Pre-op liquid diet for diabetics
molinomama replied to Picklesix's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, I am very excited. I get banded in 2 days! The clear liquid diet has not been that bad. Probably the only good thing about having a bit of a cold. My blood sugars have been great - I made sure the liquids were all low carb. I have been able to have 1 protein shake per day and am drinking the Atkins shakes - not bad. I would have liked a surgery date after Christmas, but this really does work well as I can take off two weeks, three if I need it and it is slow time at work and my kids are out of school. Enjoy your holidays! Feel free to talk here or send a private message. -
Pre-op liquid diet for diabetics
molinomama replied to Picklesix's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a type II diabetic on meds. I started my preop on Sunday. I was told to stop my Byetta the day I went to all clear liquids. I also take Lantus at night and I cut the dose in half and will taper it over the 4 nights preop. My blood sugars have been running between 75-85. They tell you to watch them close. If mine goes to low, I will drink some light apple juice or other low carb/cal juice. The big concern comes in after we start eating again, which for me is 4 weeks post surgery. Hopefully, by that point, I will have lost enough to stay off all meds or be greatly reduced:thumbup:. I encourage to ask alot of questions when you go to your preop - I was prepared to, and they had it all laid out on paper before I could start - clearly this is a common situation with banders. Good luck! -
January in Pensacola works for me! Happy Holidays all.

Teri, have you been on any Diabetes Meds since surgery? What wass your A1C before and now? I have been looking at this alot and most tell me they come off all meds right after surgery, with some having to go back on lower dosages when they start back to solid foods. Was that your experience? I have surgery scheduled for Dec 18th and am really hoping to come off all meds with the weight loss. All, Has anyone actually had a doctor say the Byetta erodes the Lapband?? I cannot find any documentation of that other than a couple of mentions on different blogs.

I am in Molino, north of Pensacola. My band date is Dec 18th by Dr. Lord at Sacred Heart. I have several friends who have had gastric bypass, but only one who has been banded. I would love to have a "Band Group" meeting. Do any of you attend the Support Group Meetings held each month at SHH? I have not been to one yet. What do you think about meeting there in January?

Question/Advice... No fill... constant chest pain????
molinomama replied to silry's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have to question if this is all band related and maybe you should let your regular doc determine that. If it is then obviously you will need to follow up with your lapband doc, but it may well be a problem unrelated. I think we tend to assume everything is related to our band, just like before it was all related to our weight. Good luck! Congratulations on the baby! -
Hello from South Dakota

Do you mind talking about your re-gain? I am curious if you can identify what you did in the hopes that some of us may try to learn from you. Also, where do you go from here? Do you get your band filled tighter or do you have it replaced or look at more behavioral changes? -
I am scheduled for December 18th in Pensacola, FL. It is kinda neat having it in December. We will truly begin a "New Year". I vote for either Holiday Hotties or December Droppers:lol:.

Any December '08 Bandsters?
molinomama replied to Florida Pete's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a December 18th date! While I will still be on liquids only, I hope alot of the pain will be gone and I can enjoy the holidays with my family. Good luck to everyone out there. We can all look forward to a better 2009. -
It's Been 1 Year since my Lap Band Surgery...

You mention your blood sugar levels. Is that with or without meds? Did you ever take meds? Congratulations on a great year! -
Should my spouse be my support partner
molinomama replied to najah27's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it is very important you have your spouse on board, as they are usually your ultimate support person. But for this initial journey into weightloss surgery, having a fellow bander to partner with makes life easier. I know my husband wants me to be the healthiest me I can be, but as a thin guy all his life, he just cannot truly understand what I am doing and why. Maybe you can find another husband who has been through it with their wife to talk to. Good luck! -
Type II Diabetes Management after surgery
molinomama posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am curious how Diabetes Type II is managed after surgery? -
I thought you were not supposed to use a straw as that increases the air and causes bloating? Have you been able to use a straw without increased side effects?

Type II Diabetes Management after surgery
molinomama replied to molinomama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much for the replies. I am hoping to have surgery the first of November and cannot seem to get answers about how I will manage. I take Byetta 2x day with Humalog 2-4 units, Lantus 80 units at night. My A1C has been between 6-7 for the whole time I have had diabetes - about 8 years. I am really hoping to come off all meds, that is my main reason for having the surgery. Any and all suggestions are really appreciated. -
What should I expect in the coming months???
molinomama replied to raprile's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Keep in mind you are the customer. Yes, this is medicine, but it is still a business. Let them know you need to put as many appts as possible on the same day. Some of your pre-op tests can often be done by your primary or at a lab closer to your home. Ask what your options are. When they offer you an appt time if it does not fit your schedule, do not be afraid to speak up and ask them to look for something more convient to you. They should not mind, your office should want to support you, so you can have the best outcome. Good luck! -
Can I ask how your diabetes is doing after your surgery?

fairly low BMIer... with hopes and dreams
molinomama replied to MiniBand's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had my first appt with the surgeon yesterday and hope to have surgery in the next few months. I am also on the lower end of BMI at 39, but with Type 2 diabetes for 8 years, can qualify. I am very interested in hearing from others with Type 2 diabetes. I am currently on Symlin and Lantus and really want to get off these. The surgeon says I should be prepared for slow weight loss and slow reduction in meds.
