Trishe70 reacted to SusieQ_RN in Band to sleeve success stories, please.
Hi Amy... I am an overweight RN, and thought I was asking my Doc all the right questions when I had the VSG Aug. 1, 2013.
I was approaching 300 lbs when I had the VSG. I had just lost my beautiful husband of 33 years and was grieving pretty hard. After my surgery, I happily lost 135 lbs. When I'd eat too much, the pressure in my sleeve would let me know I'd better stop eating. Thennn I started acclimating to more and more to feel full. I was never told that my sleeve could stretch. I wasn't eating THAT much at one time, but I was "steadily eating" small amounts of cheese, rice cakes, restaurant left-overs, etc in the evenings. This binge eating led me to gain back 45 lbs, and I began to feel hopeless again. I was so ashamed that I refused to return to the surgeon, even though he had an excellent nutritionist on staff.
I saw something on Dr. Oz last week about Intermittent Fasting. I must have been living under a rock, because I had never heard this term before. I began watching YouTube videos (because I am a visual learner and need frequent reinforcement) and one of the coaches used the term "Bulletproof Coffee" I Googled this, and learned the creator was a bio-hacker from Silicon Valley. His "Brain Octane", (high end high-priced coconut oil also referred to as MCT Oil - Medium Chain Triglyceride) costs $28.99 for a 16 oz bottle at Whole Foods, but the less expensive brands of MCT Oil were @ $16.00. I deliberated at the register, and at the last minute I sprung for the Brain Octane. I am thrilled with this choice, for now, but I might try the cheaper MCT Oil when this 16 oz is depleted in several weeks.
The first video I caught on YouTube was a Tedx Talk:
Why fasting bolsters brain power: Mark Mattson at TEDx Talks -
Professor of Neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins University
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UkZAwKoCP8
Fasting 12, 16, 18, 20 hours... mostly while you sleep, has INCREDIBLE benefits. I was taught that Breakfast was the most important meal of the day. Watch the professor's video. He encourages his listeners to stop eating after 7 pm, and not to eat again until 11 am the next day, in order to give the body a chance to burn off stored fat (it takes approx 10-12 hours to burn off a typical meal). If you will let your sleeve work FOR you, (most Intermittent Fasters would kill to have the sleeve advantage) I think you will be encouraged, and you'll get to your goal weight !! I have only been doing the Intermittent Fasting 8 days (eating only supper) and a few healthy Snacks for 2-3 hours afterwards, then nothing until the next day. My metabolism has jumped into geer, and i have been a fat-burning machine for just over a week. I lost 12 lbs in 8 days, and this almost-60 year old woman FINALLY has hope again. I have a college reunion to attend in mid Sept, then I plan to start eating lunch again, or alternating my 12-16 hour fasts with my 20 hour fasts. The first 4 days getting rid of carbs can make you hungry, but swallowing a tsp of MCT oil or adding it to one's coffee or shake is so helpful. Good luck with your surgery. You'll do fine !

HI, I had my band removed Sept 5, 2017. I thought too initially that it would be removed and they would sleeve me the same day. I was wrong. Last Tuesday, Dec. 5, I was sleeved and so I am like 4-5 days post op. I actually was glad after they removed the band to have a little time to enjoy food again. I had my band for 12 years and with that I had 12 years of reflux, getting food stuck and throwing up. Yes I did gain a little weight during that time but the feeling of not being sick when I ate was indescribable. So I did not care at all. The first day post op this week was a little rough but I am doing well and walking a lot. You will do great and it will be well worth it when its done. Jennifer

I am getting my sleeve December 11. I had the Lapland removed this past July. I thought I would be good to sit around and rest, even sew afterwards. However it hurt to much to sit upright in a chair for about 7 days.
Make sure you can lean back in the car seat. You will be uncomfortable sitting straight up.
    Good Luck!.

I use Jergens firming lotion for the loose skin ( I don’t really have any yet but I’m being proactive) and I use Bio Oil for the stretch marks and it has worked wonders. Cheaper than mederma and in my option works better and faster

My surgery went really well yesterday. I made sure I walked a lot to get the gas moving out. I'm home recovering. The hardest part for me is getting enough Water although the gas pains are rough sometimes too.

