Cooking with tofu
TakingABreak replied to TakingABreak's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm all about experimenting, but I need something easy that I can commit to eating a couple times a week. I want something I can buy local, and not have to hassle with ordering online, which you have to mostly do in bulk. I just can't see myself dong that with fungus protein, same with pea or brown rice protein ... unless I can find this Quorn brand. I figured, I like tofu... logical choice. I also eat edamame as well. Thank you for the suggestions though! its good to know all the options! -

Thank you both ladies for the facts of both sides. I don't plan on going crazy with the tofu, but I think there is a lot more research that indicates soy protein can lead to better heart health and lower cholesterol. So, again...if anyone has any recipes for tofu... I'm open ears! -

Sounds yummy! Thanks for the recipe. I've been reading that you need to dry the tofu and flatten it out for so long... ect. Do you do use any special technique? -

I wonder if there is any coloration with women who are also vegan and it is their only protein source. I'm talking about eating tofu, once a week. -

It’s supposed to lower cholesterol. -
I developed pretty significant peripheral neuropathy after I developed Diabetic Ketoacidosis. My blood sugar was in 900's by the time the doctor discovered the problem. I was almost in a coma. I developed the neuropathy as a result of this. Pre surgery I took Gabapentin for the nerve pain. I was on a pretty high dose, 600 mg X 3 per day. After surgery, the nurse was crushing my pills and I couldn't get the Gabapentin to go down without gaging or throwing up. So I stopped taking it for the 6 weeks that I couldn't swallow pills. Then I just never went back. Honestly, I don't see much of a difference with or without the medication. Maybe my tolerance had built and it wasn't effective anymore.

Its the one thing, the very one thing that makes me sad. I think as time passes, I'll forget about how yummy diet soda is.
-
As much as I miss the taste of diet soda.... I really miss the carbonation. Something about a good fizz hitting the back of your throat. MMmmmmm. I need to unfollow this thread... it makes me weak.
-
I don't crave it everyday or anything. But I can salivate over seeing someone with a foam cup and straw. A polar pop in the morning was my fix... But I'm proud to say...no longer.
-
I'm 5 months on the wagon... I hope I've beat it... but the cravings... HOW LONG DO THE CRAVINGS CONTINUE?
-
I am also staying caffeine free! I don't ever want to be a slave to caffeine ever again! I do miss diet soda.... ohhhh do I.... but I'm staying strong. Very very strong.

My program says to wait 3 months before introducing caffeine. I do believe decaff was approved during the full liquid stage.

I've seen this on an infomercial recently. Let me know if you do try it. I'd be mortified if it came off and landed on your shirt like dandruff.

@SGirl35 I am also curious about this powder. Please share?

I found these 10 bariatric recipes that look amazing! I've never used wonton wrappers before, but I'll be trying for the first time very soon! The chicken cordon blue ones sound the best! https://www.barilife.com/blog/10-single-serving-meals-you-need-in-your-bariatric-life/ -
1 week post op RNY- questions
TakingABreak replied to Origin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Within 2 weeks post op, I could practically "chug" liquids. This is a good thing. You may not feel restriction yet, because liquids run straight through, but once you get to soft foods... you will be reminded that you did have surgery. CONGRATS and hang in there! -
Not losing weight on pre op liquid diet
TakingABreak replied to browneyez42's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all! Congrats on the weight loss & taking the next step. My program was all protein shakes. There was liberties to add all sorts of things: skim milk, almond milk, coffee, oats, fruit, nuts, ect. I used Bariatric Advantage protein powder, because it was very low carb. Less than 5 carbs per shake. And I decided to only mix with water. Everything that I could have added would have added carbs and wouldn't have helped me achieve Ketosis. And ultimately, ketosis is what they want to see in order to shrink your liver. I lost 27lbs in my pre op diet. Now, I was a HIGH BMI, so it as to be expected that I lose more than most. That's another factor, its hard to compare your loss with others because everyone has a different BMI, and body makeup. -
I'd purchase a variety, not a lot of each, of drink options. You should have cold and hot options. The same goes for protein shakes. I found that the premade ones were perfect for after surgery. Usually the cost of them would deter me from purchasing the premade, but you drink so little per meal that one shake could last you all day. I stocked up on a lot of things that I never used, and won't use now. It was a waste. Your taste buds change so much after surgery, so I wouldn't buy too much.

Different protein seems to fill me up quicker than others. But I am 3 months post op, today! I can easily eat 4 oz salmon filet (which I made at home for the first time last night, delicious source of protein!) . Same with most other meats. Although, I don't usually have room for anything else. To get my veggies in for the day, I have to eat them separate than meal times. Depending on when you had your surgery, your stomach could still be healing. With excess swelling, your pouch is smaller than "normal" until about 6 weeks post op for Sleeve and RNY. I'm not sure about DS. I started being able to eat more, portion wise, at about 7-8 weeks.

I've been where you have been! Pre surgery, I had a bowel movement that essentially got stuck, FOR 2 hours.... I used an enema and everything...nothing worked. . Eventually my body took over and started contracting on its own. I ended up with internal tearing and MONTHS of pain as a result of this incident. I ended up having a flex sig procedure to try and find the cause of the bleeding, swelling, ect. after the incident. This is when they discovered the internal tears. From that point on, I take Miralax nearly every day and soluble fiber every day. Constipation is something to treat seriously! Drink lots of water, and I recommend Fiber once you are regular. Since post op, if I get constipated I take Milk of Magnesium. It seems to do the trick.

Primary Care Doctor Giving Mixed Messages - Feeling Discouraged
TakingABreak replied to Jill8008's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I freaking LOVE this story. I hate how you had to wait so long because of your PCP, but I loved the courage you showed to confront her & how ultimately you took control of your life and chose differently! -
My mom is coming on Friday. I haven't seen her since surgery. She has been a big supporter through these last 3 months. I'm very lucky to have had her. But, I'm afraid she will be disappointed when she sees my body. She always calls and asks "what is your number" and I tell her. She is very petite and thin person-- always has been. I think in her eyes 75lbs is a HUGE amount, and it is a big amount. But to her, will she be disappointed when she sees I'm still fat? About a month or more ago, I sent her a video to show her my baggy clothes and my newly slimmer face. She called me hysterically crying. She was so proud of me. I think I was only down 50lbs at this point. I had this weird reaction to it, because I thought maybe it was a fake reaction. I couldn't see this big difference in myself. Needless to say, I'm going to squeeze into my new SPANX and hope she's not disappointed!

You are correct about the 8 wrappers! Maybe if I just ate the wrapper I could do 3-4, but what fun would that be? lol -
Check out Kayln's Kitchen on Facebook or https://kalynskitchen.com/ Love her keto recipes! I tried this recipe last night and it was delicious. I substituted the bread crumbs for almond meal, and I used SF BBQ sauce. http://www.skinnykitchen.com/recipes/skinny-meatloaf-muffins-with-barbecue-sauce/

Here's the nutrition... I mean...not terrible. Not great either. Here's the thing, I have a program that I'm following but if there is something that is going to make my life a little better, more enjoyable... like a wonton wrapper, I'm going to do it. I don't think these nutritional facts are going to break the bank for me. I don't make these exceptions for sugar, pasta, processed foods, bread (exception of whole grain, once in a blue moon), alcohol, or simple carbs in general. My exception is a wonton wrapper. It's crazy about all the conflicting info. Even on here, I find people are ALWAYS saying things that go against my program rules. But such as life. There is a 1,000 fad diets for a reason. Every person, doctor, or tom, d**k, or harry thinks their way is the best way.
