Bariatric haul! What have you bought for your journey or plan to buy?
Creekimp13 replied to Yo-yo girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
"Bariatric haul! What have you bought for your journey or plan to buy?" I'm gonna buy a kick bike this fall:) I want to bike behind my puppy in the woods like this: Looks like a blast! -
When I'm shopping, I still go straight to the plus size rack and look at size 22 or 24. Which is crazy...because I fit into mostly 14's and 16's these days (depending on the maker...women's clothes sizes suck...no rhyme or reason to them) But yeah... My bestie keeps dragging me out of the plus sizes and handing me 14's to try on. And they fit great. But it still feels very weird. (and really cool!) But mostly....totally weird. LOL:)

Paxil is a brutal wean, Apple, I don't envy you. It's also one of the worst ones out there for weight gain. Plus side: I'm guessing you're gonna see a bump in weight loss after you're off:) I gained 25 pounds in a year on Paxil in the late 90's. Felt great, but ate like a crazed hippy at a rainbow gathering. LOL:) Had crazy dreams when I went off, but a lot of folks have worse discontinuation symptoms. You are very smart to wean.

I love Mayo Clinic Diet. We all have our prejudices about diet...and believe the diet gurus we choose. it's all controversial. Eating Mayo Clinic Diet...in less than a year I have: *Improved my blood sugar from pre-diabetic to normal. *Got off blood pressure medication and have normal blood pressure *Got off diuretics and no longer have any fluid or swelling in my legs. *Got off antidepressants. *I sleep great again. Which is extremely important for weight loss. *Have perfect cholesterol numbers The only medication I take is thyroid medication now. And bariatric vitamins:) Lot of ways up this mountain. Pick the path that's best for you.

Flip side.... I've been eating Mayo Clinic Diet for about a year...which has a ton of fruit, whole grains, beans, potatoes, brown rice, veggies, protein, etc. (I also eat protein bars and frozen yogurt bars in moderation and love them) I eat 1200 calories every day and have since week three after surgery.....and at support group, my progress has been as good or better than people eating Keto and very restricted calories. In the end...it's best to work with your nutitionist and do what works for you. Best Wishes:) PS...don't forget that exercise is critical to weight loss. My doctor writes my exercise recommendation on a prescription pad.

I think a lot of folks expect the surgery to fix their tummy and their head at the same time....and it's just not true. A lot of people struggle with their new normal, and finding a way to resolve some of the emotional scars of obesity. Could it hurt to talk to a weight loss therapist? If that's possible for you....I'd strongly recommend it. Not because you "need" it....but because it's helpful and can give you some great strategies to emotionally metabolize all of the positive things going on in your life. Best wishes!

Weight Fluctuation
Creekimp13 replied to MissDixie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think this is probably the cause of your bounce. Also, stalls are just part of the game. Keep working on it, you'll get there! Patience is hard when the scale isn't moving...but if you're consistent...things will move in the right direction. Good luck! -
MissLindsey, these are great questions for your nutritionist visits. Each bariatric group likes their clients to follow a diet that they approve and guide. They'll have good recommendations for you on the macros they think are best for your particular situation. Best wishes!

Must be good...cause my kiddo asked me to make it for dinner and it's one of my "diet recipes". Recipe is super easy. Brown some chicken tenderloins in a little olive oil, salt and pepper. Chop them into bite sized pieces. add one chopped green pepper two tablespoons fresh grated ginger....just grate the root into the pan sprinkle with a tablespoon of corn starch (or any thickener..or omit and eat it runny...lol) add one cup chicken broth add two cans peach slices in natural juice. Add salt, pepper and Splenda per your tastes. I add quite a bit of splenda to this to make it sweet...and it ends up tasting kinda like sweet and sour chicken. Some people like it more savory. I eat it over a little brown rice (optional) My whole family loves this one.

Woah! Thank goodness for insurance...$25,000

Mine was over $60K, but I had a hiatal hernia repair, too. -
I kinda freestyle on adding protein powders to regular recipes to get more bang in. All of these can be added to smoothies I use: *Brown rice protein mixed with pea protein * Peanut butter powder *ground crickets (yes, I'm serious...not for all tastes..lol) *almond "flour" *powdered egg whites And whey protein is usually something I get in Premier Protein caramel shakes....that I put in my coffee.

Been there! I spent the third day of my liquid diet cooking Thanksgiving dinner for my family. Pure hell. I feel your pain!

