Fear of death?
Creekimp13 replied to Love2Travel816's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's more logical to fear dying of an obesity related cause...than a planned surgery with prescreenings. If you want to be afraid....be afraid of the years of your life obesity related illness will rob from you if you do not address the issue and improve your health. This surgery is done under controlled conditions with lots of information on the table. Obesity related heart attacks, strokes and embolisms come out of no where. You're fearing the wrong scenario. Just sayin. -
Sometimes you can find inexpensive blood glucose monitors and strips on Ebay. They might be left over from someone's deceased loved one, or sent on a continual basis to a patient in the mail and are more than that person can use...so they get sold. I had a diabetic dog for ten years, and bought all of her monitoring supplies this way. Out of curiosity, I tested myself with them before going in for bloodwork...they were quite accurate. Check ebay for the brand you prefer and look at some alternate brands, too. You need to get your insurance straightened out and get the care and monitoring you deserve....but this might be an affordable interim measure.

concert either after surgery/ during pre op liquid diet?
Creekimp13 replied to saygrace's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
A week after....no. Don't do it. Pre-op? You might be ok. But you'll be tired and hungrier than you've ever been in your life. You'll probably have a brutal headache. All the people grilling and eating junk food and drinking around you will suck...a lot. But if you're so into the music that it's a good distration, maybe this could work. Personally? I'd give the surgery and prep the priority it deserves....and skip the concert. You're having major abdominal surgery. Avoiding stress and dehydration just prior is common sense. -
Insurance doesn't cover surgery
Creekimp13 replied to Ellens531's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Be careful. It's relatively easy for MOST people...but if you run into complications, being at a clinic away from home can turn into a nightmare. Not a super common scenario, but it does happen pretty often (about 5% of patients...one in twenty). Lot of stories of folks here, in fact, who have had issues with strictures, bleeds, digestive issues, etc. Very important to figure out who is going to take care of you if problems arise once you get home, who you can call for help, ect. -
Not a guy and don't work at a factory. I love to play hard and work outside and am a huge water drinker. I'm six months out and can only drink about 4-6 ounces at a time. (just got in from mowing lawns by hand for an hour....very hot and thirsty....and that's the limit) Mind you, if I wait twenty minutes or so, I can suck down another 4 to 6.....but yeah, I used to be able to drink a full 12 ounce bottle in minutes and that just ain't happenin anymore. Your concern is real. If you are able to get one of those weird water back packs where you can drink through a tube all day....you'd probably be ok. You'll be able to stay hydrated, but you need much more access to water because you'll need to drink much more frequently. Very wise thing to be thinking about.

Severe enough symptoms to cause issues with daily function (lightheadedness, passing out, seizures, auto accidents caused by this) are pretty rare.....but this is a potential problem that people need to be aware of. Treatment is typically paying close attention to diet, recognizing symptoms early and eating to control them. Severe forms can require medication and even partial pancreatectomy might be needed. If you happen to draw this particular card, it can be a serious problem. Luckily, though, this is pretty rare. It should also be noted that this syndrome often occurs years after weight loss surgery.

Research on this complication is ongoing. Of 175 eligible patients, 120 were randomized 1:1 to RYGB or SG; 117 (93%) completed the 12-month follow-up. Reactive hypoglycemia was detected in 14% and 29% of SG and RYGB patients (P = 0.079), respectively, with the effect of treatment in multivariate analysis significant at P = 0.018. Daily hypoglycemic episodes during continuous glucose monitoring did not differ between groups (P = 0.75). Four of 59 RYGB subjects (6.8%) had 1 to 3 hospitalizations for symptomatic hypoglycemia vs 0 in SG. The static β-cell glucose sensitivity index increased after both treatments (P < 0.001), but the dynamic β-cell glucose sensitivity index increased significantly in SG (P = 0.008) and decreased in RYGB (P = 0.004 for time × treatment interaction). Whole-body insulin sensitivity increased about 10-fold in both groups.

Bleeding Gastric Ulcer
Creekimp13 replied to pdallariva's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes H. Pylori causes ulcers. Nicotine is extremely bad to cause ulcers, too. -
Here's a recipe, so you get the general idea https://emilybites.com/2011/07/lasagna-cupcakes.html But you can make these however you like them. I use chicken more often than beef I like Ragu chunky garden style super mushroom for my sauce I like to use fresh mozzarella and low fat ricotta, and a little shake of parm on top Sometimes i like zucchini in it:) Wonton wrappers are only 20 calories each. I use about three per cup. These are awesome for packed lunches:) They freeze and reheat well, too.

