Preop diet, why protein shakes only?

Watching a bariatric surgery being done on Youtube gave me serious respect for the liver shrinking diet. The surgeon is working SO CLOSE to your spleen when he/she does a bariatric surgery. Spleens are terrifying. They bleed if you breath on them wrong...and they bleed dangerously. Giving my doc plenty of space to work around an organ that resembles a hemorrhage hand grenade with a loose pin....is extremely purdent in my mind. Reducing a fatty liver is also good for anesthetic metabolism and general recovery. Also...doing the liquid diet gives you a psychological clue what you're in for. If anyone is gonna find not eating intolerable and have cold feet...better they reach this conclusion before surgery...than after surgery.
  2. Ah, but I'd lost weight for six months before surgery! 36 pounds....on old fashioned diet and exercise. I was 234 on the day of surgery. So, since December 5th, I've lost 62 pounds. An average of about 9 pounds a month....which I'm pretty damned proud of. Lately, it's slowed down a lot. About a pound a week on average. Which at this stage in the game is is just fine. Gonna go eat me some slider oat meal and think about what's for dinner:) LOL!

I have become a bad influence

Doing great, Matt....still working on the last couple pounds...got my damned period. LOL. Aren't you glad you asked? But yeah, I'm wrapping it up at the end of July for sure:) And I'm pretty sure I'll crush those last couple of pesky pounds before I go. Will come back to post photos from the "fat prom" this fall, but beyond that, it's time this lunatic left the asylum. Sometimes recovery means leaving the hospital so to speak:) I work well with exit dates. LOL.

    how to lower a1c

Eliminate refined sugar from your diet. Stop eating processed foods. Control your diabetes with the help of your doctor. Test your blood sugar often. Take meds as prescribed on the correct schedule. Choose low glycemic carbs that metabolize slower and don't set you up for rebound hunger. Eat more non-starchy veggies. Watch sugar content in condiments. Eat beans.
  5. Well, your food IS sad! Because you kinda starve yourself sillykitty...cause you want to have plastic surgery by the end of the year. I love you, Kitty...but I'd die trying to eat your diet. I'd lose my mind one night and eat french fries out of a dumpster while hissing "My Precious!" I don't know whether to think you have the most impressive will power I've ever seen....or a screw loose....but I support your efforts and root for your success. And wow have you been losing! Well done, girl! I'm more of a...screw it, slow and steady loss is just fine kinda person. My ability to control my eating depends so much on not being hungry and eating good stuff that supports stellar energy and stable blood sugar. I have learned SO MUCH this year about how to cook right, and find stuff I genuinely love that is good for me. Love love love the Mayo Clinic Diet. FINALLY a diet I can stick with and really enjoy:) The sleeve helps...a LOT....but finding that diet and discovering how it changes my cravings has been a huge part of the puzzle for me, too. Everyone is so different. If I get hungry....I screw up. I don't wanna screw up...so I work hard to never let myself get hungry. For me ....hungry = an eating accident begging to happen. My emergency food that I have learned to run to in crisis.... Watermelon. After a cup of watermelon, sanity returns rapidly. 46 calories is cheap price to pay to regain food sense and make good choices.
  6. OH yeah....almost forgot....I eat this almost every day: Veggie soup with a few beans...food of the Gods. Yum! never get sick of it, and switch it up every time. Sometimes the broth is chickeny, sometimes beefy, sometimes I go coconut milk and curry, sometimes I throw a glob of peanut butter in there with ginger and garlic and lemon grass.....and the veggies and beans are mix and match as well. Made by the bucket once a week...my family lives on this stuff.
  7. Here's what a day of eating looks like at my house:) There would also be piece of fruit, and PP shake coffee in there somewhere:) Prolly another snack, too, like yogurt or a packet of oatmeal. I eat A LOT. But I do keep calories under 1200! PS...I make the ice cream out of frozen bananas, splenda, and coco powder...it's awesome!

    Not doing well

Feel better, soon! They'll figure it out, and it'll be ok....but I know it sucks donkey balls. So sorry!
  9. The reduced food is pretty temporary. I was eating 1200 calories a day by month two. What's been sort of an adjustment is eating six times a day. I used to eat a lot, but typically only a couple times a day...so it's been kinda weird. I actually feel like I'm eating all the time now...smaller amounts for sure...but I don't feel deprived. My poo is regular and more normal than it's been in my life. Fruits, veggies, fiber = great poo.

    Patience.

I want a baby so bad!!!

Give your body time to recover! The health of your pregnancy depends on it. You want your baby to have the best....so wait until your body has truly recovered.

You're adorable, BigLu:) Vent away! Congrats on taking action to gift yourself and your family with a healthier you.

    Gaining weight

You're fine. Stick to your program. There are little stalls and a pound up and down here and there. it's normal. Be patient with it.