This is an awesome reason to change your lifestyle habits. It's awesome you're thinking about this. So often I see folks on diets talking about "not making their kids give up treats and eat diet food" and I think....man, what an opportunity missed! These kids share our genetics and have learned our eating behaviors. Teaching your kids to eat healthy...isn't a punishment, it's a kindness. Being a good example...is being an amazing dad. Best wishes. -
My diet allows 75 calories of "sweets" per day. I can eat them, or bank them for a special occasion. Yep...i've eaten sugar. I like it as much as I ever have...which gives pause for concern. My rules about sugar: I can eat a bite or two of something sugary outside the house. I don't exceed 75 calories per day. (Most days I don't eat these calories....but once in a while it's nice to have them there on a holiday, birthday, party, etc.) Sugar is a slippery slope for me, so I'm very mindful if I choose to indulge. I don't eat sugar alone. Only with my support people present. I need extra accountability help with sugar...so this is a self imposed safety net. The bad news....yes...sleeve people can pig out on sugar, most sugar foods are slider foods, it's a dangerous way to sabotage yourself if you get into the habit. Sleeve people generally don't have dumping syndrome symptoms. The good news....with extreme portion control and accountability you can have treats once in a while. But it might be best to wait until maintenance phase.

Endoscopy is super easy and super quick. You're out for about 20-30 minutes and you wake right up. I had mine done at 10AM and was able to go to lunch with hubby on our way home from the appointment. Please don't obsess about it...it's a piece of cake.

Pre-op diet — am I missing something?
Creekimp13 replied to Pink nova's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
I had just shakes for two weeks...with one yogurt or oatmeal per day......and sugar free clear liquids. Some people get one protein/nonstarchy veggie meal per day. Your diet sounds like a bear. I wish I could say something really encouraging here....but the pre-op diet was hell on Earth for me. Way worse than the actual surgery or recovery for me. Experiences differ...but yeah...sounds like you're up against a very strict, very long version. Your doctor sounds Sadistic. If you cheat (don't cheat!)....but if you do....DO NOT eat carbs. The whole point of the diet is to shrink your liver by being very carb restricted. If you cheat, cheat with protein or non starchy veggies. Best idea... don't cheat. Take it a day at a time. And hang in there! Best wishes. -
I totally get wanting to have surgery so bad that every possible derailment freaks you out. Been there:) Glad all is well!

Sounds crazy, doesn't it? I've had a couple half days off work and have been breaking my butt the past five days doing spring clean up. Tons of raking, mowing, pulling out vines, cutting down scrap vegetation, chopping out huge piles of stuff to burn, cleaning the tree line, cleaning up raised garden beds, tilling. Doing stuff i've wanted to do for years:) It really feels amazing to work outside for most of the day and not be out of breath after half an hour. I never thought I'd get back to this level of stamina or energy. It's amazing to me, and I am LOVING it! And ON TOP of the very cool reality that I'm gonna have a veggie garden and awesome herb garden this year (and a super tidy gorgeous yard)....this little spurt of added exercise has kicked my metabolism into gear and i've lost 10 pounds in the last month.....which is pretty darned cool given that the previous two months had slowed down to 5-6 pound losses. Yard work isn't generally something people write home about and enjoy.......but this year, it couldn't be more welcome:)

Pre-Op weight loss improves WLS outcomes

^^listen to Proudgrammy and your doctor. I was given a binder to wear for comfort at the hospital. I hated it and took it off immediately after surgery...which they said was fine. Some people find them really helpful...others not so much. But the big thing here is that your doctor is telling you to wear lose clothes. (good catch Grammy) It's extremely important to follow instructions. I think it was brilliant to send a picture to your doctor, by the way. Have you had any issues with anxiety or excessive worrying in the past?

Pre-Op weight loss improves WLS outcomes
Creekimp13 replied to Creekimp13's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I don't think this study is suggesting causation. But it does give pretty compelling evidence that those who lose more weight before surgery on a restricted calorie diet will lose more weight after surgery. All factors as to why be d@mned. It's a predictive data model. Not causative. Is the title of the article "Pre-Op weight loss improves WLS outcomes" fair? That's subjective, but I think it's fair. Weight loss on a low calorie diet before surgery IS statistically predictive of more success after surgery. It might not be the whole story, but it's still valid predictive information. -
