I had read previously that the impact of very low calories on BMR due to WLS surgery is different than someone who consumes very low calories without surgery (as in the biggest loser shows)...it was written by Dr David Fung, the doctor who advocates for fasting (he said fasting had the same impact on BMR as weight loss surgery). I will see if I can find that piece. I did find this though, you may find it useful https://www.obesityhelp.com/articles/your-metabolism-how-it-works-with-wls-pre-op-long-term/ And this as well https://thefastingmethod.com/biggest-loser-diet-explained/

Anyone for August 2020
Hop_Scotch replied to MotivatedMomma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It will be here before you know it, hope it all goes well for you! -
Countdown is on...starting to freak out.
Hop_Scotch replied to LAJ23's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hopefully you have worked through those doubts by now. Each day we wake up is a day closer to possible weight related health issue, better to tackle the weight now before it does become a health issue. -
Perhaps it is time to develop some new get togethers, not all all of them need to be about eating and drinking. Fun times can be had doing other things that you all enjoy. Maybe a session or two with a counsellor/therapist may help you turn all this around, turn some of those perceied negatives into more positives.

Things I won't miss about being fat!
Hop_Scotch replied to ChubRub's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I do not miss gasping for breath and turning purple walking up the hill, that is outside my front door, when I go for a walk. I do not miss attempting to get out of the bath without having to contort myself. I certainly won't miss not going out or cancelling planned events because everything I owned didn't fit properly/looked like crap or I was just plain self conscious about the way I looked. I will not miss buying what fit (or fitted the best) rather than what I actually preferred to buy but didn't fit. -
I joined a gym this week, will be getting a program on Friday. The gym has distance marking everywhere, machines have been moved to allow for proper distancing, hand sanitiser everywhere as is disinfectant and towels for wiping everything down before and after use. Gyms where I am are only allowed to be opened while staffed (no 24/7 gyms for a while) and must adhere to one person per sqm. Only one active case in my state currently and masks are not compulsory.

1 week before surgery-My journey
Hop_Scotch replied to Finallyforme's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It is a powerful tool and if you work it well you will be able to achieve your goals, hope it all goes well for you. -
You only have to read about half the posts here to realise that is very common to stall in weight loss in the early weeks. Typically people have lost weight immediately prior to the surgery, they sometimes lose a fair bit of weight within a couple of weeks of surgery, there is inflammation, fluid retention, progression through the food stages....all this and possibly more plays a part in stalls early on. Given your lowish weight on surgery date, you've actually lost a fair bit of weight in the short time since surgery. Assuming you are following all your post op guidelines you will be fine, weight loss will pick up again when your body has adjusted a little bit. Note that going forward, as you commenced from a fairly low weight base, your weight loss is likely to be slow and lower than those who started with more weight.

Not sure how having several degrees relates to the discussion, but then I only have one.

Endoscopic Sleeve Revision
Hop_Scotch replied to CRNA's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Aside from possible low revision weight loss the ESG is likely to hold its restriction for the short to medium term only, you'd be better off considering a bypass or other surgical options. https://bmiclinic.com.au/endoscopic-sleeve-gastroplasty-faq/ -
I assume you had a number of appointments (including nutitional and medical clearances) over a number of months you had to meet? If you have met those conditions already, I am guessing any delays are due to covid. Have you followed up with the surgeon and / or your insurance company?

Exercise after surgery
Hop_Scotch replied to new_lease_on_life's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That is dependent on your surgeon, they will have their own guidelines, but generally walking probably is okay as soon as most people are up to it, for more strenuous exercise and weights/resistance training wait for the go ahead from the surgeon. -
Anyone know of a forum for those whose surgery did not help them?
Hop_Scotch replied to ab123.'s topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
And then there's me, I can't help myself when someone on my ignore list posts, I click on the 'see this post' most of the time, I don't know why I bother with the ignore function -
How did you pick your doctor?
Hop_Scotch replied to imlosingit2020's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wanted a surgeon who was experienced with working around failed ESG, so joined a facebook group for those with failed ESG and asked for recommendations from those who had an gastric sleeve conversion. From those recommendations I researched and spoke to staff. In the end I went with the surgeon who had excellent reviews but who also did liver transplants, I figured (rightly or wrongly) any surgeon who had the patience to do liver transplants would have the patience and ability to unpick what was left of the ESG sutures and anchors and do a good sleeve. -
Started preop diet today - any advice?
Hop_Scotch replied to denizzzzzz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No advice really, but just know that some people find the pre-op difficult for various reasons..fatigue, headaches, etc. You may or may not find it difficult, but if you do if you can get though the first three or four days the likely most difficult will be done with. One way to look at pre-op is practice for post op...most people have a couple of weeks of full liquids following their surgery, then puree then soft foods. Compliance with, or near compliance with pre-op will hold you in good stead for post op. If you lose a lot of weight pre-op weight loss post op may appear slow and lower initially but once the first few post op weeks are over post op weight losses are likely to be more typically. -
Burning when drinking cold liquids
Hop_Scotch replied to APG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you reported to your surgeon to see if it needs further checking out? -

There has been an increase in spam lately particularly responding to posts. Is it possible to limit the number of posts a new member posts in their first 24 hours particularly when those posts are in a language other than English or if it can be detected that the posts are exactly the same or nearly the same please? It is about 6.45pm now in Australia and a spammer/spam bot has just posted 29 posts (or more if they are still going).

Lap band vs sleeve...help
Hop_Scotch replied to Blyss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
When I first considered weight loss surgery, I actually didn't want a surgically option and in the past had considered a band or balloon. I let it go for a few years but as weight continued to escalate I started looking again. I found what I thought was a great solution to not wanting surgery...endoscopic sleeve glastroplasty, I wish I hadn't found it. I wasted about 18 months and a lot of money. Your BMI is high, if I were you I would pass up on the band but look to the sleeve or other weight loss surgical options, ask the surgeon what he would consider to be the best option for you given your weight, your health history, your past weight history etc. You may even what to consider seeing another surgeon too. -

Dr. Duc Vuong is my new (bariatric) spiritual guide
Hop_Scotch replied to Suzi_the_Q's topic in The Lounge
He is being a bit misleading, he is still saying on posts 'I am a weight loss surgeon' ' I'm a bariaric surgeon'. He was but isn't anymore. Does anyone know how many years it has been since he was a registered doctor/surgeon? -
The story is way too detailed, like when someone makes up a story/lie and overloads it with information and unnecessary detail in an effort to make it believable, but in doing so make it unbelievable.

Has anyone one had same issues I have
Hop_Scotch replied to Jessicaandmike3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you moved on from the baby food yet? I would think it would be lacking sufficient protein. How are you going with protein shakes? Have you tried protein water? -
After this evening's spam attack I am prompted to ask, I don't suppose you want a spam moderator? I am happy to volunteer particularly to cover Australian evening and weekend times when those in the USA are likely to be asleep. I do this for MFP where a post must be reported as spam five times (so therefore needs five members to report) before it is removed, however, if I report a post for spam the post is automatically removed for moderation.
