    Arthritis pain, bad knees

I got the sleeve because I have horrible osteoarthritis. At 36 I had a TKR, and my other knee is heading that way too. My doc allows ibuprofen after 6 weeks, but I have now started taking Celebrex. The Celebrex has been a life saver, but even without that, many doctors allow ibuprofen after sleeve, but not the bypass. Saying that, some other doctors do not allow it after either surgery, so do your research and be sure to see what your program recommends. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Anyone develop Acute Severe Diarrhea

I dont have my gallbladder so I had issues on and off before my sleeve. After I had sleeve, it was every single day. I finally went to my doc and they put me on a powder that I mix with juice and drink in the morning before I eat. It's been a life saver! I have had absolutely no issues since the day I started that. VSG on 4/16/18: My journey

I am weighing in at 177 lbs, and the weight loss has been super slow the past few months. That is my own fault though, and I have really buckled down to lose these last 8 pounds to hit my personal goal. I am 17 pounds from my doctors goal, so I am not too far away, who hoo! 4. Hi! I have been on BariatricPal for a while now but now that I am starting my two week liquid diet on Monday, I really want one thread where I can document my journey. I am 37 years old with a weight of 232 and a height of 5’6. That puts me at a BMI of 37, and I was approved through Cigna (approval took 48 hours) due to severe osteoarthritis. I had a total knee replacement at 36 and my other knee is pretty bad too. I have always been active and in the gym. I played high school and college soccer but was always heavier than the other females. I was an avid jogger but had to stop because of the knee issues. I’ve also been a yo-yo dieter all of my life. My highest weight was 269 and my lowest was 169. I’ve taken phentermine and had short term successes, but ultimately gained it back when I had my daughter. I also found that it caused high levels on anxiety and extreme fatigue, after taking it several times throughout the years. It just wasn’t worth the way it made me feel anymore. Anyhow, I start my two week liquid diet on Monday. We are allowed one meal at night so that helps. I have my last appointment with the surgeon on Thursday, and he may let me off of the liquid diet if I have met the goal he gave me when we started the process. His goal was 12 pounds and I lost 9 the first two months, but these last three pounds seem to be fighting me at every step. I hope that three days of the liquid diet will help with the plateau. I love to write and I think documenting my journey will help me a lot. Perhaps it might give a few other people some insight as well. Good luck everyone!! 5. So perhaps I misunderstood, but you have not had any complications correct? It sounds as if you are waiting for the ball to drop, for something to go horribly wrong? Have you thought to yourself that maybe, just maybe, you made the right decision? As someone that suffers from anxiety, I feel like I have been in your shoes and I know how debilitating it can be. Time will only prove what you might already know, but are too scared to admit. Maybe the bypass will be the best gift you could have ever given yourself. Six months down the road, when you are healthy and feeling better, I look forward to an update. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    No pizza for 4-5 months???

This is uncalled for. I am sorry, but I am tired of people on the site being judgemental. Let's be honest, if you think you will go the rest of your life without eating a piece of pizza, or something that is unhealthy, you are not being realistic. The point of this surgery is to not punish you. You can eat healthy most of the time, exercise, and enjoy a piece of pizza once in a blue moon. We all have our favorite foods and if we can handle these foods in moderation, as part of a generally healthy diet, than that is ok. I would love to meet someone a year out that has not had anything unhealthy, or one of their favorite foods. At 9 months out, I am almost at goal, maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly. And you know what? I have had a ice of pizza! I've had a few pieces of chocolate even! And...my doctor is ok with that because he knows what is realistic and what is not. Recovery

I am a teacher too, but I teach virtually. I had surgery Monday, got home Tuesday, and was back to work on Wednesday. If I had been in the brick and mortar though, there is no way. I would have needed at least 2 weeks off. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. This topic really hits home, now more than ever. My dad was pretty low on energy and not feeling very well and went to get a few blood tests drawn to make sure everything was working as it should. On November 10th, ten days later, he was dead from liver cancer that had spread to his spine, lungs, prostate, and kidneys. We went through his medical records that we could see online, and 6 months ago he went for a physical. Six of his blood tests came back abnormal then, including liver function tests and his blood sugar. His liver clearly showed that it was not functioning up to par, and his records indicate that his blood sugar qualified as a type II diabetes diagnosis. The worst part of it? His doctor diagnosed him with obesity and told him to lose weight. My dad died because the only thing his doctor could see was his weight. His oncologists believed that he had the cancer for about six months, so if the doctor had seen past his weight and investigated the blood results further, the cancer would have been caught very early.

    800 Calories Per Day

I am 8 months out and I am eating around 1200-1400 calories a day. I would be too hungry on 800, and my clinic wants us eating at least 1200. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    How will you handle Thanksgiving?

