    Bypass vs. Sleeve

This. If you attended an information session regarding Bariatric surgery through your program you should have an idea of the major differences regarding each surgery. Some ppl are not comfortable with the bypass as they feel it is more invasive but if you have a BMI above 50, are diabetic, have GERD, etc. it is likely that a bypass may be recommended as the surgery you need. Don’t make such a decision based on cosmetic issues that have not happened yet. Read what you can, attend an information session if you have not, and ensure you make an informed decision! Best of luck to you.

Being Prepared For Those Post-Op weeks:

I’m doing so much better today. I’m post op day 8. I’m able to sleep on my side some now. Every day I hurt a bit less and get more range of motion back. Tomorrow I go back on full liquids and I can’t wait to eat a damn yogurt and some soup. I’m getting better bit by bit and it helps to read the posts of those that came before and have been through it. Thanks again.

    Does BMI matter?

If you are willing to pay completely out of pocket for the surgery your BMI is not as important. A cash payer can go to a willing surgeon with a BMI of say 33 and request WLS and there’s a good chance the surgeon may do it. A good surgeon would still evaluate your history including previous weight loss attempts and so forth. Insurance companies have strict requirements in order for us to qualify for these surgeries, one of which includes BMI. It depends what you are willing to pay for surgery it seems at this point.

    Angry with myself

My surgery was rescheduled twice. The second time shaved four days off of the liquid diet for me. I was really worried that my liver would be too large, but the surgeon was able to do my bypass without difficulty. I remember asking him the next day how my liver looked lol. Get back on plan, you’ll be fine. I’m sure lots of people have a nibble here or there. It’s a huge change going to a liquid diet. I found eating warm items like cream soup if you can have them helped me feel less hungry.

    Shocked how painful

As a nurse in a hospital, this is unacceptable and needs to be reported to the charge nurse or supervisor. No patient should be waiting an hour for pain medications. So sorry you are receiving such poor nursing care.

    Shocked how painful

One thing I have realized reading these forums....we all have differing amounts of pain, especially as all of us have different levels of pain we can tolerate. I had a lot of burning, stinging pain at an incision on my right, but no gas pain as I was walking so much. Others had lots of gas pain, or left side pain. How I have measured my progress is this....Am I improving daily? The answer is yes. Follow any restrictions. Take your medicine as prescribed. You should see small improvements daily. I am one week out today.

Being Prepared For Those Post-Op weeks:

Thanks for this. These last few days post op have been difficult and this cheered me up a bit for some reason.

Yup. It was the scopolamine patch. My vision is ok now. Good to know for anyone else. Still having a lot of right sided pain which seems unique. Just taking it a day at a time and trying to be patient.

    Hematoma

A hematoma is a collection of blood in the tissue. You are basically waiting for it to resolve on it’s own. Take your pain medicine and walk and follow the surgeons activity orders. They can be slow to resolve, but it will slowly go away on its own. I’m not aware of anything to speed the process though. Hope you feel better soon.

    What was your worst day?

I’m day 5. Day four and 5 have been tough. Lots of nausea, pain is tolerable but I’m so nauseated.
  13. Thanks for the tips. Once I’m off of clear liquids I will definitely be mixing with yogurt or SF pudding. Its so difficult right now as I can’t really drink a lot at one time. Can’t wait for this part to be over!
  14. Well I’m 3 almost 4 days post op and we are instructed to crush all our medicines and mix with liquids before taking. One of my medicines appears to be extra super bitter and disgusting when crushed, almost making me vomit when I try to take it. So my question is this....What are your tips and tricks for getting through this crushing medicine phase? Ive been really nauseated today to so it’s been tough to drink my Water and such let alone swallow that stuff with bitter pill powder mixed in.

    Pain post op

I have one incision on my middle right that is a bit larger than the others. It burns like wildfire when I stand, sit, walk, etc. The others are not as bad. This seems common that one incision area will be worse. My surgeon said yes that’s the “stinger” when I told him about this one on my right side. Some of us are here pulling through with you, don’t worry!

    December Surgery Dates

Yes it’s been hard to post while in hospital. I’m not sure if it was the anesthesia or what but my eyesight has been very blurry if I’m trying to read. Doctor says probably four weeks for me off of work because of my job. Sending good vibes everyone’s way for their procedure this month...we have a bunch.

    December Surgery Dates

The first few days are the toughest. After 4 or five days you will get used to it. Maybe it won’t be easy, bit you will be used to it.

    December Surgery Dates

Well this has been a rollercoaster. First my surgery was on the fourth. Then it was moved to the seventh. Now today I woke up to work my shift and the office manager is calling me and they want to move my surgery to Saturday. Apparently it’s an elective procedure so I can be bumped all around.... I’m a bit stressed and anxious now 😬

What surgery did you choose and why

I chose bypass for myself. Although not diabetic or having gerd, I have struggled with my weight my whole life starting at about 11 or 12...maybe not obese but always a bit larger than everyone else my age. My surgeon gave us the information on both procedures and I researched them both and I feel bypass will get me where I need to be. Best of luck to you.
