Becoming a Olympic Athlete after surgery
Creekimp13 replied to Marissa37's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I don't think everyone becomes athletic after surgery. Though, it's true that some people start to use exercise as a coping mechanism to replace food. If you want to exercise more, do things you enjoy. The idea is a lifestyle change. Working out like a beast for a year and then quitting....will result in regain. Your metabolism will notice your decreased activity. Make small changes you can live with that will last a lifetime. When they get comfortable, challenge yourself to try a little more. Best place to start...is walking. You can do it anywhere, and the fitness trackers can make it a lot of fun. But above all...do things you really like doing. Don't make exercise painful. It should be something you enjoy. I have a buddy who gets miles in walking around the casino. Lets himself spin one game three times....for each lap around the casino he walks. He gets miles in and rarely spends $10.....which is what I spend on a day pass to the YMCA. I like to swim and do water aerobics. I also like to ride horses and walk my dog in the forest, and when the weather is nice, I like to kick-bike behind my dog at a the state park. Do something you like. Will be easier to stick to. Getting a friend to join you helps, too. -

The Guys Room -vs- The Powder Room Ladies Gone Wild
Creekimp13 posted a topic in Website Assistance & Suggestions
If we have "The guys' room" can we please just have "The gals' room" Having one named something generic and factual.....and the other named a reference to the 1950's and soft porn ....is extremely offputting. I'm sure it was meant to be cutesy, but in business, this would be seen as a microaggression, or sexual harassment. I suppose you could equalize in the other direction, and rename "the guys's room" something equally ridiculous and condescending like "The Humidor: Gentlemen Wanking" -
Something that everyone needs to keep in mind: When a post comes up in Trending Topics, or Recent Topics (the lists to the right where many of us browse recent content)....there is nothing that indicates which board that post is from. Many of the women who commented in this thread likely clicked on it there....and had absolutely no idea which board it was posted on. To react as though their motives were in some way inappropriate....is in itself...inappropriate.

http://www.journalacs.org/article/S1072-7515(17)32195-6/fulltext New Study....if you lose 8% or more of your body weight pre-op, evidence suggests you'll have a greater rate of post-op weight loss over 1 year, a shorter operation, and a shorter hospital stay. All really good reasons to take your preop diet seriously:) https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/892400#vp_2 check out the loss chart differences! -

Very honestly.... I really can't speak on this one cause I've always had a pretty good sex life. Not too much has changed. My back hurts less the day after. LOL. That's about it.

TooManyTacos, you use your weight the day of surgery 321, minus your goal 170.....so your excess weight on the day of surgery was 151 pounds. 18% of 151 is about 27 pounds....so the average weight loss for someone your height and weight...would be about 27 pounds in the first month. (but again, some lose more, some lose less...we're talking average) If you have an Average experience (and remember that people vary!)....at 6 months, you will have lost 50% of your excess weight....or about 75 pounds....bringing your weight down to around 246 in June. After six months, things slow down. By 18 months, the average sleeve patient loses about 70% of their excess weight. So in June of 2019...if you have an average experience...you will weigh around 215. Some people do much better than these numbers. Some do somewhat worse. Diet and exercise are critical to your success. -

TooManyTacos, Everything I am sharing I learned from attending several bariatric seminars when I was researching which group I wanted to use. The photos I share are from my binder, info given to me by my surgeon and/or nutritionist (who I continue to see monthly) The statistics on average monthly weight loss are readily available from many sources online. (and were also provided by my group) Ultimately, I went with a surgeon in the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative...which is a group of 38 hospitals in Michigan that are resource and data sharing to study and improve bariatric surgery outcomes. I am participating in their study. The dietary protocol was developed by University of Michigan, a leading global medical research University in Ann Arbor. (Trivia Bonus....my kid studies Microbiology there) http://michiganbsc.org/program-leads/ Here are some bios on the people who run the collaborative. Some really sharp medical research cookies. What's unique and cool about the collaborative...is that they are also working with insurance companies to optimize outcomes, and provide statistical data that helps the insurance company to better understand what they gain by allowing patients to utilize WLS. it's a win-win for everyone. Patients get better care. Doctors can learn from each other. New empirical data can be analyzed so protocol can be improved. And people like me....get followed for ten years to study longterm outcomes. -

I think everyone is just different, Fluff. Best to try each new food one at a time and see how you do. I have no problems with any of the things you've listed, if that helps. That said, not much bothers me. I eat finely diced celery in my chicken salad now with no problem...which I should technically avoid....but my nutritionist said if I tolerate it well...it's healthy fiber. Some folks do NOT tolerate fibrous foods, though, and it can mean pain for them. Go a little at a time and ease into new things. -
Sushi in soft phase? Rice?
Creekimp13 replied to atphiladephia's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Not a great idea. For many reasons. I love sushi, but raw seafood is not a risk I would take in a healing stomach. Even though I know the risk is extremely minimal, it's still just not worth it. Rice, particularly sushi rice....is a high glycemic food. It creates rebound hunger with insulin spikes. Also, rice is tough on a healing tummy, particularly that much rice without a liquid lubricant. I think the odds of it getting stuck and giving you a case of the slimeys is pretty high. My advice...avoid sushi until you've asked your doctor about it and made an informed decision. -
Depression is depression regardless of gender. You need coping resources. If the depression outweighs your available coping resources (family, friends, other means of support), it's a good idea to talk to your doc about other options. Depression is an extremely deadly illness. It's one of the top ten causes of death in the US. Should never be taken lightly.

My theory...bariatric surgery works because of changes to the gut microbiota. In particular, it increases bacterial diversity. Fat people have low microbial diversity in their gut. Low gut microbial diversity is associated with all sorts of illnesses. Surgery changes Ph and hormone levels that support more diversity. So does exercise, and a diet higher in soluble and nonsoluble fiber. it is possible that in the future, rather than doing surgery, we'll be able to synthetically alter the gut microbiome and affect some of these changes. Time will tell. Lots of research needs to happen. Changes in gut microbiota, hormones, diet and activity can all affect metabolic changes. I think that restriction plays a big factor, too. When you fall off your diet, you do much less damage when your stomach, at capacity, holds a cup of indiscretions....rather than five cups worth. Say you go to a party and lose your mind...you might end up doing 800 calories worth of damage....rather than 3000 calories. That's a big difference over time.

Would you do it again?
Creekimp13 replied to ElseeG's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
No, I would not have done this surgery at a BMI of 35 with no commodities. In that situation, for me, the benefits would not yet outweigh the risks. -