Month By Month Weight Loss
Creekimp13 replied to Love2Travel816's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Fischer et al., systematically analyze data from 123 sleeve gastrectomy studies involving 12,129 patients. The excessive weight loss in patients who had sleeve gastrectomy was 56.1% at 12 months post-surgery (Fischer et al., 2012). The weight loss varies between 42% -78%. In another study conducted by Gagner et al., the weight loss data from 130 doctors and 46,133 gastric sleeve surgeries were compared. The average, excessive weight loss at the end of the first year of gastric sleeve surgery was 59% (Gagner, Deitel, Erickson, & Crosby, 2013). Doctors are close to the value gotten by Fischer et al. Realistically....the hard data puts average excess weight loss after sleeve....at about 55-60% at one year post surgery. And 60-70% at eighteen months to two years post surgery. Then, by year three, many people will regain about 5-10%. -
Favorite Healthy Foods after Surgery
Creekimp13 replied to Gundy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Grilled salmon seems to hit the spot lately. Slap it right on the grill like a steak. I was never a salmon fan before and now I can't seem to get enough of it. I eat it with grilled asparagus, romaine, avocado, peppers, and good tomatoes. Sometimes I shake some potato wedges in olive oil and rosemary, salt and pepper and grill them in a tin foil bag, too. Steel cut oats with dried cherries and pecans. Tofu chili wonton wrapper cupcake lasagna Protein pasta Chicken stir fry Steak salad with swiss and hard boiled egg. -
Adding Fruits into Your Shakes?
Creekimp13 replied to Love2Travel816's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
My diet allows fruit. I like frozen bananas and strawberries in my shakes. I have since three weeks post surgery. Different doctors push different diet strategies. Lot of different ways up the mountain. i like a diet that includes fruit. It can be done. -
I have to ask cause I'm kinda gobsmacked. What, exactly, did you expect from this surgery?

Partner issues after wls
Creekimp13 replied to Sallymarina70's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
This is a big red flag for me: "I often find that I associate all the negative feelings from when I was unwell with him." Guy doesn't have to be acting like a jerk or doing anything wrong at all....to still be the wrong guy. -
First visit to the hospital
Creekimp13 replied to Kenny B's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Questions for doc: How many of these procedures have you done? What is your complication rate? What is the average excess weight loss of your patients in 6, 12, 18 months? -

Partner issues after wls
Creekimp13 replied to Sallymarina70's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Sometimes a poor relationship is one of the driving forces behind self destructive eating habits. While it isn't fair to blame others for the choices you make, it's also unfair to assume the stresses your relationship might goes through after weight loss surgery are "your fault" or something "you chose". It isn't all on you. Relationships are always two way streets. Staying in them is a daily choice and both partners have to work hard to make them function well. That especially includes times of transition and support. Sometimes an overindulged comfort habit (and returning to it when we know it's time to outgrow it) is a symptom of a bigger problem. And sometimes moving forward demands that the bigger problem be addressed. Otherwise, you can end up back in the same self destructive cycle. There is nothing that will sabotage positive changes in your life more than a toxic relationship. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to be with someone who supports your goals and your health. A Swedish study last year compared 29,234 obese individuals who had weight loss surgery and 283,748 individuals in the general population. The unmarried people who had weight-loss surgery were 35 percent more likely to get married, and surgery patients who were married were 41 percent more likely to get divorced, compared to people in the general population. -
We were on the road shopping for a new (used) car for my kiddo. The rest of the family wanted good old BK Steakhouse....so we went to see that creepy king. I had the veggie burger with all the veggies on it, just like they make it... and an iced tea. And I'll admit it...I ate a couple of my hubby's fries. Could not eat even half of the veggie burger....but it was freakin' delicious. Half a veggie burger= 200 calories and 10 grams of protien. Throw in 50 calories for the fries I swiped. A totally do-able lunch budget:) I feel kinda victorious when I can find ways to enjoy out to eat crap with friends and family....in a sensible way that doesn't break the calorie budget or derail my diet. Win-win. I like options. And the half a veggie burger option...is awesome. Also found an AWESOME car for the kiddo:) Almost a clone of her old one, only blue this time instead of brown. She's super excited:)

As much as I want to, and as much as i've tried...I hate Kale, too. Bleh. But I love so many other deep green veggies, it's ok that I don't like it. Maybe it's one of those weird ones where certain people have taste receptors that actually experience its taste differently? I've tried many a chopped Kale salad recipe...put it in green shakes...I've worked at it....and no dice. The bearded dragon loves it, though:)

Fast Food Breakfast after Weight Loss Surgery
Creekimp13 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
I'm a purist, I like the traditional egg mcmuffin...which has 300 calories and 18 grams of protein. But I can only eat half of that sucker. So, I bring along a Caramel Premier Protein. Dump about 1/3 in a large black coffee, and eat half my traditional egg mcmuffin. 150 calories and 8g protein for my half sandwich 60 calories and 10g protein for my protein shake coffee. 210 calories and 18g protein breakfast on the go:) (or lunch, if you like breakfast for lunch) If your dog is your copilot, chances are good she would take care of the remaining sandwich for you:) Only thing that could make this better...is if I could teach McDonalds to use whole grain muffins. -

I ate at Burger King yesterday
Creekimp13 replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Already answered that. LOL. Yes, I did. My diet allows 75 naughty "sweets" calories per day. I used them on the white bun. (and yes, know it's junk...not a typical choice for me, I always do whole grain buns at home). My diet is not carb restricted. I eat a ton of carbs. But I do not typically eat white breads, refined stuff or more than 75 calories worth of sugary stuff per day.
