Dumping. malabsorption. after bypass surgery
Doo Lally posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi, thanks for taking a look at my post. I've been doing a lot of research on my own and I still have questions. Would you be willing to share about your experience with malabsorption. have you had weakness or fatigue from having to take pills rather than getting nutrients from food? did your general health remain good? Was there any problems continuing any prescription meds? Any dental problems from lack of suficient vitamins? I have read about dumping syndrome, it sounds awful, and I wonder is there anyone who has not experienced it? -
Dumping. malabsorption. after bypass surgery

Oh, I hope my diabetes goes into remission as well. I started a pre-op liver weight loss diet to prepare for surgery in late Aug., and my next blood sugar A1c was at 5.3. My dr. said it was too low, but I was happy. It had been staying around 6.5 for years. Congratulations on your successes! -
I'm confused and I hope someone can help me out. I have read many times that Bypass surgery does not cause GERD and if you have it, the surgery will get rid of it. I have also read Possible Complications/Risks of the Gastric Bypass. in Bariatric Pal and it states: Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, with severe heartburn as a complications/risk. I do not have any probems of this nature and really don't want to develop it due to surgery. Can anyone help me understand which statement is correct?

GERD after bypass surgery

Thanks for the information. I have used NCBI resource before with success. Since I do not have any reflux problems at all now, I am hopeful that none will appear after my surgery. -

After reading your message, there is no way I could be hesitant for my surgery. I have been on insulin for Type 2 diabetes since 2006 so I hope it will go away, too. The surgeon's nurse that I see each month says that it will. It's a few day more since you left the hospital for your kidney stones and I bet you are doing even better now! Oh my, Congratulations are in order for your 90# weight loss, in such a short time! Thanks for sharing with me. -
GERD after bypass surgery

Thank you James. I'm glad your issue with GERD was resolved. I've never had that problem and hope I don't. I'm 3 months out from my proposed Feb. surgery and finding so much information in conflicted depending upon where you look. -

Thank you very much for your response. It was very helpful. I have been told by my dietician that I will not experience dumping if I follow the recommended foods. So I hope that is correct. -
I read your article and can only say thank you! So very comprehensive, well written and easy to read.

Can't decide between Sleeve and By-Pass
Doo Lally posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi, Would anyone be willing to share how you made your final decision on which procedure to choose? I simply can't decide as there are pros and cons to both the Sleeve and By-pass. I'm brand new here and look forward to getting to know other members. I know my surgery is in February, but just starting out so no date set. Thanks for any help you might be able to give. -

I won't meet my surgeon for several months yet. My apologies, I wasn't clear in my request. I see pros and cons for bypass and sleeve and just having a tough time deciding, and wondering what deciding factors others used. For instance, I don't want to deal with malabsorption or possible dumping, but bypass is known to have greater weight loss. I guess my question sounds kind of goofy. lol Thank you for taking the time to respond and my best to you in the challenges you are facing. -

I shared the info on myself that I thought was most pertinent, I don't have a surgery date set, won't even meet the surgeon for months yet. I tried to go back and edit in my weight etc., but find it a challenge to do so. I was not aware that I had to provide certain info to post. I'm glad your choice worked out for you so well. -

Your response is appreciated. I have done a great deal of research on this in the past month. I was just looking for the opportunity to actually get some feedback other than my own. Yes, there is a lot to consider. -
Can't decide between Sleeve and By-Pass

Thank you for your concise yet informative message. I don't get to consult with the surgeon until closer to my tentative surgery date of Feb, 2018, but am set up for my 2nd appointment with his nurse. She recommended bypass for the simple reason that my diabetes will disappear after surgery. That seemed weak reasoning to me. -

Malabsorption and dumping are 2 things I really don't want to deal with. But, I look at greater weight loss with the bypass. I do not meet my surgeon until next year, and am expected to complete pre-op requirements before that. I anticipate my surgery to happen in Feb. of 2018. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me. -

Thank you for your thoughtful answer. My list of pros and cons for either procedure is daunting. I've only just been accepted for surgery sometime in February.