Fever, pain & vomiting . IM OVER it

So glad the pancreatitis is improving! Good news! Take it slow and steady...you're on the mend:) Wishing you a rapid recovery.
  15. At about three months out....I had a three week stall. I was pulling my hair out (and it was coming out, believe me...lol) trying everything to kick my weight loss into gear again. Barely eating 1000 calories (I typically eat 1200), exercising like a maniac, being stupid and listening to bad advice in desperation.... starvation, cutting my healthy carbs, all sorts of stupid...I did it...and got no where. STUCK. For three freaking weeks. Finally gave up, said, feck this...and went back to my regular healthy carb based 1200 calorie Mayo Clinic Diet. Figured I'd either eventually lose weight, or just maintain my loss, call it a day... and feel sane again. Started losing again slow and steady. Did I mention slow? LOL...but steady...and I felt terrific. I'm at the end of my weight loss phase these days...which is evidence that even the most flawed dieters can be successful if they don't give up! You can be an absolute screw up....and as long as you wake up each day and make an effort....and move your habits just an inch or two in the right direction every day...you'll get there. You really will. Be patient with yourself. Love yourself. Let little screw ups go and move on...they're not world ending. Focus on permanent habits. Try for good change EVERY day. Let the little **** go. It's not worth torturing yourself and throwing in the towel over. We don't have to be perfect. I have gotten extremely comfortable with my forever diet...no more crazed desperation, no more rushing shite, no more frantic yaya.... just lots of really good healthy food, lots of exercise I enjoy....and 75 or so naughty calories a day. A livable, healthy, balance. (for me) So...this week, I thought I really blew it... Cause I had a McD's ice cream cone after the fireworks with the fam, I ate half a veggie burger at Burger King on Tuesday with my bestie after my tattoo (with the bun and some of my bestie's fries!), ate a ton of awesome treats at our pool party...though it was all pretty dang healthy:) And....ok, I'll be honest...was kinda relaxed about my food journal. Hubby and kiddo were around and it was vacation...so I relaxed a little. So, I'm thinkin...well crap...it's not gonna be pretty this week. Stepped on the scale and lo and behold....I lost a little over two pounds...in one week...which this far out is freaking incredible!!! ( I started thinking about the walking I did at the air show and fireworks, and all the pool party prep and swimming, lawn mowing, gardening, pulling weeds for party...and yep...I worked that two pounds off my butt pretty easily given the extra hours of exercise) That said? Isn't it nuts how you can work so hard and get no where...and relax a little and make awesome progress sometime? Sometimes it feels like we're at the mercy of a sick joke. LOLOLOLOL! I will never understand how the weight loss Gods work. They are a cruel, twisted, unpredictable race of beings. Hoping everyone's having a terrific summer:)

How bad is Gerd after Sleeve?

There are a few folks around who have been in total hell with GERD after sleeve on here if you search for them, you might get some more balanced feedback. There have been people through here that needed and did the revision. I can only say I've been totally happy with my sleeve and have had no symptoms. A lot of people have their GERD resolve after sleeve, too, though....losing weight helps a lot. Luck of the draw, I'm afraid.

    One Year Today

Great work! Good for you, Congrats!

    Discouraged

Sounds like you're mostly on track. I would count calories...make sure you're under 1200. Food journals are sneaky...particularly when we're busy and burning the candle at both ends....we can eat more than we think we are in little snacks on the run. Work on getting enough sleep...so important! Watch refined foods. I'm not sure what a protein pocket is...lol Watch volume of nuts....those calories add up quick and they're sliders so you don't feel full. Hang in there, and be patient:)

How bad is Gerd after Sleeve?

Many people who get GERD after sleeve end up needing revision to bypass because their symptoms are so uncomfortable. It is a realistic risk to discuss with your surgeon. My advice is to make sure you are using a surgeon who does hiatal hernia repair, who has some expertise in checking for them. My upper GI noted moderate chronic gastritis...so I was a little concerned about developing GERD. My surgeon said my hiatal hernia was probably complicating this condition and fixed it when he did my sleeve surgery. I have had no problems with nausea or acid.

How bad is Gerd after Sleeve?

I have literally had no nausea. Zero. Nada. Have had extremely minimal acid. Maybe twice, I was a little bit bothered by acid the next morning after eating late....and took an antacid.... in seven months. My doc put us on omeprazole for the first couple of months. I weaned off without issue. Sleeve is not usually recommended for people with GERD. What does your doctor say about your GERD after sleeve?

not enough protein slow weight loss?

My dietitian says 60g of protein a day is sufficient to keep your diet working and protect your body from muscle loss.

Heading out for 8am check in

You're gonna do just fine! When you wake up, walk as soon as you can. Blow in your spirometer as much as you can. Walk every hour. You've got this:) It's a very safe surgery and you did all those pre-op tests to make sure it will be safe for you. You're on your way! Exciting, eh? Best wishes!
  23. Creekimp13

    Have fears

While you're obsessing over the risks of bypass....(and yes, there is some risk)....it's important to also give equal thought to obsessing over the risks of remaining morbidly obese. Do the benefits outweigh the risks? What will happen if your remain obese? How is it affecting your health and mobility? What is projected for the future? Don't ignore the peril you are in currently....just because you experience more passively.

Heading out for 8am check in

    Woot! Good luck!
  25. Creekimp13

    Discouraged

And since you've given no information about your diet, exercise or literally any other details...neither do we! LOL If you'd just like some general encouragement..... I really hope things improve for you soon. Things that might help: Keep a food journal. Document everything you put in your mouth. It sucks and it's boring....but it's necessary. Move more. Challenge yourself to walk more steps each week. Don't go over 1200 calories a day. Avoid refined foods. Avoid refined sugar. Best wishes!
