I was always a ‘big girl’, topping out at 265lbs in 2009 - when I had a gastric band.
Worked well - got down to 180lbs or so, and held it for two years - but got cancer. Lymphoma. They emptied the band because the chemo for my sort of lymphoma causes a lot of vomiting. And a year later, 10lbs heavier, I went to get a refill - and the band broke!
I thought I would keep the weight off, but no chance. Without my policeman, I was hopeless -because I hadn’t done the work to make lasting change!
By late 2017 I was up to 234lbs so took the plunge and got a bypass. I got a ‘fo I pouch’ version - it has a small gastric band attached around the new small stomach so it really stops the new stomach stretching. It cost me US$20K but I don’t regret it at all and haven’t for a moment. I set 180lbs as my goal. Passed it in 4 months. Set 156 as my new goal, as this is knot overweight’ bmi. Got there in 6 months. By 140lbs I was thinking ‘how do I STOP this?.’ But it naturally stopped just below there - this took just under a year.
Now I am a regular runner, 3 miles 3x a week and 7-8 miles every now and then. And now, 2 years post op, I am having to work on staying accountable. I gained 5 lbs - my surgeon said “everyone has rebound, expect 8-10lbs rebound” but - I don’t want that. I had tailed off the daily exercise, always reasons but it is about prioritisation, right? So now, I’m back on my great healthy wagon!
