I'm 3 months out today, and starting in January I've gone back very slowly to lifting at the gym. A little background: I love lifting, and used to be pretty heavy into picking things up and putting them down again. About 4 years ago my husband and I started biking together, and my lift routine had to be cut back drastically so I could actually get my legs to cooperate on our routes. Sadly, I got heavier and we biked less and less and in November 2017 I had gastric bypass. SO, I have lots of questions for the lifters on here: 1. What is your current lift routine? 2. What was your experience starting after WLS, were you new to lifting or just getting back to business? 3. When you started, how was your routine structured? Heavy weights and less reps, or lighter weights and all the reps? 4. How much protein were you aiming for? I love lifting, and I'm really enjoying getting back into the gym but I've lost a lot of strength (some over time, some post surgery) and I'm feeling a little lost. Come talk iron with me! Dizziness 2 months out
Sqkysphnctr replied to Sqkysphnctr's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I saw my primary care yesterday. She did a lot of blood work in anticipation of my surgeon check up next month (checked all of my nutrients) and those results aren't back yet. Basically: 1. Yoga can make people dizzy who don't otherwise get dizzy. 2. It's not sodium unless I'm having very low BP, and I'm not. It's lowER now, but lower as in normal. 3. Your brain gets used to the status quo as far as blood volume/size. A quick change can throw off the homeostasis, and it takes time to get back normal. 4. Dizziness can be caused by a million things, some testable some not. So it's a wait and see for me right now. I'm glad to know it's probably just the weight loss and will hopefully correct itself. Do you mind sharing your daily protein intake? I'm nearly to 2 months, and just released to start trying veggies. I'm always curious to see how people balance their macros.

Thanks Orion and Alcn! Brief update: Surgical nurse suggested it was possibly low BP or reactive hypoglycemia. I already had an appointment with my NUT the same day, and she said the hypoglycemia was unlikely based on symptoms and timeline, but she mentioned the sodium issue. I was cleared to start trying veggies, and I started with pickles yesterday bc I missed them so much. Should also cover any missing sodium, although I'll also pick up some electrolytic water to drink every day. I reached out to my primary care, and I'm waiting on a call back so they can look into the bp issue. Unfortunately we got about 10+ inches of snow yesterday so no one is open. Teri, I have asthma and am only 40 pounds into my weight loss journey, I am frequently out of breath. [emoji23] Sent from my SM-G900V using BariatricPal mobile app -

It's a slow Tuesday so I'm weighing in (no pun intended) for Team _Kate_. I am type A, and very stubborn. I need and seek out the tough love, every day. I suspect 3 years out that's exactly what I will still be seeking out and handing out. It's a personal preference or personality quirk, however you want to look at it. WLS doesn't fix your brain, it's only a tool to help you help yourself. And every person who has it has to find their balance. Are you a "in moderation" person, and can you control yourself? I can't. I can't have a piece of cake, a piece of pizza, one cookie. I know that, and until my brain magically changes (please be soon, thanks in advance) I will continue to be a mean old biddy and advocate for control. Having said all of that, I spent several weekends making Christmas candy with my mom, and every day for probably 2 weeks I came home and thought, a little piece wouldn't hurt. It probably wouldn't make me sick. Just a little nibble. And it was so hard, and I thought I couldn't live another moment without taking a piece of brittle. But I did, and it sounds so cheesey, I hate myself a little for saying this... Being able to say, I didn't cheat, feels so much better than a stolen piece of candy would. Because now when I'm feeling weak, I think, I turned down delicious homemade candy for days on end. I got this. And so do you, OP. No.matter which team you fall on [emoji4]

I will update with anything I learn, but that makes sense logically. And is far less scary than the scenarios my mind was racing towards! Thanks for responding. -
Since surgery on 11/13, I've had moments of dizziness. Usually it happens if I bend over or squat down to do something; when I stand back up my legs get that "static TV" feeling and I get pretty dizzy for 5-10 seconds. Today, I did a yoga video (note: I've never done yoga before) and I got dizzier and dizzier, especially after stretches that locked my legs. At one point, I went from lying down to a sitting up move, and I got so dizzy I felt like I was going to fall over. It's the kind of dizzy like after you've been drinking, and you lay down in bed, the room spins, everything. The last dizzy spell left me feeling nauseous and just terrible for about an hour. I definitely should have stopped the DVD when I started getting a little dizzy, but I'm stubborn. Has anyone else had dizziness like this? I have had about 60 ounces of liquid before my video, and I take my vitamins religiously. I am contacting the surgeon tomorrow am. Sent from my SM-G900V using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm still sore there occasionally (22 days out today). It doesn't hurt all day, but if I move wrong it lets me know. Like if I put my left leg on the bed to dry off after a shower- it doesn't like that. But it's getting less frequent and less sharp by the day. A muscle tear (or cut in this case) takes time to heal. Don't push yourself too hard on that area, and make sure you get in your protein, that helps you heal more quickly. I found that wearing leggings or workout pants that I can pull up over my tummy helped a lot in the second and third week. It held everything still and didn't let my stomach bounce around much.
