Good luck to u darlin. Stopping smoking is unbelievably hard, especially if u truly still enjoy it and aren't sick of it yet, as i wasn't. And now without food to occupy my time, i want cigs more than ever! I might try vaping, but i was curious what about cigs is bad for healing? Is it all the chemicals and tar and smoke? Or is it the nicotine?
-
Wow, good for u for saving the cig money in an acct for ur daughter. Thats fantastic! Can u believe these days cigs are $7-$9 a pack?! Its getting outrageous in price! Yes, ur right, I can smell a smoker like a mile away it seems. When i was a smoker, i thought i could blow the smoke downwind or things like that and i wouldnt stink when i went back inside. Obviously i know different now. What about cigs are bad for us post RNY? Is it the tar and chemicals or is it the nicotine? Wonder if vapeing would cause the same risk/issues?

Why are diets so different?
Amburmist replied to Neens's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I dont think ur understanding the question. Im not asking about what doctors feel about what foods are ok to eat based on whats best in a diet plan in the long run. I get the whole "its anyones best guess on what diet works". Im talking about a standard of when doctors allow the RNY patient to begin incorporating different foods into their new anatomy. As i gave in my example preciously, some plans allow pork and beef as soon as chicken and fish, while others can have it but not for 3 or 6 months post op. Or nuts. Same delay their patients while others allow it fairly soon postop. And not because the doc cares how it fares within a diet plan, but because they want the new anatomy to wait a bit before eating courser, sharper, denser foods. Things like that. Im positive there are studies that show averages, averages of how long the body takes to heal after RNY surgery. So again, why would doc A say not to eat this food until 6 weeks out, while doc B says its ok to eat it after 3 weeks out. Not a question of fact based diets. -
When will hunger go away?
Amburmist replied to LoBMI VSGguy46's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good points. I am definitely eating less and feeling satiated longer than preop, so some things have definitely gotten better. Most things, actually. I agree also that i just dont think ill ever be a person who "forgets" to eat and has to set alarms. People around me are always, seemingly, eating and i still have to cook dinner for the fam, so foods always around me. Im more able to resist now, though. Resist the Mcdonalds they may bring home or resist the yummy food im cooking for my boys, but cant have anymore. For that, im grateful! -

Interesting, really? Hmm, maybe ill give that a try. Thanks for the thought. -
Thank u! I think I'm like ur friend. I took Chantix before surgery and stopped smoking about a month preop, but then i stopped the meds. Now here i am post op and craving a smoke. I shouldn't have stopped chantix so soon. I wonder if i can start the program over from the first step, even though I'm not smoking? Hmmm. The problem with me is I truly loved smoking. Started at 11yrs old, stopped cold turkey for about 7 yrs in my 20s to have a child, then started again and never stopped. Ya, the smell all over ur clothes sucks and going outside in the elements sucks, and the bad lungs u could get would suck, but, i just really loved and enjoyed my cigs. They calmed me, made me not eat, were great socially with friends... I miss all that. Oh oh oh, and after a meal..OMG!! The best! But ur right, I'm NOT going to smoke right now, I'm going to resist the urge because I want this surgery to work more than i want a cig, and i want one bad!! [emoji4]

When will hunger go away?
Amburmist replied to LoBMI VSGguy46's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I guess I went into this thinking (based on things i read and was told) that the grehlin levels would be so low that i WOULDN'T feel hunger generally for at leat 6 months post, and that i would need to combat "head hunger". Then i was given a list of signs that would tell me my body was actually hungry, like stomach grumbling or difficulty concentrating or empty feeling in belly, etc. And if i didn't have one of those signs, then it was "head hunger"...and go drink water! But, it seems that I'm not the only one who still has hunger. But what about those that say they're truly NOT hungry anymore? What about their procedure is different than mine? Wonder what makes their feelings of hunger now so much less than mine? -
How close do you follow your dr's Post Surgery plan?

