    Time out of work

I was out of work for 1 week. I ended staying in the hospital for 4 nights because I was constantly nauseous and couldn’t really tolerate liquids. However, once I got home, I was ok because I was sure to stock up on all the liquids, broth, etc. that I needed for the first 2 weeks. Fortunately I didn’t have any incisional pain, so getting up and moving around wasn’t an issue for me. The gas pain and stomach spasms were rough at first, and they eventually faded after a week. FYI, I work as a nurse practitioner and I walk throughout the day to round on my patients within the facility where I work. I don’t do any heavy lifting or anything like that. I felt weak the first few days after returning, but it was mostly related to lack of calories and trying to keep up with my workload. After my 3rd day back to work, I was fine. I’m guessing I would have benefited from taking 10 days off, opposed to 7.

What did you wish you knew before surgery?

I agree! I’m 10 days post-op, and the clear liquids are no longer sustaining me. I find myself getting hunger headaches and feeling weak, as if my blood sugar is low and haven’t eaten all day. The hunger this morning was so bad that it woke me out of my sleep. I had to find something immediately, but none of the clear liquids helped. I sipped on some Ensure, and that really helped, but only for a short period. In general, my liquids are full sugar, but are heavily diluted with water, and I add unflavored protein powder to it. While I am way too nervous to try meat or other solids, I have found that slowly introducing full liquids into my diet, such as creamy soups, sustain me longer. Also, I tried mashed cauliflower with puréed veggies this evening, and it had really made a difference in my energy level and overall feeling of fullness. I technically don’t start the puréed phase until Monday, but there’s no way I could sustain off the clears only at this point. I will pass out! So for now, I’m going to stick with the “full liquids” and a handful of puréed items.

Had the sleeve this past Monday.

I totally agree with you! I was also sleeved on Monday and have been having similar spasms of gas/hunger pains. I noticed that I was definitely worse in the morning or after long periods of not being able to drink (d/t nausea). The emptiness had my poor pouch seizing up. I was kept in the hospital for 4 nights because I was having such a hard time drinking. After starting a mixture of meds, I’m now finally able to drink without vomiting. This is now my second night home, and the gas spasms still vary throughout the day, but seem to be lessened after drinking warm broth or hot tea. Also, I’m finally starting to have more flatulence (thank God!)...but for the life of me, I’m unable to burp consistently. I know that if I were able to really burp, the bulk of the discomfort would pass. Gas-X has been useless for me. I’m hoping that with walking and warm liquids, I’ll finally start having less discomfort.

    November sleevers

November 13th is my date, here in NJ. I’m excited yet nervous. I don’t have an official pre-op diet, but it was recommended to do liquids 2 days prior. I’ve been binging the past few days, so I tried to start liquids today and failed miserably [emoji30]! I was amazed on how much I wanted something with texture to chew on...and then I gave in a few times. Ugh! I’m gonna start fresh tomorrow, now that I kinda know what to expect. Cheers to starting over 🥂
