http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/43411/WHO_TRS_935_eng.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y (this link works better) From Page 38... Based upon the data available for normal adult humans, protein requirement has a log normal distribution (7), as shown in Figure 4. This distribution has a median of 4.654, equivalent to 105 mg nitrogen/kg per day or 0.656 g protein/kg per day.

I don't use it in everything, but I LOVE curry and I buy it by the bag:) My favorite brand is Anthony's Organic Tumeric...you can get 2 POUNDS of it on Amazon for $12! Anthony's also does a terrific pea protein powder that I use a lot.

Rule of thumb... .36g of protien per pound of body weight for healthy maintenance. (Also...this should be obvious....but always talk to your team about making these changes.)
-
My doc and nutritionist say 60g per day is minimum....and getting it from plant based sources is totally ok. But DO get your 60g.....It's important to protect your muscle mass....because your muscles are the furnace that fuel your metabolism...don't let them waste. Also, remember that your heart is a muscle and needs to be protected.

My favorite thing to do with Chia seeds is Chia seed pudding. The texture is weird, but you get used to it....and then start to crave it. Good stuff! The basic ratio is 3 Tablespoons of Chia seeds per one cup of Coconut, Almond or Cashew milk. (I like the 30 calorie Coconut milk for this.) You put the seeds and milk in a storage container with some vanilla and some splenda (or whatever sweetener you like) and shake it. Then stick it in your fridge and forget about it until the next day. Next day...serve this wonderful stuff with fresh fruit, or by itself. Love this stuff! Eat it several times a week:) Very smart! Some excellent research on curcumin in cancer prevention and anti-inflamatory benefits (curcumin is in tumeric) https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/cancer/expert-answers/curcumin/faq-20057858

No. Read what I wrote again. I'm saying if people fail repeatedly on low cal and keto they need better advice than "you need to do low cal and keto." I absolutely agree that there is no "one size fits all" which is why the same advice over and over (even when linked to previous multiple failures) seems so tedious to me.

To help with the ignorance expressed about this topic:) https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106268439 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/active/mens-health/11736796/Why-you-should-never-judge-a-man-by-his-BMI.html

i'm not overweight, MIZ. Nor was Arnold Schwarzenegger overweight when he won Mr. Universe in spite of the fact that his BMI was in the obese range. My percentage of body fat is normal and healthy per my doctor and my weight on a underwater scale. BMI is a very flawed measurement...you would know this if you researched it.

You should ask your nutritionist. I ate bananas with no issues week three after surgery.

Weight bias and people-first language
Creekimp13 replied to Born in Missouri's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
"Did you see the diabetes person taking up two seats on the plane?" "She's not attractive. Too much cancer." "Heart disease people are sloppy and lazy. That's how they got that way." Obesity is the last safe social prejudice. It's sad. Worse, how self loathing people can be about their own condition. Never ceases to amaze me to hear people talk about hating themselves for having a metabolic disorder. Feeling shame, personal failure, etc. For no other medical condition is self hatred so taught. Obesity is no longer considered a cosmetic issue that is caused by overeating and a lack of self-control. The World Health Organization (W.H.O.), along with National and International medical and scientific societies, now recognize obesity as a chronic progressive disease resulting from multiple environmental and genetic factors. The disease of obesity is extremely costly not only in terms of economics, but also in terms of individual and societal health, longevity, and psychological well-being. Due to its progressive nature, obesity requires life-long treatment and control. -

Lot of people struggle with relationships after bariatric surgery because it's a time of tremendous change in their lives. Sometimes, we find our partners have incompatible eating and recreation habits...when you're working your arse off to clean up your diet.....it can be really hard to be with someone who can't feel like they've had fun unless it involves carnival food, McNuggets, or spending half the night drinking and eating bar food. A change of food culture, in itself, can cause a rift when one partners habits change dramatically. There's a lot of personal change that can happen as well. When people start to improve their weight and health, it can have a snowball effect. Losing weight might give you more confidence, more energy, more ambition to reclaim lost interests and goals. It might also set a new dynamic of outspokenness in a relationship. A partner who used to silently go along to get along might start speaking up for themselves. A partner who used to shy away from sex might find more of an appetite for it, or vice versa. A person might want more, or something different from their partner....and that isn't limited to the superficial. Divorce statistics are high because people do change their minds....no bariatric surgery needed. People do grow in different directions and become toxic to each other. Sometimes these splits are healthy and for the best. Changing your mind about a relationship doesn't make you a dog, it makes you human. OP isn't even married, yet. Engagements OFTEN end in a split, and it's ok and sometimes very healthy when they do. The OP is very responsibly talking to his therapist about this issue. He's concerned about hurting someone whose feelings clearly matter to him. He's reaching out to peers for support. He's not "a dog" and he shouldn't be abused here for expressing his truth. -
2018 Study: bariatric surgery only partially improves gut microbe diversity
Creekimp13 replied to Born in Missouri's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Daughter just stuck her head in here and I said...Have you heard of sea snails and waxy tree frogs for pain management? She had that greedy look..."Rudimentarily. Tell me more! Who are you talking to?" LOLOLOL I'm like....some lady on my bariatric board with smarty pants kids. One did his fellowship at UMich. She's like... I will look into these things! (and she probably will) That said...the reason she stuck her head in here...is that I'm supposed to be grilling salmon. Hubby cut veggies to grill and she made a sauce. Need to run:) I will message you! And yes...i'm one big poop from goal:) LOL -