I believe if u have a leak, u should know pretty quickly. The pain would be fairly immediate, I'd think. Anyone believe or know differently? I'm just guessing that if ur stomach were to tear and begin leaking into ur body, u would know PDQ! Honestly tho, by the 2nd week, ur not going to tear ur stomach just by eating chicken breast and chili. If u overstuffed urself like we used to do PREsurgery, then maybe, but u should be fine. Heck, some people's docs have them eating exactly what u ate and more 2 weeks post surgery! So ur fine! [emoji4] -
Why are diets so different?
Amburmist replied to Neens's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I get what ur asking tho. Not so much a question about a universal diet, but some sort of uniform plan on when an RNY patient is to start incorporating the different kinds of foods and testing their new internal setups. Of course theres no 'one size fits all' kind of diet, but medically speaking, why isn't there a standard between all of our docs of when to start incorporating these foods into our newly formed anatomy? We're all the same species (humans[emoji6]), and with some exceptions, we all have with the same anatomies, and roughly the same healing rates, so why are some docs allowing their RNY patients have solid foods after 2 weeks and others make their patients wait 4-6 weeks? THAT'S the part i don't get. I'm sure there's been studies about, on average, how long it takes for an RNY to heal, how much content and how long after surgery our new tummys can take, etc...right? So why the big timing differences? I think this is basically what the OP was asking. And I'm curious too. We could all speculate, but i don't think any of us really knows the answer. It's just an interesting observation to wonder, i think. -
I dont know about sleevers but definitely not for bypassers.

Thx@berry78. Good info. In my research, i also saw that alcohol can cause hypoglycemia and failure to absorb the critical vitamins we now need. Of course, this is from lots of drinking, but ppl be aware. Heres the info i read with that data http://bariatrictimes.com/alcohol-and-the-gastric-bypass-patient/ -
Sounds promising. Its gotta stay as an injection, though, because its time or extended release and as a pill, wouldnt work for us bypassers. As an injection upon closing of the wounds or at the end of surgery while still under anesthesia, it sounds great!

Was it in ur plan to only eat for 20 mins? Whatever doesnt fit in 20 mins woyld be saved for next time? It IS interesting how everyones plans can be so different.

I guess i thought the alcohol was worse than ur making it seem@berry78. Perhaps the info i was given was wrong? Ive been told that with bypass, alcohol is especially bad for us because we no longer have the stomach to metabolize the alcohol so its entirely upon the liver now to do that, which its not designed to do, which is why cirrhosis of the liver is something like 4-5 times more likely for bypass patients who drink. I imagine theres quantity and frequency dependencies that go into that stat, but drinking nonetheless for bypass patients regularly is playing liver roulette. No? As for coffee, i agree, no big deal. My team is more concerned about caffeine being a diuretic, so thats why they dont want me drinking caffeine until many weeks out. -
When will hunger go away?
Amburmist replied to LoBMI VSGguy46's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm about 4 weeks out...and still feel hunger. Don't know if it's "brain hunger" or real hunger but it's hunger all the same to me. I've been saying that I don't think that part of the surgery will be happening with me, so i guess it's just something I'll have to overcome now, with my new WLS tool. Which, to be honest, IS helping. Like someone else above said, if i was only eating ~800 or so calories prior to surgery, I'd be chewing my arm off at this point! So, hunger or not, I dont want to fail so I'm going to do my best to ignore it. That's all we can do for those of us who still feel hunger. But I'm with u...everyone was saying the feeling of hunger just eventually goes away...poof...gone... Uh-huh, ya sure, not for me! Lol. I guess they left that part in me! [emoji6] -

Diarrhea after bypass surgery.
Amburmist replied to woodsgal79's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How long ago did u have the procedure? Oddly enough, for the past week (since last Monday, 16th), i have had upset stomach and diahrea. Regular diarhea, like every 2-3 hrs like u. Im beyond exhausted at this point. Im 30 days post op, so i don't think it has to do with my procedure...but I'm starting to question. I haven't been able to eat anything. I'm only able to drink my Premiers but even that's starting to become less and less. I've had so much diarhea and upset stomach that I've lost 11lbs since this all started last monday. Not good. Stomach bug or procedure related? Ive even tried Pepto and Imodium, neither has worked to stop this craziness. [emoji40][emoji30][emoji13]🤤 Thoughts anyone? -

Amburmist replied to SassyScienceNerd's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well, I know people do start smoking again after surgery, i guess either no ones brave enough to admit it here or no one has on this thread. I haven't picked up a cig again...yet...but i sure am craving it. Even moreso because it used to help me NOT eat and for whatever reason, i haven't yet gotten the "forget to eat" side effect of this surgery! -

Congrats! What was ur weight on surgery day? -
I actually dont know what ur referring to with the 1 oz cups for drinking. Ive always had a water bottle and drank what i could. Maybe its something ur team gives to help u drink slowly postop, but get in all ur water ounces. But so u know, u can have a water bottle and take the drinking slowly with that if u want to, especially if ur going out.

Wow! Congrats on stopping! Keep up the good work! Cold turkey?
