I am 3 + years post op and have maintained my 90lb weight loss since then. I could really stand to lose 10 more lbs but have never been able to get it off. My current diet consists of 70 grams of protein, 3 cups of veggies, 2 protein shakes and sometimes a vodka soda water. Up my protein? I don’t eat carbs…maybe 20grams tops per day.

January Sleevers..."Let's post those updates"
niceross replied to BINABINA25's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sleeves on Jan 3rd Starting weight 257 Current weight 197 Goal weight 165-175 I just came out of a 3 week stall and lost 5lbs this week. I’m still having some trouble with spasms and take meds before I eat. My vomiting after meals has finally gotten better. I’m lifting weights and trying to remember that my weight loss will be much slower now that I’m building back muscle. But being in a size 10/12 pants again is making me really happy. I’m 5’8 and was most happiest with my weight when I was 165, but now that I’m 40 years old, I think 175 would be a great goal also. My doctor thinks I should have a goal weight of 150. If it happens it happens. -
You could, but it may be for nothing and hinder weight loss. The old research states the body can only absorb 20-35 grams of protein in a sitting. But I’ve read research in other countries such as France who debunk that and the amount is much higher. Absorption depends on activity level, how much muscle you already have, age and certain hormone levels all come into play. I wouldn’t go over 40 grams per shake because if you aren’t absorbing all the protein, anything left over the amino acids turn into glucose.

I was so worried about it because I too, had GERD. It was so bad is caused EOE. After my surgery, it actually went away! I’m off all my meds for the last 5 weeks and have had zero issues.

I feel for you! I had a very rough recovery and a lot of pain in my abdomen. After surgery while still in the hospital, I felt very disrespected by one of my doctors who seemed to not believe my level of pain. It got so bad that I finally didn’t care what he thought and requested the pain meds from the nurses. I had a 3 day stay and went home having to take the pain meds for about 8 days. At one point I was so concerned over my level of pain I called my drs office and asked questions on the forum. I got a few responses that made me [emoji849][emoji849], and my doctors office just told me to keep taking pain meds[emoji15]. Turns out I ripped a few internal stitches, but I woke up one morning and had no pain. So it will get better! I’m 4 weeks out now and while I feel great, my energy levels are still crap. I can walk about a mile but then I’m just too exhausted to do much more. Everyday gets a little better!

January 2018 Sleevers- How is everyone doing? Please post.
niceross replied to Honeyswt's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved on 1/3. I am 5’7, was 255 at surgery and I’m down to 226 in 4 weeks. I had a rough 2 week recovery, but feeling fine now. I had a slew of health problems for the last 8 years after gaining 90lbs very quickly. I am happy to say ALL traces of the edema I had are completely gone, I’m off lasix and all my blood pressure meds. I don’t have reflux anymore either. I have 4 more weeks on the mushies stage until I can eat regularly, but I don’t feel restricted on my food choices right now anyway except for anything seeded and raw veggies. I am only able to eat 2oz at a time, but I supplement with two protein shakes a day. I have a few expensive bags of bariatric advantage left that I can’t stand anymore, but I really like the muscle milk with the 32g of protein in it. I tried Isopure drinks 🤢. Still on the hunt for a protein source I can add to my water that isn’t whey and has a milky taste. I have the flu, so I haven’t been exercising but still able to drink and eat “normally” I had a craving for something sweet, and i found a bunch of keto recipes on Pinterest that were sugar free and low carb obviously, my favorite are no bake energy balls made with almond flour and peanut butter. Crystal light is my drink of choice. No alcohol yet, no desire which is weird because I used to drink often. Not in large quantities but often. -

