Dr. Aaron Hoffman - Lap Band done in Buffalo, NY (Dr. Hoffman)
lindatatu replied to loraine's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Judy, I would think my weight loss is sufficient but my intake is food is more than it should be. The NP at the meeting (Kim) said if I am able to eat a whole bag of popcorn I need a fill. Whatever happens, happens. After surgery I had pain in my left side for about two weeks. Last night afer horribly overeating I had that same pain. I can't wait to ask about it. My port is right at my waistband and some pants rub against it so bad. When I showed Kim she pointed out there is very little area between my bra line and waist so there wasn't much choice. She is correct. -

Hey Val, Say congratulations to Donna for me. You hit the nail on the head. I was going to bring it up today. Next week, the Saturday after Thanksgiving I am certain the mall will be full of shoppers even at 8:30. We will discuss it today while walking. Any suggestions? -

I've unfortunatley have "tested" my band a few times eating normal food and have become uncormfortably full. I have been eating with my mind instead of stopping when I'm full. Has anyone else had this issue. Please help. I guess old habits are hard to break Buckets in the beginning we all have tested our band, or at least until we get stuck! I am eating way more than I should be able to but don't feel it in my chest, just in my abdomen, like you said uncomfortably full. Hopefully I will get a fill on Tuesday when I go for my 6 week check up. -

Hi everyone - we decided to walk in Galleria Mall on Saturday morning. We will meet at 8:30 am at the upper mall entrance by Macys. Hope to see new people who kept using the cold as an excuse! -

Hi everyone, I am looking forward to seeing everyone at tomorrow nights meeting. Jason way to go with the weight loss! Ladies - it is a scientific fact that men lose faster than women so don't get discouraged! Also remember that everyone reacts differently. I haven't been stuck yet and I have eaten way more at times than I think I should have been able to and today, while I am still suppossedly on soft I had a ribeye. No problems. Maybe I haven't recogonized my full sensation yet. I don't know. My next appointment is the 25th. I pray we will all be strong over the next month and celebrate friends, family and the season and not the food. -

Well walkers, it seems we might get some more people if we move inside. In light of last weeks breakin perhaps it is not a bad move. I know my husband was nervous about my parking in the park again. Anyone have any feelings on this? -

Buckets: do you want to go to the meeting together? I live on Seneca Street in SB. I would be interested in walking at Galleria during the week. The meeting starts at 6pm and is in a room off the lobby past the gift shop at BGH. -

jlalor, welcome and congratulations. Yes it is normal to be all over the place emotionally. I am only a month out and am upset about how much I can eat! Don't worry. Everyone kept telling me I would be able to eat anything and they are right. I am eating things I never dreamed I would ever have again and remember I am only 4 weeks post op. First two weeks are the hardest. -

No copay is needed. Just bring a pencil and paper and your support person. It is very informative. Good luck. -

Hi everyone, I too have had trouble with this site and haven't been on for a while. Here are my comments to different questions. Walking- I looked into Walden Galleria for when weather gets bad and you just go. They don't have a program, course or mileage but I can measure with my pedometer. I do 9,000 steps around the park. Debbie - I am glad you are on your way. I have been thinking about you. Bloom - when I first read your post about going for a fill I thought that your weight loss is right on target so I didn't think you would get one. Great job! I am using you for a guide on whether I will get one on the 25th. I personally think I can eat more than I should and could use some restriction but am probably losing weight on target also. Band - the meetings are always the third Wednesday of the month at 6pm. I am going. This month they are going to talk about holiday eating. There is no December meeting. Daniellabee - I think the comfortable clothes are things you can move in and not a dress, ie: elastic waist band pants. You do walk on a treadmill and they test your upper and lower body strength. I don't think you will sweat to much. Shar - chill out! You have enough supplies for next week!! Now my take - I am doing okay. I had two snacks where I overdid it but did not feel it in my band just upset my stomach (lower abdomen). I think I eat too fast but I use a toddler fork and spoon so I know I am not taking to large of a bite. If I am alone I always do something else while eating because it slows me down. I am intelligent enough to know I have to chew. I am eating my breakfast right now while on line. This is the slowest I have eaten yet. Which brings me to my biggest complaint. I don't like my food to get cold. Anyone have any suggetions on how to keep it warm for 20-30 minutes? I haven't weighed myself recently but people are commenting on how good I look and my clothes (and underwear!!!!!) are way to big. I know I would do better if I exercised more. Luckily I have an active job. Protein - some say not to use it but I disagree. How can we get 40-60 gms in a day without supplements? I stopped for a while for no particular reason and yesterday was weak and shaky and ill. I checked my blood sugar but it was fine (no diabetes medicine since surgery) and later in the day I got an email stating the effects of not getting enough protein - I had a glass of milk with chocolate protein powder and felt better almost immediately! I am 3 weeks and 4 days post op and I can eat chili with cooked celery and don't go overboard chewing. Again I don't know if that means I am not as tight or just lucky. I had the chili made before surgery. What used to be a serving is now three! Even though I am on soft I feel like I eat normal. The only thing I can't wait for is salad! I really want a salad! So thats my 10 cents worth - this is to long for just 2 cents LOL. Nice to be back on line. -

i just had surgery with IH. Dr. H says he has a good repore with them. I believe you have to have a BMI of 40 or 35 with co-morbiditys. I am sure if the 5% wight loss requirement is theirs or the WLS center. -

