Just Curious .. can you handle bread, rice, pasta?
Creekimp13 replied to Leo85's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat brown rice, protein pasta and low glycemic breads (sourdough, pump, whole wheat) pretty regularly. I don't eat white rice. Brown rice only in small quantities. Never more than a quarter cup. Protein pasta is wonderful, but I eat about a half a cup and have to call it quits. Bread, I eat half a slice at a time. No white bread, italian, french, etc. -
Sleeved on 2/5/18 - losing slowly
Creekimp13 replied to Gogirl20's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are precisely average. People typically lose 18% of their net excess weight the first month. If you're a 350 pound person and lose 18% of your excess weight... you might lose 40 pounds. But you're not. You're 5'6". You have a normal BMI at 154 pounds. (I get that you'd prefer to weight a little less) 206-154 = 52 pounds of excess weight. 18% of 52 pounds is 9.3 pounds. You've lost 9 pounds....the exact average amount of weight someone your size is expected to lose. Congrats:) Should you be worried? No, you're doing perfectly. Is there anything you can do? Yes. Be patient and have realistic expectations. You're not going to lose weight like you weigh 350. -
Chewed Piece of Chicken, Spit it Out
Creekimp13 replied to logicwand's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Overall....chewing on stuff and spitting it out...is a huge no-no.....food disorder wise. You're also running a risk if you accidentally swallow. Ouch. That said...I did the same thing with a piece of steak at about two weeks. LOLOLOLOL Chewed it up, savored the juice, tossed the "pulp" to my doggo. I'm back on regular steak now, and regular everything...and as of yet I don't have any weird eating disorders. So maybe this is just something people do who are dying to chew something. It's been talked about at my support group meeting in real life too:) -
Gastric Sleeve & Hiatal HerniaSurgery
Creekimp13 replied to DeeHub's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I wish I could be more helpful here....I feel bad. I had an extremely easy recovery. I got used to drinking very fast. I never missed getting in 64 ounces per day. I felt incredibly good, had little pain, and was dying to eat. I've had no problems at all following the reintroduction of food phases. I know this isn't helpful. I hope your difficulties resolve soon and you'll be more comfortable. Time helps. Try to be patient and keep your chin up. Best wishes. -
Pre-surgery liquid diet
Creekimp13 replied to tuckersmom's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Ask if you can do an over the counter option for your pre-surgical diet. There are many available. If they refuse, ask them to justify the expense and explain why an over the counter product works for other surgeons and why they feel their product is superior. You can say...I want you to do the surgery, but I don't want to use your product. Please find me an alternative. It's that simple. That said...my over the counter shakes cost about $140 for 14 days. Less at Sam's Club. -
48 Hours to A Day of Hope!!!
Creekimp13 replied to frust8's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Kakatlady...you need an advocate to go with you and explain how your previous reasons for denial were an error. If you go in by yourself you'll hit the same wall again. Doctors will take the word of other doctors and put you on the defensive...and it will not go well from there. You need a doctor in your corner saying surgery can work for you. Please consider holding off on more appointments until you can find a mental health advocate to help you explain your circumstances and advocate for you. -
Gastric Sleeve & Hiatal HerniaSurgery
Creekimp13 replied to DeeHub's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had a hiatal hernia repair and sleeve and didn't experience any pain except for a little pinched nerve sensation in my shoulder. What you're describing sounds awful. Hope you feel better soon. -
Yay! Don'tcha love that?

Walk, walk again, then walk some more.

Why am I doing this? Did I blow it? Feeling the stress....
Creekimp13 replied to ajmsp8879's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Trust your surgical group. This isn't their first rodeo. They've have seen notes like this from doctors many times before. And in your doctor's defense, at least she was trying to document a problem she hoped to find you help for, and she made the correct referral.....it's better than a doctor who doesn't pay attention. There's no reason to be pissed. Your doctor was concerned about a possible eating disorder (and you were, too)...and sent you to a professional to investigate the possibility. They found you didn't have one. So there ya go. Further investigation proved a suspected diagnosis was not correct. This happens in all areas of medicine. You go where the symptoms point, and you seek additional expertise. Nothing in your history is wrong or inappropriate. Also, the term "eating disorder" is vague as to being nebulous. http://www.anad.org/get-information/about-eating-disorders/eating-disorder-types-and-symptoms/ What is Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder? When you meet some of the criteria for an eating disorder, but not all, you may find yourself in the category of OSFED: There are 5 categories of OSFED: Atypical Anorexia Nervosa: meeting all of the symptoms of Anorexia with weight at or above normal range Binge Eating Disorder that is less frequent or did not occur as long as needed for the full diagnosis Bulimia Nervosa that is less frequent or did not occur as long as needed for the full diagnosis Purging Disorder is when a person purges without bingeing Night Eating Syndrome: this occurs when a person consumes at least 25% of their daily intake after the evening meal. Waking up after going to bed in order to eat may also occur. Unspecified Feeding or Eating Disorder is for disorders which do not meet the criteria of any of the above disorders, but still cause great emotional upset or interferes with daily life. -
I think it's awesome that your weight management center has a "clothing closet":) Would be a blast if I could coordinate a plus size patient to patient sale at my group....kinda like the mom to mom sales they used to do when my kiddo was little.

