Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
Creekimp13 replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3988204/ Highlights High protein intake linked to increased cancer, diabetes, and overall mortality. High IGF-1 levels increased the relationship between mortality and high protein. Higher protein diet may be protective for older adults. Low protein intake in mice resulted in reduced IGF-1 and tumor progression. -
Carbs are important for good health and avoiding early death
Creekimp13 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/902112 MUNICH — In an observational study that used a one-time snapshot of carbohydrate intake, middle-aged Americans who consumed the least amount of carbohydrates were more likely to die from any cause, heart disease, or cancer during the subsequent decade than their peers who had the highest carbohydrate intake. In a second part of the study, these findings were replicated in a meta-analysis of seven studies with cohorts from Greece, Japan, Sweden, and the United States that included people followed for almost 2 decades. "Given the fact that low-carbohydrate diets may be unsafe, it would be preferable not to currently recommend these diets," senior study author Maciej Banach, MD, PhD, Medical University of Lodz, Poland, said during a press conference here at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2018. But, he conceded, "probably for a short time" — 6 or 12 months — low-carb diets might be useful for weight loss and good for parameters such as glucose and lipids. -
How did you choose a goal weight?
Creekimp13 replied to PopsFury's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm a very muscular person and BMI doesn't work for me. What did work...was body fat percentage found with Hydrostatic underwater weighing. I love my new weight:) I aim for 25-30% body fat. Am at the low end of that these days. My doctor suggested 170 as a goal weight...which I loved, but my body seems to want to weigh less. I'm eating 1600-1800 calories a day and having a hell of a time keeping weight on. Still losing. My doctor suggested my body might want to weigh 155-160. Less than i'd like...but i'm ok with it. Less than 155 and i'm gonna start eating french fries daily. LOL:) -
Love, love, love my Yonana's "ice cream" maker. You put frozen fruit in it...in particular, frozen bananas...and it make the most resplendent delicious frozen desert ever. You can mix it up with all sorts of frozen fruits, but in particular, I like being a purist and making pure banana....topping it with a little pinapple, some fresh sliced strawberries, sugar free chocolate sauce, lite whipped cream and pecans. This treat is legal on my plan and makes a wonderful compromise. Long live new habits:)

Yonanas.....it's a wonderful thing!

Well...that might pose a problem. That said....I've done frozen raspberries and chunks of frozen yogurt that turned out pretty terrific. And even my friend who hates bananas likes my chocolate "ice cream". -

It never fails. You mention you eat carbs...or more than 500 calories a day...and the jealous starvation hangry patrol comes out with torches...frothing and calling for your head. Well....ya'll enjoy that. I got bigger fish to air fry. With a baked potato:) -

Says the woman who "liked" a post of someone rolling their eyes at my perfectly polite post about why I choose to eat carbs. If you want to preach tolerance, perhaps you should show some and not be a hypocrite? Just sayin... Would it have hurt you to just ignore a post about eating carbs? Don't people have a right to read it and decide for themselves without you policing it and interjecting your defensiveness about your own diet? As shocking as this might be....the OP was not about YOU:) I promise if you want to add to the million other posts here about eating gross quantities of animal protein...I won't say a word. Your diet...your thread....your thing. Live and let live. You'll live longer. -
One weird food you can't live without....what's the strangest thing?
Creekimp13 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
WATERMELON. it's out of season and I cry a little every time I spend the big bucks...lol....but it's the treat I crave like nothing else. If anyone had told me I'd literally crave watermelon more than candy, donuts, fresh baked bread....I'd have said they were crazy. I bought a deli container of melon chunks and ate it in the car the other day. LOL. But I thought...ya know...this is the time I used to break down and get fast food...after shopping. It's a habit trigger. So, now I eat watermelon in the car after shopping. I can live with that compromise. -

True, I've been at maintenance since July...not long at all. Touche. You're right. And I'm also having a hell of a time keeping my weight up. I'd like to be 170...today the scale says 162. I have been actively trying to stop my weight loss for three month. Most days I eat 1600 calories, but I try for 1700-1800. That's a LOT of food when you eat mostly fruits and veggies and complex carbs. I'm not a big 'fats' eater and I limit animal proteins to 3 servings or so a week. I do get 60g of protein a day....mostly from carbs/plant sources. I also get at least 25g of dietary fiber a day. I avoid dairy. Am currently trying to eat more nuts. While I want to weigh 170, my team says my body might have other ideas....and to trust my body. This is probably really good advice. But yeah...part of my focus lately has been arresting my weight loss. My posts probably reflect that. Believe it or not....there are others who are coping with this issue. There are a lot of DIFFERENT experiences represented on this board:) -

I think there are a lot of crappy "bariatric medical teams" out there that are offering really God awful advice that is potentially causing harm and endangering people. My medical team thinks so, too. So what do we do about that conundrum? -