I am sorry to hear this. My dad also passed away about two weeks ago. He was diagnosed with cancer only 10 days before his death, so it has been rough. He wanted us to celebrate the holidays though, so we will have a traditional Thanksgiving with immediate family only. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    How will you handle Thanksgiving?

I probably have an unpopular opinion on this, but I plan to enjoy the food. I obviously have reduced portions, but at 6 months out, it is not so obvious as to draw attention. I plan on choosing the healthier options, and also having a small slice of pie and perhaps a glass of wine. I will not be tracking my calories tomorrow, I just plan on enjoying the day and then getting back to it on Friday. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    People like me

I think you will be happy with whatever you choose. I was a low BMI patient that qualified due to severe osteoarthritis, but my doctor still went over the risks. My doctor almost always recommends the sleeve, although he is very competent in both the sleeve and bypass. His main concern with the bypass is the long term issues with malabsorption. Saying that, if you take your vitamins and follow your plan, that should not be an issue. As he says though, we are all human and as you get used to your new normal and can begin to eat larger portions, many people will slip on their vitamin intake. Really, it comes down to what you are most comfortable with. You will see people who love both, so it is really up to you. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Volume and calories consumed daily

I am 6 months out and now eating 1400-1600 calories a day. I also work out 4 to 5 days a week, and burn on average 200-250 calories. I started at 241 and I was 229 on the day or my surgery. Today I am 182 and i am struggling to lose, but I have lost a lot of inches. I am 5'6 and 38 years old. Honestly, I would love to lose more but I am also content where I am. I am so tired of focusing on the scale though because I know that is the number that matters to the doctor. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. Seriously, this post is like beating a dead horse. Is there a way I can stop getting notifications for it? Someone simply said what worked for them, and after rereading it, I see nothing that tells me that she was telling anyone else that what they were doing was wrong. This is exactly why at 6 months post vsg, I am ready to say good riddance to BariaticPal. It has become nothing but people arguing over the most trivial things. 17. I am wondering how many people need plastic surgery after the gastric sleeve. I am 5’6 and weigh 235, and I am starting the process for gastric sleeve. I am realistic that a little skin sag may be a possibility, but I am worried about drastic skin sag and my insurance not covering any needed surgery. I am 37 years old and my goal weight is 140-150, so I would be looking at around 80 pounds. I’ve lost weight before and never had the loose skin, but I am older now and the weight loss would be much faster. I am also a teacher so plastic surgery will never but in my budget, lol. Has anyone lost a lot of weight and not needed surgery afterwards for skin?

    Anyone not need plastic surgery?

I am now almost 6 months post VSG. I am happy to say that I have no issues with loose skin yet, and I have lost 47 pounds. I currently weigh 182 and my personal goal is 170. My doctors want me around 160, but I want to hold on to a little bit of my curves, lol. I have been stalled for a month, so I think these last few pounds are going to fall off very slowly. Starting weight 225 lbs

I an 5'6, 38 years old and was 229 on the day of my VSG. I lost 47 pounds in the first 5.5 months, but have been stalled for the last month, at a weight of 182. I too was afraid of losing too much weight, but believe me, when your weight falls, the weight begins to fall off at a slower pace. I would be perfectly content at my current weight, but I really want to get to 170. It is going to take a long while, but slow and steady wins the race. 22. I was on the Nuvaring for the past two months. I had no bad side effects except for bloating, and enough of it that my weight increased by 7 pounds while I was on it, and then I lost those 7 pounds within 2 weeks of stopping. I knew it was water weight because I could feel the bloating, but it was still frustrating. Overall, I just feel better without the extra hormones, so I stopped taking it. We want to have another little one soon anyhow, so I figured that was the best move for me.
  23. I have hardly ever heard of complications that late. I know gerd and leaks happen, but you usually know you have those fairly soon. In fact, my surgeon prefers the sleeve for the long term lack of complications involved. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. Definitely look at your insurance. I know two major carriers changed their supervised diet requirements a few months ago. For example, Cigna no longer requires a supervised diet, when just 5 months ago, they did. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Diet Soda at 9 months post op?

I have one glass of Sprite zero each night. I am 5 months out and my doc said there is no issue with it, as long as it doesn't cause discomfort. It also doesn't stretch the sleeve. It all comes down to how you react to it. For me, it is like a bedtime snack. It doesn't cause me to eat sugar, but if it does for you, you will have to decide whether to keep drinking it. By the way, my surgeon believes that people who limit everything and eat a super restricted diet are at risk for both eating disorders or eventually gaining a lot of weight back. He said they will either become afraid to eat, or limit themselves for so long, that when they do introduce certain foods back in, they go react really badly to it. His medical opinion is that moderation is key for long term success. This is why my "diet" may be more lax than others you may see on this board. Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
