The situation in Australia may be different, but the surgeon or the hospital staff couldn't careless how I got home (or how I got back to the hotel in my instance), that's not to say I consider it bad, but once I was released I was able to walk out of the ward on my steam and wait downstairs for my uber. I went back to my hotel, and the very next day was on a flight home, I was delivered to the airport in the same uber.

Spacing between food and protein shake
Hop_Scotch replied to Pookyl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I forgot to mention, if I have a protein/meal replacement shake I use less liquid than required but add a thick greek/natural yoghurt so as the shake is thicker than the usual liquid shake, that way it doesn't go through the stomach as quickly as a liquid. -
Spacing between food and protein shake
Hop_Scotch replied to Pookyl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You are not that far out, and presumably can't eat much per meal as yet, I don't know know you are meant to get all your nutrients in three small meals (hence the shake I guess). I don't snack but I do have four or five small meals each day. What did your dietician (or surgeon) say about spacing out a meal that contains a liquid and a solid? If it were me, I'd have the shake first, wait about 15minutes then have the solid food....but do check in with your dietician (or surgeon) for suggestions given it is their guidelines. -
Portion size will likely depend on your surgery and surgeon/dietician requirements as well as restriction. I had a sleeve and as I progressed from liquids (where a lot won't feel any resriction at all due to liquids passing through the stomach quickly) to pureed foods, max was 1/2 cup if I was able to consume that much.

Post op weight los- sleeve
Hop_Scotch replied to MegiV's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
20lb is pretty good - nothing only about it. Some will have lost more some will have lost at three weeks, but there are many factors that impact on post op weight loss in the first few weeks. Start weight, weight lost in pre-op stage, post op diet (there are many varieties), gender, incidental activity, medication, hydration/dehydration etc etc. You are doing great and assuming you are following your post op guidelines, keep up the good work! -
6 days post op

Are you on antacids or acid reducers? If not, the nausea could be related to excess stomach acids. -
When will my brain realize most of my stomach is gone?!?
Hop_Scotch replied to AlwaysDieting's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Are you using small plates/bowls? It does help with the visualisation. Very small meal on a big plate or in a small bowl looks miserable but put the same meal on downsized crockery it looks a whole lot more satisfying. I am almost 10 months out and I still use small plates and bowls. There is a new normal now, small plates/bowls, smaller meals, waiting at least 30mins after food for drinks. -
33lb in one week is quite a lot, did you lose more before the gain? I am guessing you haven't overeaten enough food to gain 8lb, so it is likely fluid retention, that could have been caused by prior dehydration, hormones, too much sodium intake or maybe medication. Could even be your scales - presumably they are in the same location, on a flat stable floor (not on carpet), don't need batteries and presumably you are weighing first thing of a morning, after going to the toilet and not having any food or fluids? If you are going to stick around it would be helpful for you to complete your profile, start weight, current weight, height, type of surgery etc - it helps to give context to questions and helps to frame responses. Hopefully it is a temporary fluid retention situation, make sure you are getting your fluids, it should go within a day or two. If you continue to gain weight you should check in with your doctor.

It may be just a coincidence, otherwise, assuming you have gone low carb or cut out pretty much all carbs it could be 'carb flu'. https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/side-effects

Is there evidence that the masks contain PTFE? And what about peer reviewed research for the PTFE? Shame your original post wasn't upfront in your intention.
-
Are the gains temporay (as in gain a few pounds today lose them tomorrow) or ongoing and the 20lb you lost in the first week pretty much disappeared? If your weight is up and down (as in the gains are temporary) - it could be hormone related or fluid retention / dehydration for other reasons. If the gain is ongoing and you have regained a lot or most of your first week loss, I would be very concerned that you may have a non healthy fluid retention (given that you eating very little) - time to chat with your doctor.

What is it about protein shakes you can't do? If you can't stomach one brand there may be another that you may enjoy. There is also protein water, broth with added tasteless protein powder, high protein milks. You could also add tasteless protein to creamed soups. I imagine you aren't too far away from pureed foods? If so, you could try high protein yoghurt, cottage cheese as well as other foods that are in your post op guidelines.