What I think is awful....is how people here are continually encouraged to do what doesn't work. How many hundreds of posts have we read that go like this: "I lost all this weight by self denial and will power and eating a very restricted diet....and I'm so sad and disgusted with myself that I put half of it back on. HELP!" And what do these people routinely get told here? Go back on your diet that was unsustainable...and didn't work. Try harder. Deny more. It's crazy. And it's unhealthy to yo-yo. There is no harm in illustrating a DIFFERENT path supported by science. No one is forcing anyone to do anything. There are and always will be a variety of options and opinions. -

My medical provider is 100% on board with my diet. My medical provider is also a leading university teaching hospital. If your medical provider does not agree with my medical provider, there's nothing I can do about that. We've known about the dangers of low carb diets for along time. Here's an American Harvard study of 120,000 people. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2989112/ -

Ate about five bites...but damn it was IMPOSSIBLY good!
Creekimp13 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Had lunch with my boss today and was put up to trying the Impossible Burger. This thing is made from wheat and potato protein, coconut oil and heme extracted from plant sources. Yep...a vegan friendly burger...that bleeds. Weird, eh? But seriously...when the coconut oil sizzles on the grill and sears this stuff....and the irony heme tastes distinctly like grilled meaty juicy goodness... it tastes amazingly like real meat. I took about five bites and was stuffed....but I took the rest home and my hubby thought I was kidding about it being real meat. He was shocked and thought it was delicious. Yepper....I ate a few fries, too. And about two inches of a diet coke. With lunch. LOL....all naughty, I know. But my weight is slipping down again, and I'm trying to get my calories up to 1700 or so to maintain. Life is balance and a good veggie burger for a celebration lunch is something I'm just gonna do now and then:) I had mine cooked well-done. The idea of a bloody veggie burger was just too weird. LOL:) Here's a pic of my impossible burger, and a video about how they're magically made! -
Forget Selenium Supplements...Eat one Brazil Nut per day!
Creekimp13 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
https://www.lybrate.com/topic/benefits-of-brazil-nuts-and-its-side-effects Just one Brazil nut contains 90 micrograms of selenium, or 129 percent of the daily recommended intake. A true Super Food:) Be careful, though....too many Brazil nuts can be not only fattening, they can have toxic side effects. One of two a day, is perfect, and likely will provide some great benefits. -

And yep, it would probably be better to break the habit all together....but my therapist says "baby steps." "Be kind to yourself, you're doing a great job." "Do what works." "Mindful compromise is progress." I like this whole idea of being nice to myself about food and not punishing myself anymore. I know where that leads. The new me makes mindful compromises...and is kind to herself. It's a good thing. -

It's not turkey...it's an impossible burger...totally vegan. But I swear it tastes like beef. Really good! Man, if I looked at this pic a hundred pounds ago....at what would fill me up...I'd have thought I was kidding. My husband and daughter are always surprised when I say I'm done. There's something that feels so good about eating something really great...and saying...I'm done. I couldn't do that before. I always had to finish it off. These days? I can say....five bites is enough, I feel full and good, time to put it in a box. There is such a victory in that. It's joyful. For the first time in my life I feel like food and I have a truce. I try to make good choices for my regular day to day diet...but on special occasions I just try to eat a reasonable amount of whatever sounds good. So far...it's working really great. Am below goal and feeling fantastic:) -

For all you intermittent fasters....Dr. Longo has created a diet that mimics fasting. Some interesting food for thought. https://ngp.usc.edu/usc-scientist-valter-longo-talks-about-how-to-live-a-longer-and-healthier-life/ As always....take what you like, leave the rest. Cheers! -
Carbs are important for good health and avoiding early death
Creekimp13 replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
There's a lot of science behind it. High protein diets are an early death sentence long term. High protein intake activates growth hormone receptors...which increase concentrations of growth factors...whose increased concentrations are associated with aging, diabetes and cancer. Essentially...the more you simulate those growth hormone receptors (which you do when you eat lots of protein)...the more your cells will turn over. The more your cells turn over...the faster you age and develop age-related illness. The contradiction to this....is older people. If you're 65+, your body is dealing with muscle wasting and greater threat from cancer. In this case...you need more cell turn over to hopefully catch wonky cells before they turn into cancer...so a little more protein is ok for older folks. If you want to read more about this, check out The Longevity Diet by Valter Longo, PhD. If you think this is crazy talk...and that all proteins are your friends and that carbs are the devil...that's up to you. Not intending to freak anyone out or push an agenda....just hoping to inspire folks to do a little research when considering their long-term diet plans. Obviously, paying attention to your program's requirements and working with your dietitian in the loss stage is important! This is more stuff to consider long term.