Was sleeved 10/30 and started the Soft and Moist foods this week and so much happier. I'm done with Jello, Kool aid, popsicle and on to food. Went through our Kaiser handouts and The Idiots Guide, Everything your need to know about WLS, Bariatrtic Cookbook and one other and wrote down ALL of the ingredients needed for this stage. Sent my husband out to get everything and now have a good idea of what I want to eat for the three meals a day. I'm on this stage for four weeks, and needed something other than eggs. I had banana/yogurt smoothie today and it was OH.MY.GOD.GOOD. I don't think I couldl've been on the liquid diet longer than the week I was on it.

I was sleeved on the 27th and have been lost 17lbs so far. The puree and liquid phase was very hard but I'm now on soft. I'm now 3 weeks post op and for the past few days I've been nauseated. I've been drinking more Water and trying to eat more since I've had hardly no appetite and the nausea has stopped. It's been a struggle getting Protein down as the shakes are starting to be nasty to me now.

Hi all! I was sleeved on Oct. 20th. I was in a lot of pain after surgery and then fainted early in the morning the day after while going to the bathroom. I don't remember much of the first 2-3 days after surgery, but I think the amount of pain I was in was actually increasing and I was becoming less and less coherent. It turned out I had a bleed (my hemoglobin had dropped to 7.3 O.O). thankfully my doctor figured it out pretty quickly, and then they fixed the bleed on the 3rd day. From there I started rapidly feeling better! I was shocked when I got out of my 2nd surgery in 3 days and felt less pain than I was in before it, but I guess having lots of blood pooling in your abdomen is painful lol... I got out of the hospital 2 days later and since then I have been okay. I had some bad dizziness last week, but it turned out to just be a combination of dehydration and catching a cold. I had my hemoglobin checked earlier this week and it is back up to 10.3!

I'm on mushy foods now and have been handling food and Water fine (other than forgetting to drink which is what caused the dehydration). I can actually drink water rather quickly now, but I still just try to take sips every few minutes. I will start soft foods in 5 days (though I have added a few very soft foods that I didn't puree, like roasted red peppers and very soft white fish, and I am tolerating them well). I have not been measuring all of my food but I am getting a good idea of what 4 oz look like, and I just eat slowly and chew everything well, then stop when I feel full. One weird thing that I noticed is that I don't feel 'full' in the same way i used to, it more is like a feeling of pressure. I think this is because of the vagus nerve branches being cut. At first i had no hunger but that is slowly coming back, so I think the feeling of 'fullness' will too.

My highest weight was 265lb ~4 months before surgery, my surgery weight was ~245lb, and I am currently at 230lb. I think that most of what I lost so far was water weight, but one thing I can tell is that my face is wayyyy less puffy!!! I am also trying not to weigh myself every day but not doing well at it sigh

I revised band to bypass and am so glad I did. The bypass has a more natural feel. You just get full like a normal person, and I don't have to deal with foods getting stuck and all that. Plus, the weight loss is quicker and better than the band.

Hi! Congratulations on your success! (i can't imagine what it feels like.)

I had the lap-band 7 years ago and after initial success gained all the weight back. I'm considering a revision to gastric bypass and I just saw in this forum the procedure you had - the mini GP. Can you tell me what the difference is? Or why you decided to do the mini rather than the regular gastric bypass? I would really appreciate your insight! Thank you!

Please read it. If you have any more questions let me. I'm down 64lbs total since my revision. My weight loss is much better than when I first got my sleeve in 2010. I plan on giving a detailed update next week around my 5month post op.

How's everybody doing in here ?? I know alot of people had surgery in late October. I had my month but really 5 week appointment with my surgeon on Tuesday. I'm not a big scale guy I'm more how I look and feel ,but I lost like 20lbs since surgery. The first 3 weeks were rough mentally. Physically it was cake for me. Very blessed. I see the light at the end of the tunnel tho I realized exactly how this is gonna work between week 4 and 5... we absolutely have to eat healthy and consume nutritious Protein when we eat. Cause once you switch to food again after liquids you see how limited the room in your belly is.. idk about u guys but I've saved a ton of money on food these past 5 weeks.. but I'm posting to let all the late October's know it got so much better for me between week 4 and 5 and after I spoke to my surgeon and he said I'm doing great. Remember we have the rest of our lives to figure out how to work the sleeve. My numbers aren't precise but HW=280 SW-245 CW=225 GW-170/180 . I look at it like I'm half way home to exactly where I wanna be for the rest of my life.