You could always have a Protein Shake, but you don’t have to do anything. I throw up pretty often but it has gotten better in the last week. It happens. -
6 day post op and I still very painful
niceross replied to MikaNVsg's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m so sorry for you, I had horrible pain for 2 weeks post op. I was lucky enough to have my husband take off work that entire time to take care of our kid. I called my doc and they suggested I rest and take the pain meds. So I did. I was functional for the most part but I did sleep a lot. Just when I thought I was never going to be able to do any movement that involved my abs, it just stopped hurting overnight. I’m 30 days post op now and I still burp down all my drinks, but they don’t hurt anymore. Hang in there! -
I am 25 days lost op. I was 252 at surgery and have already lost 30lbs. I had a painful recovery for 2 weeks post op, but now I am pain free and my incisions are practically invisible. However, in the last 2 weeks, I have been very lightheaded, nauseous for 8-10hrs of the day. My blood pressure is normal and holding steady. I drink 80 grams of protein per day (per NUT rec) and I drink anywhere from 60-80oz of fluids per day, it varies. Take all my vitamins. I am on mushies but I can’t eat more than a tbsp of anything at a time, and I vomit at least once a day despite taking 45 min to eating so slowly it’s not even worth eating sometimes. Does anyone else experience this extreme exhaustion, nausea and dizziness? Could I just be mildly dehydrated from vomiting every day? Losing weight too quickly? Not enough calories? On the outside I look healthy and vibrant, on the inside I feel like crap. I hope this goes away soon.

I’m going into day 6 post op and I have an On-Q pump that is almost empty and will need to come out probably in the next 12hrs. My pump only numbed the area below my diaphragm to above my belly button, and only reached 1 of my 3 lower incisions. One of my incisions and the muscle under it still hurts like hell. So I’m really nervous that when I take this thing out, I’m going to start having upper abdominal pain. Just looking to hear about your experience you removed the catheter and what happened when you weren’t numb any longer.

Sleeve Post op complications-not leak?
niceross replied to niceross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you all, my temp is holding steady at 99.4 and the pain in tolerable today. I’m checking it constantly, and as long as it doesn’t go any higher than 100, and I the pain is better, I’m going to hold off. I’m shocked at how rough of a go I’ve had so far, lol. -
Sleeve Post op complications-not leak?
niceross posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has anyone had to deal with any sleeve post op complications not related to a leak, or just had a hard time healing in general? I am 8 days post op and I don’t feel like I’m healing well. I have a significant amount of pain in my upper right quadrant. The whole area is still swollen and tender to the touch. Actually a bit more than “tender”. This morning I did a gentle cough, and searing ripping pain went through the area. It actually made me cry hard. I called my surgeon yesterday about the swelling and the general pain in the area and they weren’t concerned and told me to take my pain meds. But now that this searing pain from practically clearing my throat has caused me to have to lay down and not move, it’s making me feel a little anxious. I don’t go back in for follow up until late next week. I’m trying not to overreact, but I’m also trying to take care of myself. -
On-q pain pump almost empty
niceross replied to niceross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
And sadly completely necessary for me even could have used it up until yesterday. 9 or 10 days post op now and had horrible pain. Coming from the girl who had natural drug free child birth. I’m certainly not known as having a low pain tolerance. Everyone has a different experience. -
On-q pain pump almost empty
niceross replied to niceross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The shot that lasts for a few days was the plan but something happened that I’m not entirely clear about. Something along the lines of needing another and they couldn’t get it up to the operating room on time. I think the shot is what most surgeons are doing now. It was a massive burden to carry around. -
On-q pain pump almost empty
niceross replied to niceross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’ve been walking every three hours since I woke up from anesthesia. I’m...9 or 10 days post op and today is the first day I didn’t have pain. Finally. I only took Tylenol this entire time. Im glad I had it, although come to find out I coughed too hard and ripped a few stitches so maybe that is why I had such an unfortunate experience. How wonderful for you and the other poster to have easy pain free experiences! -
Great question! I haven’t thought about this because I don’t start taking mine until 2weeks post op. I’m only 7 days out.

On-q pain pump almost empty
niceross replied to niceross's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess since no one gets this, let me tell you how much I wish I still had it in. 6 days out, I guess I’m one of those people who have a lot of pain with this surgery. My on-q pump made the area more numbed than I realized. I wish I didn’t have to take it out this morning, which was another ordeal itself. The on-q pump is a catheter similar to a soaked hose with a bunch of holes in. It. The catheter is threaded into your incision at the end of your surgery and it continuously releases a medicine like lidocaine. You wear it for 5 or so days and when the pre filled meds empty, you take off all the tegaderm and tape and pull the catheter out of your body yourself. Then stick a bandaid over it. I got really clammy and nauseous pulling it out of my stomach. 5/10 pain I never knew I was in until it came out and wore off. -
I had mine on 1/3 and up until today, I wasn’t hungry at all. Couldn’t get my liquids in either. And then all of a sudden I’m drinking easily, 2 shakes a day, & jello wasn’t cutting it. I felt hungry. I had 4oz of an extra protein shake and that took care of it for me. For now. I’m on clear liquids for 10 more days, followed by 1 week of full liquids, and then 3 month of mushies. I just have to get to the mushies.