Judy, I think I lost 8 lbs on phase 1 and then 7.5 since surgery. I try and weigh myself on Sundays only. I was running late this morning and ate a hard boiled egg, standing up, over the sink, too fast - OMG. It wasn't a full fledged stuck or slime but I was spitting and had pain. Good lesson. -

Buckets, I get so frustrated with the WLS. I wanted the post op diet and they told me it was in my binder and it wasn't. You can just ask in the store for Whey protein. I did go through periods of real regret right before surgery and in the first 10 days after but now that I have had to give away all of my pants cause they are too big I am happier. LOL Seriously I do still wonder if I can do this. After dinner is when I have been faltering and wanting to get into old habits. It takes a lot of work and committment but I am sure it will become second nature soon. Adjusting to the smaller portions is hard also but they really do fill you up. -

Daniellabee, DO NOT get any tests until requested. But keep copies of all tests you do have done or any paperwork you submit. You may find the SB book at one of those Books a Million or book stores in vacant warehouses. I am very lucky in finding kitchen items and books at thrift shops. -

Oops I forgot about the protein. I used a designer whey protein bought at Vitamin Shop or World. I used the vanilla mostly but chocolate was nice for something similar to chocolate milk for a snack. I used one scoop of the vanilla in a cup of coffee and liked it. I also bought protein bullets. They are liquid and 42 grams. I like orange but they come in other flavors. I mix half in with a bottle of ice tea in the afternoon and the other half in the evening. I getting more than enough protein. Just make sure whatever you buy to get low carb and low sugar and high protein. Some powder is for body builders so you want protein powder for wls. You white binder should have something about protein supplements in it under nutrition. Do not buy a lot of the first week. I did and didn't need anything as I wasn't hungry for two weeks. I only drank the shakes and liquid cause I had to. -

Buckets 62, I am two weeks post op so I have just been to where you are going. I will try to answer some of your questions. As far as posting goes, what you are doing is fine but there is also a New Reply button at the bottom of the page. "If you don't eat slowly and chew all foods thourghly the band will make you misrable. A bite that is too large or not adequately chewed will feel like it is hung up. The trapped food causes the eshophagus to contract vigourously in an attempt to push the bite through the narrow opening created by the band. This spastic contraction is very uncomfortable and is usually felt in the chest. The pain radiates into the back or up into the neck. It is usually accompanied by the production of a large amount of foamy mucus which quickly builds up in the esphagus above the blockage. Salavation can also increase in the mouth as the body attempts to provide lubrication. Some band patients call this "sliming." Eventually the mucus along with some or all of the recently swallowed food, will come back up. This is not really vomiting and doesn't contain much, if any digestive acid. It is more of a spontaneous regurgitaion. Some patiens refer to this spitting up as a "productive burp." From WLS with the AGB by Robert Sewell. A blender is nice for protein shakes but I found the smaller magic bullet to be more convenient. I bought a knock off at Big Lots (thanks to someone heres suggestion) for only $22. For the first week you only drink shakes and then the second week is puree and that is where the bullet came in handy. Week 3-6 is soft but that is pretty much anything easy to chew, including meats and fruit. I had turkey chili last night on my first day of soft. Please stop smoking. I can't believe you are being banded while it is still an issue. You are going to all this work to get healthy, don't blow it with smoking. Use the money you save by not smoking to buy yourself something special. You deserve it. Good Luck! -

Bloom I am on soft till my six week checkup. one week of puree and then 4 weeks of soft. I am ready for different eating. I go to more "real" foods tomorrow. To whoever asked about the seminar, I was at BGH and I heard that they invited to many to the next seminar and were calling some to ask them to reschedule. I wouldn't want to be on either end of that phone call! I have having a very bad day and food is my comfort. If I wasn't so darn scared of the pain and consequences I would be eating something forbidden. As is I ate a little more than I should. If this was my old life I would be overeating or at least eating something non healthy for dinner. So I guess thank you band. Also I hate not being able to drink after I eat. You guys must be tired of hearing me complain! Really bad timing with getting the band and a crisis at home. Sigh. I wish I was one of those people who couldn't eat when upset or stressed. I would be so skinny! LOL -

Judy, what kind of fiber? The metamucil turns to jelly in your glass if you don't drink it right away so I understand when they said not yet on that. I also have ground flaxseed which I guess I could add to my oatmeal and maybe cottage cheese. I am amazed I am not hungry yet.
