    Help!

Hello  I find it really interesting to hear other peoples concerns and see how we all worry about such different things! I am pre band I hope to have mine fitted next month. I think you are right to have concerns I mean it is a life changing thing we are all signing up for here. I had surgery recently in my mouth although it was painful I bounced right back and was up and about the same day and raring to go home! Although surgery is never fun it did take away all my surgery fears for having the lap band done. There will be an anaesthetist monitoring you all through out the surgery and I have heard it is very rare people wake up whilst under the aesthetic. Complications may arise but you will have medical care on hand and from reading this excellent forum the complications seem to be very few and far between! Hope that was of some help! KiKi XX

Did you have weight problems as a child?

I was underweight until I hit about 9, ironically I did not even like food that much and there was always a struggle to make me eat. My parents got divorced when I hit 9ish and I was sent of to boarding school. I gained weight steadily then, food turned into my new best friend as I was terribly lost and lonely. I got steadily bigger until I hit about 12 where I was sent to live with an aunt who refused to cook for me and therefore was only eating the one meal I got for free at school. I lost a fair amount of weight then went to live with my Dad who let me eat whatever I wanted as long as I left him alone. I steadily gained again despite being quite an active teenager. When I hit 19 I found a private diet clinic who would prescribe slimming pills which were amphetamine based and became addicted to them. Since quitting those I have steadily gained until today I weigh aprox 280lbs.
  5. I have told everyone even people I don't know well. I used to be embarassed by the idea of the operation, but I used telling people as a way to push my comfort zone. I am due to have my band fitted in May and it took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I needed it. I am happy everone knows it means I have nothing to hide or I don't have to worry about someone dropping me in it. Your friend is being narrow minded, surgery is never an easy option! You are taking a positive step to enhance your life, your decision will be right for you which ever way you play it! Good Luck XX

    Where does it go?

Not all of the CO2 introduced into the abdominal cavity is removed through the incisions during surgery. Gas tends to rise, and when a pocket of CO2 rises in the abdomen, it pushes against the diaphragm (the muscle that separates the abdominal from the thoracic cavities and facilitates breathing), and can exert pressure on the phrenic nerve. This produces a sensation of pain that may extend to the patient's shoulders. For an appendectomy, the right shoulder can be particularly painful. In some cases this can also cause considerable pain when breathing. In all cases, however, the pain is transient, as the body tissues will absorb the CO2 and eliminate it through respiration. I copied this from wikipedia for you! UK Local Lap-Band Support

Hi Jane :purplebananna: I was really impressed with Chichester, I think I saw Guy too! The nurse was excellent too. They have really good facilities and the hospital was very modern and clean. They showed me the band they were going to fit when I went in December. They had specialist facilities for larger people and I think they said after the surgery you go on a ward that only has people that have had obesity related surgery. Oh and the 5 months flew by! K XX
  8. Hi all of you  I have not had my band fitted it should be in May. I just have a couple of questions for the more experienced bandsters. 1. Would it possibly disturb my band is I substained some impact to the band area??? 2. Does any one ever feel the tube from the port to the band move about? Sorry had to ask curiosity was killing me!!! Well I am pretty sure its a "post code lottery" I went to my doctor and asked him to refer me, originally I was due to have the surgery at Royal Sussex in Brighton and was offered a rather invasive surgery called a "Vertical Gastric Band" which involves stomach staples and a band that is actually part of your stomach and not adjustable. But because I had no other options I agreed. Then turns out the stopped offering this type of surgery at Brighton (just when I was due to have it done!). I was gutted about this at the time but turned out in my favour as I was then given a choice of 3 hospitals and picked St Richards, Its been a long slog mind about 3 years all in.

    UK Local Lap-Band Support

Hello All, I live in Brighton and am hoping to get my band fitted in May! :crying: I am really lucky to be getting mine on the NHS, I am having it done @ St Richards in Chichester. They have a specialist unit, I had my consultation in Dec the waiting list is 5 months. The facilities were excellent and I don't think even had I paid to go privately the hospital or staff could be any better! I am just waiting for my appointment letter to come through. I have told all my friends and family what I am planning to do. My friends have been excellent and a great support but I don't ever think they will ever really understand as none of them have ever really had a weight problem but bless them they are trying really hard! My parents are a bit apprehensive but on the whole not giving me a hard time. I feel really lucky to have been given this opportunity and that I have my friends and family to support me! And also now I have found this forum I can chat to other people who have been there and done that! WICKED!
  15. Hello :crying:, I am due to be banded May (with a bit of luck!). I am beyond excited! KW XX
