Freaking myself out
GwennyPenny replied to Laciesca's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I came out of hospital 5kg or about 12lbs heavier than when I went in. They pump a lot of fluid in our bodies and it takes a while for that a swelling etc to go down. After about a week it started dropping fast. I am 12 weeks out and had two major stalls due to further surgeries and constipation but I have still lost 100lbs. Don't be discouraged stick to the plan and trust the process. The 4oz people are talking about is when you get to puree soft or real food. 4oz of protein like fish or chicken can fill you up quickly. Drinks and soups are different because they are thin they just constantly trickle though. Don't be tempted to jump ahead or miss a step because you need time for your stomach to heal whether it was sleeve or bypass. Good luck guys hang in there! My story... bare with me!
GwennyPenny replied to TakingABreak's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was given pain relief in hospital but then I was already on it for arthritis. They mostly did paracetamol in the drip but I take Targin and Endone daily. You can't have NSAIDs due to ulcer risk. Things like endone which is oxycodone or codeine can cause constipation which they did with me. Pre surgery no problem post surgery as long as I am on the pain meds I need a laxative drink. For the trip home something simple like Tylenol or Paracetamol should be OK. I'd check that out. Vitamins. I take BNMulti which is a chewable bariatric vitamin. Calcium citrate and D. 948 mg cal 200mg D also chewable. I also have Vit B injections which I've had for a long time. I recently found out because I developed kidney stones week 7 that you should take the calcium directly after or with food. If you have them by themselves the residue attaches to the kidney which can cause calcium oxalate stones but with food it digests with the food molecules. I had five calcium oxalate stones! Surgery date 11/27; Surgeon says if liver too fatty, they will do sleeve instead of bypass. Anyone encounter this before?
GwennyPenny replied to em1's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Not personally but I know that's why you have to stick religiously to the pre-op diet. If the liver is fatty it will be inflamed and larger than usual. To do the bypass they need to be able to work around it to re-route everything so it's important that it's flat. That said I had adhesions which were expected but once in there he realised my liver spleen and stomach were fused together but he still managed to do it after spending the first 2 1/2 hours separating the organs so I wouldn't worry too much. They will work it out Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Plateaued after losing 130lbs
GwennyPenny replied to emmybaby666's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was watching a you tube video of Dr Vuong that someone put me on to. I don't agree with everything he suggests as its contrary to my surgeon and Dietitian but he did point out the various stages people stall. 3 weeks was one 7 months was another. He said it was common to stall for even a month or two. He has a diet plan for his patients but it's not for me but it might suit you. He's easy to find just type the name in you tube. I have stalled a couple if times and upped the protein and lowered carbs and kickstarted it. Seems to work. I work til 8pm so I try to have easy options during the week and cook and freeze a few things on the weekend. Doesn't take long just an hour or so on a sat or sun. Congratulations with the weight-loss so far you'll get there [emoji4] Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I took clothes but didn't need them other than underwear as I wore a hospital gown. The things I found useful: my own toiletries travel sized shampoo toothpaste etc. A hair brush and small mirror to do it while in bed. Lip balm and moisturizer are a must. You're not drinking much and the air-con dries out your face and lips. A good pair of slippers or easy shoes as they will encourage you to walk. A robe if it's cold which I forgot! Phone/tablet/laptop whichever with lots of data if they don't have Wi-Fi earphones and charger. I took a book of crosswords didn't look at it. I did take a notebook and pen and used them. Took makeup didn't use it just moisturizer and lip balm. Any paperwork or scans they ask you to bring. ID insurance details. Family contact numbers. A sense of humour and a half cup of bravery Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

I had mine around the same time and I have had two stalls lasting a week or more. Most people suggest increasing protein and lowering carbs. Protein first. I just stuck to my program and trusted the process. I had further surgeries and that caused small stops due to fluid constipation etc the last surgery was last week. Just starting to move again. I've lost about 100lbs since Aug which I'm happy with. I wasn't quite so happy about constipation and kidney stones lol Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

For the liquid stage I had broth. Soups with meat pureed and then thinned with extra stock. Yoghurt thin scrambled egg. Pureed fruit. Then moved to puree. Still had pureed soup like chicken and corn, lamb and barley beef things like that. I poached white fish and made a white sauce and pureed pureed vege on the side. Roast meats chicken lamb beef pureed with low carb gravy. Poached egg. Tuna or salmon mashed sardines in sauce mashed on cruskits. (cruskits dissolve) cottage cheese hummus yoghurt. I drink protein water instead of plain that usually adds around 30-40 gas per day. Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app -
What can possibly go wrong?
GwennyPenny replied to bellabloom's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I sometimes eat meat on its own. I buy these protein bites that are soft little pieces of chicken in a 70gm snack pack. I don't have anything with them. I drink protein water instead of plain. I figured if I have to drink that much water may as well make use of it. There are lots of smooth proteins. Some of the protein shake tubs are for bulking as well. You might be better with one of those to keep a bit of weight on. I'm no expert and don't pretend to be I'm only 12 weeks post RNY. In the last three months I've had six procedures. The last one was kidney stones requiring 3 surgeries. The surgeries and pain meds put the bowel to sleep so that required bombing with extra laxatives and a fleet enema then ongoing double dose of movicol daily. There are a lot of struggles people don't tell you about. I agree it's not all rosy! But back to the protein I would definitely go liquid and soft and maybe have a scan to make sure there's no stricture Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Im 12 weeks out RNY and gave away some tins of spice tuna that I was scared to try but last night I had to make some vegetarian dishes for friends who love spice. I made some very spicy things like Lebanese lentil salad and harissa falafel. I tested both and omg they were hot but no problem on the stomach just my tongue lol Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

