I have a lot of swelling and was unable to get anything down - including pain meds, which spiraled into a bunch of bad things. A few days ago I would have said this was a huge mistake - now I think it was a good choice and I can see the weight falling off already. Doing much better now and today is the first day I'll Come close to my protein and water goals. I'm down around 15 lbs from the surgery and 25 total so far, getting a daily walk in and otherwise doing decently. The pain levels are still high (mostly the hernia I think), but already feeling better. My tongue is a bit white, anyone see that? Doesn't seem to be thrush, some people have said it may be the result of Keto? I do have an appetite, but it's mental so easily ignored. Great to read everyone's stories!
  23. I got sleeved and a hiatal repair earlier this week. The procedure went smoothly, though in recovery I had a very abnormal level of pain (seemed like gas pain). They had to double my pain meds afterwards on the floor because of continued pain. I walked a ton (probably a mile+ in the hospital), but it didn't seem to help. They kept me an extra night after I was unable to get any Protein Shake down and had dry heaves and spasms. I did better today getting in almost 30 OZ and 1 Protein shake and went home. Now I'm in really sever pain even on the pain meds, any type of drink burns as it goes down and then gets stuck for a minute, once it's in the stomach it hurts and there is immediate cramping. Taking pills is a real challenge and I can no longer drink. Anyone have anything similar? If so what did you do? I'm afraid I'm going to end up back in the hospital. This pain is terrible and the pain pills aren't touching it.

    New sleeve issues

Thanks. Ended back up in the hospital due to a really high heart rate. Got behind on pain meds, which led to a spiral of other things. Should be ok, but will spend a couple nights in the hospital. For other folks about to go home or get the surgery don't get behind on pain meds even a little!

Sleeved on 12/12 a well. Currently hoping the pain will pass (mostly gas pain). Stayed 2 nights in he hospital and very afraid I'll be back there this weekend if things don't improve! Hoping this will all be a distant memory in a few weeks. My weight was up a tad when I got home too, they load you with fluids in surgery and at least for me the swelling is pretty extreme
