  1. Which is ok:) 8 pounds 4 ounces would look pretty terrifying on someone who is 5'6".
  2. Didn't they put you on something for acid after surgery? At my group, we all take omeprazole for four months to aid in healing.

    When does the hunger return?

I felt like chewing my leg off I was so hungry the first week after surgery. Stopped being hungry around week 3 when I started eating 1000 calories a day. Have had no problems with hunger since.
  4. Put blocks under your bed's feet at the head of head of the bed. Even a 3-4 inch incline will do a lot to improve morning GERD.
  5. My kiddo has been on "Team Mom" since I started researching the surgery and which group I wanted to use. She's a Microbiology major at a major medical research university (her program was Pre-Med, but she's since elected to go to grad school to be a medical entomologist) and was really excited to help me research, and even more excited to see me address some of my medical conditions that have concerned her. She's 22, and has been one of my biggest cheerleaders. Also....here's a reality. Our kids share our genetics, and they absorbed our horrible food choices. Changing food culture at our house has been a family effort. My daughter and I are exchanging recipes, diet strategies and research articles. Every day we have a standing date on the phone. She's walking the two miles home to her apartment instead of taking the bus, and I walk with her every day (even though we're a hundred miles apart). It's an awesome time to talk and support each other's exercise habits. Be honest with your kids. Particularly, about an issue they might find themselves facing someday. Shame you direct at yourself...will be shame they feel is directed at them if they suffer weight issues. Don't go there. Work as a family to be happy and healthy and have a healthier fitness culture:)
  6. Found this in a previous post at Bariatricpal. Tried to bump the post, but it was too old to bump (from 2012) This is pretty cool...a photo of what happens to a sleeve over four years of stretching. Gets a bit bigger, but no where near original stomach size.

    Coping Mechanisms

Anything you really enjoy doing. Sometimes I paint and draw and sculpt to comfort myself. I have a studio room full of plants. Plants and critters make me feel better when I'm stressing and suffering the triggers that would typically drive me to food. Physical comforts can take the place of food for me sometimes. A hot bath. Foot massage. A snuggle with my hubby or critters. Making my bed up with the fruit of my sick blanket addiction, just to hop in and smell the fresh sheets and pet blankets. (I'm a sucker for a down blanket, with a waffle blanket, and a super soft fuzzy one...all piled together)...and down pillows) Sometimes going out to the barn where I ride horses gives me comfort. (it's a school a few miles from me). The barn always smells so good, people to talk to, horses to fuss over. Mostly, though, I call a friend, read, watch movies, walk:)

    Seniors and Baby Boomers

One of the gals getting sleeved the same day I was....was in her 60's. She was tougher and did better than the other girl in her 30's. We roamed the halls together a bit:)

Help.... gaining weight!!!! What should I do?

    1. Fewer calories in. 2. More calories out. Rinse. Repeat.

How fast did weight start coming off?

    Be patient. It'll happen:)
  11. I am really surprised her surgeon is recommending she use Excedrin due to it's aspirin and caffeine content. (and the danger of ulcers and leaks) But hey, all doctors are different. (I was told not to....might be ok if your daughter takes a Rx antacid? Aspirin thins the mucous lining of the stomach and can contribute to ulcers/leaks..perhaps something like Omeprazole counteracts this problem for her? Let the doc know how often she's taking Excedrin to make sure it's safe for her)

    Unsupportive spouse

My suggestion...DON'T f*ck him until he apologizes for that classless remark:)
  13. If you're invited, it's awesome that you can be there for support and that your daughter appreciates your concern. If you're not invited... your concern might not be appreciated. I'm concerned about this " no amount of medication has been able to completely stop her pain." She really shouldn't be on any pain meds at this point. What is she using?
  14. She needs to get in to see her surgeon to talk about these issues. Her three month visit should be coming up soon.
  15. Talk to your doctor about it.

    Items to bring to hospital?

Biotene mouth spray/swabs/etc. Worst dry mouth of my life....sandpaper tongue. Horrible. Chap stick! Lounge pants/PJ bottoms to put on under your hospital gown. Don't bother with too many things with sleeves....you'll have an IV. Once it's out or capped, you can wear normal clothes. (Typically right before you go home) Phone charger.

    Yay!

    Horrendous Halitosis

High Protein creates a lot of ammonia. so your breath can end up smelling like a full litter pan. The Keytones can smell sickly sweet like maple syrup. Ketosis breath smells a bit like a used cat pan with maple syrup on top. Bleh! When you eat more carbs, this will go away.
  19. Helicobacter Pylori is a common bacteria that causes Peptic ulcers. It's unknown how it's transmitted and why some people become infected with it and others don't. Sometimes an infection will cause Peptic ulcers and contribute to stomach cancer, and sometimes it will be harmless. It is generally treated with a couple of different antibiotics and a deacidifier. It takes two or more weeks to cure it. If there is any danger you have an infection, you need to know about it BEFORE you have surgery, so it can be treated and resolved before it causes complications. Even if you have it...it would just cause a slight delay while you treat it.
  20. I don't have the forehead wrinkles...but I've got a little bit of turkey neck! Damn those wrinkles!
  21. Awesome tip, James! Thanks! Gonna try me some of that! I've found that the retinol moisturizers help....but be sure to use a good cleanser, first, to get rid of the dead cells and plump fresh skin.
  22. They're honestly pretty damned good. They're kinda nutty and make a great replacement for almond flavor in my favorite smoothies:) They're growing on me.
  23. You need to do more research on gorillas:)
  24. Damn, it's almost as if you're living on a diet of pure fat. Wait.... In the last year, how much body fat has your body consumed? Something like a hundred pounds of it? Maybe this is related...just sayin'

    My god......what have I done?

Give it time. Once eating reasonable amounts becomes more comfortable, you'll feel a lot better. Hang in there! It gets better, I promise:)
