  1. I've been up front with my kids from the beginning of this journey, but then I've always been honest about my medical stuff with them (partly because they needed to know what to do if I had a sugar low or something). I need them to understand that I'm doing this to take care of myself, to better my health and outlook on life, and so that I can be around when they grow up, graduate, get married, etc. I get the feelings of shame... on my bad days I feel that a bit too. Weight gain is a huge miasma of contributing factors... not just eating junk and sitting on the couch. Weight loss is hard, and the reality is proven in the numbers. They say only 5% of folks who lose a significant/large amount of weight will actually be able to keep it off long term without surgery. You have made a hugely beneficial decision for you, for your family, for your future. I think that's something to be proud of. You have made incredible strides in getting to this point, and it will still be hard work after the surgery. You need your family to have a good understanding of what you're in for and to be your support system. Hang in there!
  2. When I was at the bulk food store this weekend, I noticed some cricket protein bars. I'm going to give them a shot sometime soon.
  3. I was recently cleaning out my cupboards and found these shallow little dipping dishes (like the ones you use for dipping maki rolls/sushi in soy sauce) I forgot I had. I think they'll be perfect for the teeny post-op meals.

    In Praise of Salad

Glad to hear that the spicy stuff still works for you... gives me hope. And I will check out those beetroot chips! Thanks for the recommendation!
  5. Fluffy, I am totally digging your recipes! I love cooking and the prospect of living on mush/baby food for weeks on end was depressing me to the enth degree. Your posts have given me hope... there is flavour in Bariatriville!

    In Praise of Salad

I've heard that for some, the spicy is a no-go after surgery... kinda like eggs. I'm hoping that I'll still be able to enjoy Cajun shrimp or buffalo style chicken (not fried of course!).
  7. I haven't had surgery, but my two wee-lings (7yo and 5yo) are almost more excited about the surgery than I am. They want mommy to be healthy and to be more able to play.

    In Praise of Salad

I'm hopeful that when I finally get to the post op stage of this journey, I'll have some seriously altered tastes (goodbye salty-crunchy... pretty please?). I was actually just pondering the spicy food thing this morning (as I was adding sriracha to my scrambled eggs no less). I won't think I'll miss the junk food/crap, but I am concerned that I'll miss the spicy stuff.

Can we talk about boobs and bras?

I totally agree! I just had an underwire snap a couple of days ago... in the bra that I consider my 'fancy' bra, the one I only wear for special occasions and Sundays. They need to make them of stronger stuff for anything C or higher. The kicker is, I know that when one snaps, they all start to go. I was hoping to get to surgery without having to buy new ones.
  10. You know this, but maybe you need reminding... your body has gone through a massive trauma. It's in survival mode for the moment as you begin to heal. When the body is in survival mode it will hang on to fat stores like my 5 year old with his favourite stuffy. Be patient, stay the hell away from the scale, and love your new anatomy... British Columbia Sleevers

Canadians seem to be few and far between around here for sure. I would hazard a guess it's because our programs run significantly slower (I'm 9 months in and no indication of when I'll get surgery... still hoping for a 2018 date) and it can be a little frustrating to watch others get their surgery so much quicker. Olympics, Curling

I could live without any of the cross-country skiing events. Talk about paint drying...

    Olympics, Curling

Canadian here... The only time I actually watch curling is during the Olympics. I do follow the big matches (Roar of the Rings, the Briar, Scotties Tournament of Hearts, etc), but watching a whole game isn't my thing. In my husband's family I'm considered very odd because I can live without curling most of the time. All that said, I'm really liking the mixed doubles format... much quicker-paced, very intense. And we are considering putting the kids into curling next winter.

    Finally got a scale

This is something I need to get soon too. I started using smaller, luncheon sized plates a few months ago, but the think I'm getting good at overload them. Sent from my SM-G920W8 using BariatricPal mobile app
  21. The sleep apnea testing has me a little freaked out too. I'm fairly certain that I don't have it (I only snore when I'm sick or dealing with seasonal allergies, and the only thing that wakes me up at night is my husband's snoring or my bladder) but my nurse and my surgeon are pretty convinced that I do because I have a short neck. I just don't want to be diagnosed with something I don't have based on assumptions based on my physiology. (Sorry for the rambling comment) Sent from my SM-G920W8 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Valentine's Day Reset

I told my husband that I didn't want any candy/chocolate/food related gifts, and I bought the kids each a new book and some glow-in-the-dark stars for their room. Dinner was a fair bit richer than what I've been having lately, but I still managed to keep it within my allowable calories for the day (it meant a pretty sad little lunch though... lol). I even had a small dish of ice cream afterward.

    Who is observing Lent?

My family observes Lent (Lutheran here). This is the first year our kids are participating in lenten disciplines. Their choices were interesting. Our oldest (7yo) chose to give up sweets, which will be a challenge for her. Our youngest (5yo) gave up Star Wars. His toys, books, tshirts, and movies. It's going to be a long season for him. As for me, it may seem new-years-ish, I am giving up all carbonated beverages. I've been struggling for the last couple of months to cut it back and it's now time to do away with it all together. 40 days to break a bad and very old habit.