Justin and Erica Sonnenburg have a microbiology lab at Stanford. Their research on gut microbiota is worth keeping track of. Their book is worth a read. "The Good Gut". -

Mine is a talented daughter, not son:) Sounds like you have a very talented son, though! A fellowship at UMich is quite an accomplishment! My kiddo did her undergrad in Ann Arbor. What a wonderful place! Love AA! She's hoping to go to grad school for medical entomology, and is doing mite research this summer. She likes bugs. Both macro and microscopic. The gut microbiome lecture she attended was with Justin and Erica Sonnenburg, and she got a chance to talk to them about my surgery...which I thought was pretty funny. Funnier still....she begged me to keep samples of my vomit during the course of my "weight loss journey" because she wanted to document what my gut bugs were doing. LOL. I suppose this is what happens when you study bacteria, fungus and viruses all day....you get a little...odd. Sadly, I've never vomited! Not once since surgery...and she's been very disheartened about this. "So, Mom, have you felt nauseated?" "No, you vulture!" LOL References to witchcraft are very tongue in cheek. Sometimes you have to make a little fun of the world we live in. PS... Speaking of such things, though....If your son enjoys haunted houses, Pontiac has a doozie called Erebus...one of the best in the nation:) Hollywood quality effects! Quite a rush...the easiest cardio i've ever done. LOL:) -
2018 Study: Unexpected changes after weight-loss surgery
Creekimp13 replied to Born in Missouri's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Way true for me:) Hubby and I are still on the same page....but my motivation to accomplish old goals is on fire. I'm going back to college this fall. Taking some classes I always wanted to take:) Taking a cross country trip with my daughter...just the two of us...her last summer home before she goes on to grad school. We're gonna to do a lot of camping, adventure travel:) Just taking some risks and living a little. It's about damned time:) -
2018 Study: Difference in weight loss between laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy vs laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
Creekimp13 replied to Born in Missouri's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Findings In this randomized clinical trial that included 217 adults with morbid obesity, percentage excess body mass index loss in patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy compared with gastric bypass was 61.1% vs 68.3% after 5 years, a difference that was not statistically significant after adjustment for multiple comparisons. We've been saying for years... With bypass you'll lose about 70% of your excess weight....with Sleeve, you'll lose about 60% of your excess weight. If anything, the findings of this very small study...confirm this. -

2018 Study: bariatric surgery only partially improves gut microbe diversity
Creekimp13 replied to Born in Missouri's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You can improve your gut microbiota significantly by eating fermented foods. Sauerkraut, Miso paste, tempeh (bleh!..lol), yogurt, pickles, kefir, olives, Kimchi....awesome natural probiotics. Good gut bacteria need fiber to live. Shoot for about 25g per day if you're a woman (more if you're a man) Feed your gut bugs beans, barley, fruits with skins on, raspberries, nuts, figs, avacado, veggies Most of all....eat lots and lots of diversity. When I make a smoothie, I go around the kitchen and add a little of everything. A grape, a few raspberries, a few spinach leaves, one of each kind of nut in my cupboard, a little piece of banana, avacado, a piece of carrot, Anything I think I can get away with.....that doesn't make it undinkable. LOL. Lots of gut bug diversity...matters. Sugar and processed foods boost populations of the worse bacteria, they'll crowd out the better bacteria...and they'll add to rebound hunger...because they'll get hungry and want sugar too. If you eat sugar and processed crap for a treat? Rebalance. Get some good stuff in ya ASAP. Put a pause in there and let your good bugs recover. I know this all sounds like witchcraft....but there's gonna be some amazing developments in gut microbiome research. My own personal testimony about this nonsense... I was stalled for about three weeks... 3 months out. My kiddo who is studying microbiology at the University of Michigan had just attended a seminar on this research and suggested adding natural probiotics to my diet (not the pills...just the foods) and feeding the right bugs with more fiber...increasing dietary diversity. Can't say for certain there's causation....but within a couple weeks of doing this, I started losing well again and have been losing steadily since. I really think there's something to this. -

Annoyed by doctors office staff
Creekimp13 replied to KennyJenks's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If everything has been done per your insurance company's specs...it's possible it could still happen. That said....you want to take two or three weeks off before you go back to work, so I don't know what to tell ya. Try to stay polite when you talk to the office people. Try to be understanding. Unreasonably angry clients, I've found....have a habit of getting "lost" in the shuffle. Better to use a sugar cube than a stick to move this particular mule. I do wish you the best and will cross my fingers for ya. -
Tealael...that was the kindest thing to say. Thank you for appreciating my efforts....and you're right...giving back should be a part of the equation for everyone. It's important. But I've made nearly 3000 posts. Most have been answers to questions and encouragement of others. I'm pooped! LOL:) At some point...you just want to stop talking about this shite all the time and concentrate on stuff you value more. Time isn't unlimited, and key relationships take priority. If you really wanna know why I'm calling it quits August 1st? My kiddo and I are taking a one month car trip across the US:) Girl road trip. I'm excited out of my gourd:) When we get home, I'm going back to college:) At 46. LOL:) My dance card it pretty full. Not to say I don't value all you guys. I've gotten back as much as I've given and I think you're all amazing. Thanks again.
