Did You See the Penny Saeger Episode on My 600Lb Life?

Tell me about your eating habit.... Did anyone watch the new episode last night? It’s a doozy!

    Question on Feelings of hunger

This is false though. I’m drinking just fine less than two months out. Maybe not as much as before surgery but that has more to do with the fact that you cannot drink with meals. You also cannot drink before or after meals...my surgeon says 30 minutes before and one hour after. There will be those times you cannot drink before and after a meal regardless of whether you have a sleeve or bypass. This is more what restricts my intake than my pouch regarding fluids. That’s at least four hours a day I’m not drinking.

Normal not be under 200 pounds 8 months post op?

Not sure this is the right place to ask for money for college. Maybe try Facebook or Instagram. This is a bariatric support website....
  4. Same for me. I’m thinnest on Wednesday. Usually by four pounds. I’m considering moving my official weigh in day from Friday to Wednesday after seeing this trend for a few weeks....

    Question on Feelings of hunger

I do occasionally get hungry however it is nothing like before surgery. I do not yet crave the foods that caused me to be obese. If this is due to me sticking to the diet, being more low carb, or being free from most artificial sweeteners I don’t really have the answer for that. In the beginning with either surgery you may have an issue getting ideal fluid intake in, so I don’t know that I would base my decision upon that personally. As someone that started over 300 pounds as well, you need to seriously consider giving bypass the consideration. I’m sure either would work but I was surprised at the number of ppl that were receiving sleeves in my pre op class. I was the only bypass patient and was not the highest BMI. Everyone is different and you have to choose with what you are comfortable doing to your body. I’m almost two months out. I’ve had no complications. I’ve never even vomited. I’m not sure if I’m in the majority or just have an iron stomach. I followed my post op advancement to the letter and things have gone smoothly. ‘Good luck whatever you decide.

    First appointment ever (HELP)

I had a job switch in January last year and when my insurance switched to a different care provider I had to choose a new PCP. It turned out to be the best thing for me. My new insurance covered my bariatric surgery and the doctor I chose in my new network was very supportive of my wanting surgery. I made my appointment and on my first visit I had a referral to my surgeon, I did already have a surgeon picked out that I wanted the referral for. I was open and upfront with my doctor about how my weight has affected my life and my health. He was understanding and agreed 100% that bariatric was an option for me. Sometimes it’s hard to initiate that talk, and I think sometimes as patients people get defensive when confronted with their weight. I know I was obese for years and my previous doctor was never overly concerned, or was too concerned with what my reaction would be if he mentioned it. Good luck!
  7. This is so motivating. It is so easy to get discouraged, I often think of how much farther I have to go instead of how far I have come. Thank you for sharing!

    Vomiting soft foods

I have heard of this happening in cases where people have developed a stricture. Let us know how it turns out for you.

    Pre op

I paid for my room fee at my pre op appointment and received a 20 percent discount for paying right then and there in full. It’s worth being prepared if you are able in order to receive a discount if offered.

    What's for lunch today?

Now I can have salads again I had a chicken Caesar salad. I had some pre cooked diced chicken , toss with some romaine and shaved Parmesan. I like Marzettis yogurt based light Caesar dressing. I can’t eat what I used to, but I’m enjoying eating real food instead of shakes and such for sure! I made turkey chili last week and froze half of it for next week maybe.
  11. You should be fine. My insurance was BMI of 35 with comorbid condition or a BMI above 40. There were of course all the other usual required tests for approval, six months medical visits psych evaluation, egd, etc.
  12. Oatmeal is very hard to tolerate at three weeks unless it is super thin. For hot cereal try cream of wheat or something else. I did not tolerate oatmeal until 5 weeks and I have to be very careful still.
  13. It gets better. Hang in there!

    Diet years down the road

The last few weeks are much better. Once I was able to start adding more normal items to my diet everything became better. Around week 5 when I could add fish and soft veggies, and last week I was able to add salads. The more you are able to eat normal things I think the better. I have not eaten out yet, but I tolerate fish, vegetables, soups, salads very well so far. I have not tried bread, sweets, ice creams or even fruits really unless in my smoothie in moderation. I advanced my diet exactly as outlined in my surgeons booklet. I have not had any issues of intolerance. I have been either very lucky or I’m blessed with a nice stomach! I started my chewable vitamin routine as soon as I was home from hospital. I try to eat when hungry, but if I’m not hungry I’d rather focus on fluid intake than forcing a snack down. Good luck with your revision!
  15. Try purée pinto beans one can pinto beans, half cup of cheddar cheese, taco seasoning, a few tablespoons of chicken broth. Blend until completely smooth. This seems to be tolerated by lots of ppl, and it tastes great, like real food.

    Diet years down the road

I’m not eating every two hours. I eat three meals a day. I’m six weeks post op. I’m slowly working on getting my calories towards 1,000.

    Going back to work

I think that’s pretty quick for bypass. I’m a floor nurse. My company approved me for seven weeks short term disability. My surgeon cleared me to return to work after 5 weeks on weight restriction but Human Resources did not accommodate that so I ended up with the full time off. I am ready to go back. I’m sure they didn’t want to deal with me being injured at work after surgery. Even though it’s laparoscopic you have internal sutures that need healing. Whatever you decide, good luck....but don’t push it and risk injury!

    Not what I expected :-(

I’m curious what you are eating vs your activity level if you are six months out. Is there a chance you are eating too little and that’s the reason you are stalled? If you are exercising and eating less than 1000 calories it’s worth considering increasing your intake as difficult as that may seem.

    Exhausted all the time

It gets better. I was napping a lot in my earlier post op days. Once you are tolerating a bit more food things will normalize. Hang in there!

    Recipes/food

@FluffyChix this is the one I think you may be interested in... https://www.amazon.com/Bariatric-Cookbook-manuscripts-Bariatric-Friendly-Lifelong/dp/1548077836/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= The link in your post is the one I was talking about. It does have some good recipes in it for 12 bucks.

    Recipes/food

Yes I absolutely would. Both of mine I actually bought before my surgery so I had them to read ahead of time. There is a book I saw on amazon that I think is mostly recipes but it’s expensive. It’s broken down into the phases of the post op diet. They have one for gastric bypass and one for sleeve. If you can’t find it let me know, I will look later when I have a bit more time. I think it’s called the complete gastric bypass Cookbook phase 1-4, but off the top of my head I’m not certain.

    Recipes/food

Both books are great. The fresh start book has recipes for purée diet phase and includes a key for if the recipe is appropriate for purée, soft, or the general post op bariatric diet. The first 25 pages or so is general information regarding a bariatric diet and general nutrition information. The recipes are easy to follow and are not super complicated with tons of difficult to find ingredients. The weight loss for dummies recipe book has tons more information, about 100 pages or so in the front of the book is information, actually it’s 120 pages. So about 250 pages of recipes follow that. It’s full of useful information regarding clear liquid diets, information about all post op diet stages, reading nutrition labels, things to have in your kitchen, food safety, restaurant eating....really too much to list here. Anyone could buy this book and be confident after reading it I think. There are not a ton of pictures in this book, so if you need a pic with each recipe it’s not that type. I like them both but if I had to choose I would pick the dummies one. It has a ton of useful information. You could never go wrong with either and they both have nice recipes. I’m just the type of person that likes to have books in her hand still sometimes! Hope this helps!

    Recipes/food

I bought a few recipe books for post bariatric surgery patients. Fresh Start Bariatric Cookbook by Sarah Kent. Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for dummies....lots of good info in here too. I got both from Amazon. I found a few good recipes on Pinterest too but I like having books to look through.
