Husband told people about surgery
KarenOR replied to M.A.'s topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I just want to say I'm so sorry. I would be livid and hurt. It is yours to tell and no one else's. I have told my immediate family, my parents and a couple of friends. That's about it. I would be furious is my husband told anyone at work, or his mother (who is crazy and I cannot stand, but that is a WHOLE other story). He didn't even take time off of work, because it was just easier and my parents are close by. -
Totally normal!

Am I really about to do this?
KarenOR replied to Klynngetsfit's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I get that, but no good will come of rushing the surgery and not being physically and mentally prepared. Honestly, if it looks like it will be too close, I would wait until afterward, as hard as that seems. You never know if you will have complications or feel like crap for a long time. It does happen. It certainly would be better not to miss the wedding! -

That's amazing insurance. The surgeon might have their own set of requirements though. You will not likely walk in one day and have surgery soon after. Just be prepared for that. My surgeon gives everyone a set amount to lose based on lots of things including liver size and blood tests and your ability to take the dieting seriously. I wound up there because my insurance was so dumb. I asked for appts with a dietician but they said no because I wasn't diabetic or had other co-morbidities except sleep apnea, despite a very high BMI. They said they would pay for surgery after 6 months of nutrition at the center. I went in thinking I would just have nutritional accountability there but not have surgery. But halfway through, I changed my mind because I've spent a lifetime of yo-yo dieting , I knew that it would just come back if I didn't have a stronger tool. Don't be too anxious about getting it done quickly. Start setting up good habits now so you are ready. -
New comer. Any suggestions/advice?
KarenOR replied to tiff86's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not a quick fix. It's a tool and you will learn to use it for optimal results. And everything else njgal said. -
I lost 20 pre-op but that was over many months and honestly I wasn't trying very hard. I was totally in the "last meal mentality". Once I started pre-op diets, it was over. I lost 30 in the 3 weeks after surgery but haven't weighed since that. I was getting too focused on the numbers.

I had to do 6 months with nutrition appts once a month, psych evaluation, endoscopy, several pre-op classes. I wasn't given a set amount of time at the gym but I was spending a lot of time in the pool already. It was more about losing the required amount before surgery. Then, I just had a one week pre-op diet of two shakes and one 300-400 calorie meal.

Let me add that if you drink it quickly, you can feel the back up but it goes away quickly in my experience. It's definitely a different feeling than food .

There is no way you can stretch out your sleeve with liquid. It goes through too quickly. It's the same reason that people don't feel full on liquids and wonder why they aren't getting signals. You need to keep drinking fluids to avoid dehydration so just keep going, little at a time.

Surgery 10/23 - Now on day 3 - my experience
KarenOR replied to ShelbyMoore's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry you are having a rough time. I stayed in the hospital so I wouldn't have to go through all that at home. It's one of the reasons I cannot even fathom this as outpatient. I experienced lots of the same, the bloating and hard time drinking. It lasted several days even after the hospital. Just take it slow and do what you can. It gets better. -
Everyone I know, myself included, had a 6 month wait, so 3 is awesome! It will be here before you know it.

Concerned about hair loss. Remedies?
KarenOR replied to PNWlady12's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Does it come out in chunks , leaving bald patches or just random strands. -
Potatoes were on mine too. Not my favorite so I didn't bother.

Ugh. I've been looking for an hour and can't find anything that fits what I am supposed to take without being huge or multiple per day. I found one that is a one capsule/day but the % were SO high, it didn't seem safe. One of the vitamins was 17,000% . Yikes. I really liked the idea of 1 per day though. Any brand name suggestions? I'm totally fine swallowing capsules at 4 weeks out.

How often did/ do you vomit post-surgery?
KarenOR replied to MN_Meg770's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
4 weeks out and never. I had anti nausea stuff in my IV and a patch behind my ear. -
Thinking about weightloss surgery but I have an Issue.
KarenOR replied to WIndowsX.P's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
There is no exercise required per se in the pre-op. I 100% agree with the poster that said GO TO THE DOCTOR. If nothing else, then let them do a stress test for piece of mind. I did that a few years ago. Everything was fine and what I was feeling was anxiety. You can't know unless you go! -
I haven't told anyone
KarenOR replied to sleevedAndRelieved's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's an awful lot of power to give a therapist. I would be livid. There are plenty of other sources of support, like local groups and online. -
I turned 50 this summer. I spent 40 years yo-yo dieting and destroying my metabolism in the process. I just had to stop the madness. I went in thinking I would just use the nutrition services (after my stupid insurance wouldn't pay for a nutritionist because I wasn't diabetic or had other issues) but through the course of those 6 months came to realize that the only want to get it to stop was to have a more permanent tool. It was just gets harder and harder. I got sleeved on 9/27. It hasn't been a breeze but no major complications. I suspect I will wish I had doe it sooner.

All in One vitamins
KarenOR replied to tahoegirl96118's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All in one meaning what? Calcium can't be taken with the multi because it won't absorb. -
Wish I was having problems eating food
KarenOR replied to Sleeved in DFW :-)'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not really eating solid food yet, but I've been hungry since day 2. Not head hunger, Real frickin hunger! -
Need a surgery buddy..Sept 26tg
KarenOR replied to traceybishop1977's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine was 9/27. There were no drains. It was about an hour because apparently I had a lot of scar tissue from my 20 year prior gallbladder surgery. -
I’m in need of a sleeve buddy!!!
KarenOR replied to aarbearsmomma's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine was 9/27, too! -
Wow!!! How much did you lose in what time frame?

I had the opposite experience in the hospital. I had great nurses, great staff. Was pretty comfortable. Having the adjustable bed was great. I was up and walking a few hours after . Gas wasn't horrible but acid was. Overall my hospital experience was great. I had IV medication for nausea and stopped the morphine pretty quickly because it was giving me the shakes and making my teeth chatter. I only took pain meds at home a few days but turns out they bruised my rib so most of my pain was from that. Good luck! What else do you want to know??
-
Can some people let me know how long you were in the Hospital?
KarenOR replied to sug7768's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I should add, I cannot even fathom it as outpatient. Between the leak test and all the other stuff. I would be terrified to be home., having an adjustable bed was excellent.