Post op- surgery was 26th of Dec
niceross replied to Cam Paige's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A lot of people will not feel many restrictions with fluid only as you progress along in the liquids stage. It’s not anything wrong with you or your surgery. It’s is how our bodies work. One of the reasons you may have not felt full eating the cheese is because you were drinking a lot of water with it. The pylorus is a muscle located between your sleeve and your duodenum. It contracts and keeps food in your stomach longer to break it down further before progressing into the intestine. When there is a lot of fluid introduced with food, it become diluted enough to pass through the opening faster. That is why the 30/30 rule exists. Don’t drink 30 min before or 30 min after eating a dense food so it stays in our stomachs longer and we feel satisfied. You had to do what you had to do, and string cheese doesn’t sound that bad. Glad it didn’t hurt you, that would have sucked! but I think once you are off liquids and follow the 30/30 rule, you will be satisfied and full. -
4th jan 2018 surgery post op 3days
niceross replied to Lumarsolxx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m so sorry you are having such a hard time. I know exactly how you feel. I just wanted to stay asleep for the first three days with the pain meds and not deal with anything. Miraculously though, this evening, I really turned a corner, like out of no where. My fluids didn’t hurt going down and I drank 7oz in an hour, and I can still do it. I couldn’t even sit up and get out of bed on my own up until this morning. It’s like someone flipped a switch. I hope that happens soon for you also! -
Now that I’m a few days out, I’m starting to feel normal again. Thank you for asking! No hunger, having a little bit of a challenge to get all my fluids in. I came out of anesthesia in a lot of pain but they quickly knocked me out with morphine. My iv bent once I was in my room and they couldn’t get a vein, so I went for a little over an hour without pain meds and that sucked! The first night I just told the nurse to come in every 3 hrs with the morphine. I have an on-q numbing pump also, so the area of my stomach is completely numb. I only have pain at my lower incisions, and now they are just uncomfortable. No real issues with gas pain, and my incisions are so tiny I don’t think I’ll have any scars. I had robotic laparoscopic. The days are dragging though! Never read or watched so many tv shows before lol!

Hospital bag suggestions
niceross replied to JealousMuch's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went home in the clothes I came in. Things I actually used: Hairbrush Earplugs Phone Charger Chapstick Things I brought and didn’t use: Slippers Pajamas Bra Lotion (can’t bend to put it on!) I was in so much pain despite having an on-q pump that I had the nurses drug me up for the first 36hrs. Then I miraculously turned a corner. I think it was because I took a walk every 3 hours before my next dose of pain meds. But the lady who had her surgery the day after mine had no pain at all and got out of her hospital before me. -
How often to eat/drink first week
niceross replied to tennisboy11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m 4 days post op, and I wondered about this also, but you will see that it’s kind of a constant, time consuming battle. I was encouraged to drink 6oz of fluid every hour. I ended up having to stay an extra day in the hospital because I physically could not consume more than 2oz each hour. They let me go when I could consistently do 4-5oz/hr. Now that I’m home, I split my 2 protein shakes into 4 servings and spread them out through the day. I always have tea and water within reach and just sip constantly. Water is even filling! I’ll usually do broth mid day and 1oz of jello twice a day. Pretty much my entire day consists of sipping something lol. -
I actually sent them home. The staff here are very attentive and my husband looked so uncomfortable in the chair.

I have a husband and one pre teen daughter. She’s still on break until Jan 5, and both of them were planning on coming to hospital with me and sticking around until I’m in a room. Hospital already said she was allowed in pre op & post op areas. I just don’t want them to have to stick around all that time when they could be hitting up fun things in the city. Will I want them there pre op? What about post op? Should they just come back to the hospital when I’m settled into a room? My husband keeps insisting they are staying, but I’m like why sit around and be bored for hours on end?