I had sleeve, not bypass....but I've never thrown up. No nausea, no vomiting since surgery.

Stricture and post op complications
Creekimp13 replied to ElseeG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Elsee, you need to have someone near your home who is willing to do your follow up care. Someone you can all in case of emergency, or if you have concerns. Complications are not super common, but they do occur. Sometimes weeks and months down the road. Do your research to make sure you're prepared. -

I do 1000-1200 calories per day. I get at least 60g of Protein. I eat a lot of veggies and fruit. I don't eat any refined high glycemic index carbs. (or a very tiny amount...never more than 75 calories in a day) I do eat low glycemic carbs like whole grains, beans, oatmeal, etc. And lots of very lean protein. Yogurt is another favorite. Stalls are just gonna happen. Your body has years of evolutionary defense mechanisms in place to help keep you from starving to death during famines and challenging years. It will do all sorts of nasty tricks to try to get you to return to your bad eating habits, and it will grind weight loss to a stop. Eventually, though....something has to give. You will lose weight. Be patient. Be consistent.
-
Yay! Good job! Congrats on your new life:)
-
What you're describing sounds like "the foamies" or "the slimes".....what happens is that your stomach gets a little stuck for a few minutes and you can't swallow your saliva because it has no where to go. If you walk and breath deeply, your diaphragm will put pressure on your stomach and stimulate peristalsis...and eventually your stomach will move things along and this will go away. Very very common. You'll grow out of it. As your stomach inflamation goes away and you get used to eating a little more....it should resolve. Just pay close attention to chewing well and taking small bites.

Advice you wish knew before surgery
Creekimp13 replied to RoxyFox87's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Things I wish I'd know: 1. Surgery is not the hard part. It's one day of crazy and you hardly remember it. The hard part is the Pre-Surgical diet and the post surgical diet. Two weeks before and two weeks after when you pretty literally starve. It's hard. It challenges you. You get really tired of jello. And chicken broth starts to taste like chicken armpit. Compared to the diet two weeks before and after....surgery is a blink. 2. That drinking 64 ounces of water....one ounce at a time, in twelve sips every 15 minutes....takes up your whole freaking day. It's a pain in the ass to have to think about it constantly for days....but you have to, or you'll end up in the emergency room with dehydration. 3. How good I'd feel. I was bracing myself for weeks of fatigue and misery...and I know some people do experience this. But doing my program to the letter and eating all the calories/protein/fluids I was supposed to......I felt terrific. 4. How alarmingly dry my mouth would be after surgery. We're talking sandpaper tongue. OMG, so dry! Weird! 5. That weight loss happens in fits and spurts....that you stall for weeks and suddenly lose seven pounds. That your body works against you to prevent itself from having too much rapid weight loss and has a ton of built in evolutionary defense mechanisms to fight famines and survive. (that are insanely maddening when you WANT to lose weight rapidly) 6. That sizes now are much bigger than they were when I was in regular sized clothes years ago. Today's size 16 is shockingly big compared to 20 years ago. -
Sex can mean so many things.... Sex of a sort can happen pretty quick. Just watch yourself and don't do anything that stresses your incisions or puts too much pressure on your abdomen. Some folks are more creative than others.

High liver enzymes
Creekimp13 replied to ZaylaEmora24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
High liver enzymes can indicate gallstones, pancreatitis, and a few other things. Angrylpus, I'm betting yours will fall since you had your gallbladder removed. Gallbladder issues are very common after bariatric surgery. -
Scale keeps bouncing. 204, 206, 203, 204, 207 OMG, 202, 204, 203.
Creekimp13 replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Seahawks...no worries! My point was...if you're stuck, too, you're not alone:) My nutritionist assures me it's very common and that it's all about patience and remaining consistent. Was just sayin....hey all you other stuck people....I feel your pain! (I'm not really worried about it, just feeling kinda impatient) -
I hate eating out now!
Creekimp13 replied to TakingABreak's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I got that card from my surgeon. it explains to restaurants that I've had gastric sleeve and should be allowed to order off the children's or senior menu...and gives them a contact number if they have questions. They technically don't have to allow this, but nearly everyone will with the card. -