2020 Major Holidays During Pandemic
Hop_Scotch replied to HLMaciejeski06172047's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No thanksgiving here but it will be a quiet/low key Christmas this year. Just my sister, her family and myself. Our mother passed away recently and other family will not be travelling here this year due to travel restrictions. Since our gourmet cook sister won't be here this year, we will be buying an already cooked bbq chicken and just roasting some veges, and for the two vegetarians making a nut roast. Usually there are lots of pre-Christmas dinners and drinks with friends and family as well as a work Christmas party. All this will be low key this year too. Very much a good thing as I am still not doing well with meals out and about (I need to remember small bites, lots of chews and wait awhile between bites). -

January 2021 bariatric sleeve
Hop_Scotch replied to Lissa83's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
What type of pre-op diet do they have you on at this point in time? -
Everyone is different, and what you can tolerate others may not and vice versa. Some foods are more easily consumed and do not cause us to feel restriction, these are your typical liquids, pureed, soft or slider foods. Other foods cause us to feel full or restriction very quickly, these are your typical solid foods as well as dry foods. Stick to the volumes specified in your post op guidelines, eat slowly and chew a lot before swallowing, give your stomach time to recognise it is satisfied before your feel full or feel the restriction. Follow instructions for drinking fluids before, during and after meals.

Taking the final step...
Hop_Scotch replied to tomd74's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Write a pros and cons list....hopefully for you the pros far out-weigh (no pun intended!) the cons. Remind yourself every single day of the pros. Have you thought about some counselling with a bariatric related counsellor or therapist? Hopefully they may help you work through some of your anxieties. -
10 weeks out, feeling hungry
Hop_Scotch replied to SteveAK's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
ESG doesn't remove any part of the stomach, including the part that produces the majority of the hunger hormone ghrelin. I suspect if you had lack of appetite initially its due to swelling and inflammation while the sutures/anchors are healing. If you want your sutures to hold/not lose their restriction you will need to eat to the volumes specified in your post op guidelines. If the top part of the stomach has been sutured properly this will help with the restriction feeling. Make sure also you eat protein first then any high fibre part of your meal, this will help with the restriction plus keep you feeling satisfied a little longer. As you will see I had an ESG in October 2018, I had that converted to an surgical sleeve that an endoscope showed that most of the sutures had come undone or loosened significantly. -
Regardless of weight loss surgery you (and the majority of the rest of us) will not lose weight every week or month. Our bodies are not machines and we don't work to precise timelines. You've lost 90lb in nearly five months, that is an excellent amount of weight to have lost in that time - even more excellent if you consider your stalls. Set yourself some realistic goals, know that you are not alone in achieving a weight loss every week or month, be kind to yourself.

Congratulations on reaching goal weight! It isn't necessrily the meals but an increased calorie intake that will help maintain weight loss/stop losing weight. Do you know how many calories you are eating now? If not, you could you a calorie counting app to find your current baseline. From there you could slowly increase your daily calorie intake each week/fortnight until you stop losing weight. If your current intake is say 800 calories, for the next week or fortnight increase to 900 or 950 calories? Monitor for loss, gain or stay the same and keep adjusting up or down until you find the balance that works for you. If you don't want to count calories, you could try instead by increasing portion sizes a little, but restriction may hinder that, so perhaps an extra snack or two during the day instead. Otherwise, if you are using diet products eg low fat products, instead you could try 'normal/standard' products, thus increasing your calorie intake without too much effort. They do say that most people will put on a little weight after reaching their lowest weight, so perhaps your balance may come naturally without too much trouble on your part.

One thing to bear in mind about chewing food and spitting out is the the stomach starts to prepare for digesting foods, stomach acid is stimulated. The stomach acid doesn't have anything to digest and the excess stomach acid may cause acid reflux or an ulcer. Obviously once or twice isn't going to do do much, if any, damage, but ongoing chewing and spitting may.

I can tolerate the taste of chewable vitamins better if I actually let them dissolve in my mouth while sucking on them. By the looks of it, it will depend on whether the capsule outer is a slow release outer. Sounds like something you should discuss with your surgeon. https://www.consumerlab.com/answers/cutting-or-breaking-vitamin-or-supplement-tablets-and-capsules/cutting-breaking-vitamin-tablets/#:~:text=Answer%3A,or twisting open a capsule.&text=Twisting the capsule will separate the two.

Seems to me the way to get over this is to see a therapist who has experience with eating disorders. Do it sooner than later, you may well be compromising your future health https://www.eatingrecoverycenter.com/conditions/bulimia/health-risks

I assume you are referring to a TORe - Transoral outlet reduction? If so, this shows that it seems to be effective https://www.giejournal.org/article/S0016-5107(19)32495-2/fulltext as does this https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31346750/