Pain Upon Eating - Constant since 2012 Surgery
GwennyPenny replied to jggauthier65's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
How long ago did you see them? What kind of tests did they run? I have had 3 CT scans and 2 gastroscopies for various issues and that seems to get to the root of the problems quickly. There are a lot of people who suffer from varying degrees of pain but I wonder if they get it checked or just live with it. My last bout was kidney stones and a few weeks later high constipation caused by the surgery for the stones and pain meds. So many things are possible. Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I have been treated for depression for several years now and there are times when you really feel dreadful. After the surgery we put up the meds for a few weeks. The surgeon said its quite common after surgery to have a spike in depression due to hormones and body trauma. I am 3 months out now and I have had a few bad days due to some complications more than anything. I'm OK now seeing a psychologist as part of my plan and reduced meds back now. Even though you probably feel like crap it will pass and is treatable. As the weight comes off there will be more positives to celebrate! Take care x Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

Not an easy journey
GwennyPenny replied to Excitedforthesleeve's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I hope you feel better soon. I've had a few bumps in the road kidney stones and chronic constipation. Only been three months and had six procedures. Hopefully that's it now! Feel better x Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I was told nothing with bubbles but I had coffee right from the start. I had it in hospital! Not as much as before because caffeine can dehydrate and getting enough fluid is hard enough Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

My dietitian said that a great result is to lose around 30% of your excess body weight in the first three months. So subtract your goal weight from your highest weight and work out 30% of that figure. However that's the bench mark for a fantastic result there will be a lot of variations of that some higher some lower and as long as you are losing its a good thing [emoji3] Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

My first goal accomplished!!!!
GwennyPenny replied to Lifechanger2137's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's so awesome my highest weight was in the 400s but I lost some myself before the pre-op diet. It's a great feeling to reach these milestones along the way. For me it was bying underwear from a regular shop still plus size but I used to have to order online. Celebrate every step you deserve it! Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I went while in the hospital then when I came home. Nothing for 7 days. I didn't feel like there was anything their either but then all of a sudden my actual stomach hurt and I felt nauseous. I went to the surgeon and he ordered a CT just in case and I was blocked up but it was further in and just wasn't able to move. i had a full enema to move it. Since then I've had to take Movicol and Actilax softener to make sure it keeps going. At this stage you could take a stool softener and see if it comes through. If you are eating it will be there. They told me prune juice and benefibre too Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

I just have a set that measured really high weight. Now that I have lost 100lb I don't need such heavy duty and I'm thinking about new ones too. I can't work out how they measure all that stuff like water weight and bone density it's amazing really Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

Diabetics (cure or reduce?)
GwennyPenny replied to Pat Pac's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sure does Blackcatmatt. Not sure which country you are in so measurements might be different. My 3 months blood test was edging up to 9.5-10 Now I still take it every day just once to check and it's consistently around 4-5 and my cholesterol has dropped to 3.5 as well. Blood pressure meds have been reduced twice so it's looking good. I hope you have lots of success with your surgery too. Good luck Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Diabetics (cure or reduce?)
GwennyPenny replied to Pat Pac's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was being treated with Janumet and was getting close to needing insulin. I had to stop the meds the day before surgery. I had the bypass on Aug 10th and never went back on them. My blood sugar has been under control for 11 weeks. I thought it might change once I was back on solid food but it's still in remission which is what the surgeon called it. How do you celebrate without food?
GwennyPenny replied to _Mini_Me_'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My husband and I had the same issue for out 25th wedding anniversary this year. Everything seemed to revolve around food. We decided that we would make a date and go and see one of our favourite artists who is playing at a venue we can all go to. If others want to eat they can but we will be in where the music is. It's a bit of a waste of money for me to eat out. I'm only 11 weeks post bypass so I can't eat much and I'm still trying out what works for me. If it has to be food I would pick tapas or dim sum or something you can just have small things. Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app -
So sorry to hear that you lost you husband. It's awesome that you have let yourself be romantic again. I wish you both all the very best. Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

My dietitian is still writing my plan up with volume being the main measure. Protein first then veges or fruit then starch in 1/2 cup volumes. I wasn't sure about introducing bread and rice bit looking back to previous diets if I virtually cut out a whole food group I could only sustain that for a short while because it's not easy. When the time came and it always did to fall off the wagon I would reintroduce those things and more in a big way and the regain was rapid. This time I am following the program and even though by default it is higher protein lower carb they are not gone altogether so I don't crave them. I just limit them to small amounts. Someone mentioned beans. I had tinned baked beans about week five but I have found I can only eat them cold out of the fridge [emoji54] Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app

One Month Out- Eating A LOT
GwennyPenny replied to JanetNBama's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 11 weeks out. I only get head hunger late at night on when I'm bored which is the same as before surgery. They were my worst snacking/grazing/mindless eating times. Usually now I have diet Jelly or baby cucumbers and 20gms hummus. Protein will fill you quicker and we should always eat it first. Sent from my CPH1607 using BariatricPal mobile app
